Illinois State Police say 2008 may be least deadly year on Illinois roadways in recent history. Master Sergeant Brian Ley says that as of Friday, only 681 Traffic fatalities had occurred this year, 172 fewer than at the same time in 2007. And 2007 had only 1,248 Traffic Deaths -- the lowest number since 1924, when there were far fewer cars on the road. Ley says increased seat belt usage could account for some of the decline. A recent survey by the Illinois Department of Transportation said 90.1 percent of drivers and front seat passengers now wear them, compared to about 76 percent in 2003. But a recent study by a University of Michigan professor suggests that high gas prices may also be helping with the decline in fatalities. More on Gas Prices ... Source: www.freep.com --- 11 days ago

The statistics for motor vehicle accident fatalities in California were recently released and showed a small drop in fatalities. Unfortunately there were still nearly 4000 Deaths on California Highways last year. Although Traffic Deaths hit a record low in 2007, motorcycle accidents and Deaths increased nearly 25%. This is consistent with what we are seeing here in Sacramento County as well surrounding counties. Not only are we representing more families who have lost loved ones in motorcycle accidents, we are also seeing more motorcycle accidents and severe injuries from motorcycle accidents. This could be attributed to a number of factors including the fact that more people are driving motorcycles because of high gas prices but unfortunately appear to be driving without proper training. If you are under 21, you must complete mandatory training to obtain your drivers license. If you are over 21, there is no mandatory training. However we urge everyone who is considering purchasing a motorcycle to obtain the proper training --even if you think you know how to ride. There are number of training facilities in the Sacramento area . A nice website put out by the California DMV regarding motorcycle safety and training includes a section to find a rider course near you. Originally posted at InjuryBoard by John Demas ...

August was the deadliest month this year on Wisconsin roads. Last month, 83 people died as the result of 74 Traffic crashes with four of those Deaths occurring on Aug. 30 and 31 during the Labor Day weekend, according to preliminary statistics from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Each month since October 2007, fatality totals were lower than the same month in the previous year. But Traffic fatalities in August were 17 more than in August 2007 when 66 people died in 61 crashes and 11 more than the five-year average of 72 Deaths in 63 crashes for the month of August. The safest month of August in terms of Traffic Deaths occurred in 1960 with 64 fatalities, and the deadliest month was August 1969 with 154 fatalities-the worst month in Wisconsin history. Even with a spike in August, Traffic Deaths so far this year are about 20 percent lower than last year. As of Aug. 31, 400 people have died in 369 Wisconsin Traffic crashes during 2008, including 54 motorcycle drivers, seven motorcycle passengers, 31 pedestrians and seven bicyclists. Traffic Deaths through August were 88 fewer than during the same period in 2007 and 108 fewer than the five-year average. We cant pinpoint an exact reason for the increase in Traffic fatalities in August, said Dennis Hughes, chief of safety programs for the Wisconsin State Patrol Bureau of Transportation Safety. ...
