"Early in the night we play old ragtime, which I like a lot and I think Eben likes too." Photo: Melissa Hom When John Paul Jones left his job waiting tables at wd~50 to create playlists for restaurants, hotels, and casinos, his co-workers Sam Mason and Eben Freeman didn't forget him. In between spinning at Macri Park in Williamsburg on Wednesdays and the occasional Friday, JPJ picks up a few shifts at Tailor . If you like what you hear on the stereo, that's his doing, too. We asked him about tasting curious dishes for fall, Mason's new soda-fountain project , and who comes in to order plain steak. How would you describe your music program at the restaurant? Rooted in rock and roll. Sam's pretty big into music, and a big country fan. Indie rock, a big mix. I try to put on a lot of his favorites: Waylon Jennings and Townes Van Zandt. Early in the night we play old ragtime, which I like a lot and I think Eben likes too. Tailor's redoing the menu for fall. What have you been sampling? They're always working on new stuff in there, but it might just be an idea that's a part of a dish. [Mason]'s been working on huitlachoche corn dogs for the bar menu. They did a dinner for Kellogg's where they used cereal throughout the meal. Have you tried any unique floats from Mason's new soda-fountain project? Not his floats, but a lot of his ice cream. He's talked about [the soda fountain] since the beginning of the summer, but he was also talking ...

Hailing from the Wisconsin Northwoods, JJ Schultz captures the lonesome middle-America landscape with the wry clarity of Nebraska era Springsteen. Schultz's wavering vibrato captures the snap shots of everyday people surviving the life of rural America. The dusty barrooms, the front porch steps and farmer's fields are images delivered with a subtle passion that's balanced between sparse guitar picking and a poignant vocal delivery that is as distinctive as Jay Farrar and Townes Van Zandt. ...

Once upon a time, Rodney Crowell was a bona fide hit machine. With "Stars on the Water," "'Til I Gain Control Again," "Ain't Livin' Long Like This," "She's Crazy for Leaving" and "It's Such a Small World," Crowell's pen couldn't miss. Townes Van Zandt used to taunt him, but truth is Crowell has had ... ...

Rodney Crowell From Gypsy punk to singer/songwriter to world musician to Talking Head, the AT&T Stage on Friday, September 26th at this year’s Austin City Limits will host a wide range of talent. The music begins later in the morning, but the final act, Manu Chao, closes out the evening as the night’s final band at 8:30 p.m. As a stage reserved for some of the bigger acts, you’ve most likely heard these guys, or at least heard of them. If neither, well then maybe you should bring a blanket and a smile and plant yourself up front for the duration for some aural edification. Houston native Rodney Crowell starts things off with a treasure trove of songs dating back to the '80s that run between country, folk and rock. He struck up friendships with Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt early on and was married to Rosanne Cash. Then, in the late '80s with his album Diamonds and Dirt he experienced a boom in popularity with a few songs that became #1 hits on the US country charts, such as “It’s Such a Small World” (a duet with Cash) and “I Couldn’t Leave You If I Tried”. He also brought his twang and song to bear in Emmylou Harris ’ Hot Band for a few years. Touring for his debut solo album, Seeing Things , just out this July, Jakob Dylan along with his touring band, The Gold Mountain Rebels , are making landfall at ACL. He, like many these days, really hit the festival circuit this year with performances at Bonnaroo, Bumbershoot, Rothbury and ...

This poster has always been crazy for Texas singer/songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Alejandro Escovedo, and of course...Steve Earle. Friday night, lucky BaristavEarlians had a chance to see Earle and his wife, the golden-voiced singer/songwriter Allison Moorer, perform at the always great Outpost in the Burbs. ...

It’s hard to type the JJ Schultz Band living in Chicago and not think JJ Fish (fast food fish parlour). Anyway just a quick post for Sunday morning. Folk-country no doubt inspired by equal parts Townes Van Zandt and Merle Hagard. JJ Schultz voice, guitar playing and songs make for an impressive package from an […] ...

Here's a video clip posted by a concertgoer who had a balcony seat at Wednesday night's Robert Plant/Alison Krauss/T Bone Burnett concert at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis. Kenny Williamson For a slideshow of the concert, click here . The song: "Nothin'," by Townes Van Zandt. As I recall, Plant introduced the tune by saying something along the lines of, "It's an American song -- all the good ones are." Vantage point's nothing to write home about, but the sound is pretty solid and the performance was stellar. Kudos to "WestieMumX3," a.k.a. "Led Zep Gurl," who shot it. More discussion of the STL show can be found on this Led Zep forum thread . I reviewed the show on A to Z here . RFT slideshow by Kenny Williamson can be viewed here . "I always say that Nick was born with a skin too few," said actress Gabrielle Drake about her brother, singer and songwriter Nick Drake, who overdosed in 1974 at the age of 26 in his parent's home in Tanworth- in- Arden. The film paints a portrait, through interviews with family and friends, of a brilliant but self destructive figure who passed away believing that he was a failure. If only he knew the resurgence that his work has received in these past 10 years or so and how many people he has influenced and continues to inspire to this day. An interesting note is that the bedroom that they use in the film is accurate, thanks to Gabrielle Drake, and has all of Nick's original belongings in it. If you missed the previous films in our Movie Lounge series, be sure to check out Festival Express , Celebration at Big Sur and Townes Van Zandt's Be Here To Love Me . For the lastest edition of our Twang Series, we would like to pay homage to the fine men that gave us our namesake ("When You Awake" was a tune that appeared on their self titled second album), The Band. Gene Clark, My Morning Jacket, Steve Young, Aretha Franklin featuring Duane Allman and more ably cover both the songs that they co-wrote with Bob Dylan during the Basement Tape sessions as well as tunes from their solo career after. The one thing that this tape is missing that I couldn't find for the life of me is a version of the Beatles doing "To Kingdom Come" on the bootleg album The Get Back Journals . Anyone have access to that? I would be eternally grateful! If you missed the last entries in our Twang series, be sure to check out the tapes from Tim Hardin and Townes Van Zandt . The Band Goes Twang: A When You Awake Mixtape 1. Steve Young- This Wheel's On Fire (Rick Danko, Bob Dylan) 2. Gene Clark- Tear's Of Rage (Richard Manuel, Bob Dylan) 3. Aretha Franklin and Duane Allman- The Weight (Robbie Robertson) 4. Richie Havens- The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (Robbie Robertson) 5. The Byrds- Nothing Was Delivered (Bob Dylan, The Band) 6. Bobby Charles- Small Town Talk (Rick Danko, Bobby Charles) 7. Doris- Whispering Pines (Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson) 8. My Morning Jacket- It Makes No Difference (Robbie Robertson) 9. Faith Willin’ is that rarest of creatures in the roots music scene these days: a family trio.
