Even the pitcher with the best ERA in baseball has had trouble helping the Oakland Athletics, whose anemic offense has them on the verge of their first double-digit losing streak in more than 14 years. Justin Duchscherer will seek to prevent that while earning his first victory in nearly a month on Thursday at Rogers Centre, where the Toronto Blue Jays go for their first-ever four-game sweep of the free-falling A's. ... Gio Gonzalez shook off a rude welcome to the major leagues and showed why he's considered Oakland's top pitching prospect. It still wasn't enough to give the slumping Athletics a win. Rod Barajas hit a three-run homer, Shaun Marcum pitched seven strong innings and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Oakland 5-1 Wednesday night to extend the Athletics' season-long losing streak to nine games. Oakland has been outscored 47-17 during the skid, managing no more than three runs in each of the losses. ... Source: msn.foxsports.com --- 6 hours ago

Shaun Marcum had a no-hitter through five innings and Rod Barajas hit a three-run home run, as the Toronto Blue Jays topped the struggling Oakland Athletics, 5-1, in the third contest of a four- game set. Marcum (6-5) gave up one run on just three hits over seven innings, while fanning seven and walking two en route to the win. Adam Lind had two of the four hits for Toronto, which has won three straight and four of five. Gio Gonzalez (0-1), whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Sacramento earlier Wednesday, made his major league debut for the A's. But he took the loss as he gave up four runs on four hits through six-plus innings of work. Bobby Crosby homered for Oakland, which has dropped a season-high nine straight contests. "First inning, first pitch I was just hoping it would be a strike," Gonzalez said. "After that, just tried to stay down in the strike zone." The Blue Jays got on the board, 3-0, in the first inning. Alex Rios clubbed a two-out double, Lyle Overbay drew a walk and Barajas cleared the table with a long three-run homer to left field. ... Source: www.kansas.com --- 9 hours ago
Rays 8, Indians 4 -- Evan Longoria, Dioner Navarro and Cliff Floyd homered to help the Rays get the win. Longoria's two-run drive in Tampa Bay's four-run seventh was his 22nd of the season, setting a team record for a rookie. Longoria hit two long drives that landed in foul territory then took a pitch before connecting against Rafael Betancourt. Blue Jays 4, Athletics 3 -- Kevin Mench singled in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning and the Blue Jays extended the Athletics' season-long losing streak to eight games. Toronto trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth against Oakland closer Huston Street. Alex Rios led off with a single and scored one out later when Rod Barajas doubled over the head of left fielder Ryan Sweeney. His first start wasn't a total success but he did give us 5.1 and only gave up 3 runs in a loss. Lefty Greg Smith Starts for the A's, we have troubles with lefties, but since the break he has been 0-3 in 3 starts with an 8.10 ERA. He had a win against us back in May, pitching 6.2 scoreless. Joe Inglett isn't in the lineup today, but then we are facing a lefty and he hasn't played much against them. Rolen is back at third after sitting two days. Maybe he can hit another homer, like in his last start. Lind is batting 6th tonight so looks like Cito has decided he is a middle of the order hitter. Yay. And with the lefty we don't have to watch Wilk struggle at the plate. Yankees and Red Sox each ... Source: www.bluebirdbanter.com --- 7 hours ago

We have the same lineup that was soooo effective against Greg Smith yesterday. Today's lefty is Gio Gonzalez who was called up from Triple A to make the start. Gio was 8-7 with a 4.24 ERA there. He is a hard thrower but has had trouble finding the strike zone. Maybe we could let him walk a few tonight? Shawn Marcum is going for us. He's had a tough time since coming back from the DL, I think he needs to build up arm strength, he has started each game well but when he tires his pitches has come up and he's given up 5 homeruns in 14.2 innings. Barajas has been hot of lately, it seems he is either very hot or very cold. Gotta hope this hot streak lasts for awhile. Lind has been hot s ... Source: www.athleticsnation.com --- 9 hours ago
Well, for the first time in a really long time, A's fans have something to look forward to in tonight's game; the major league debut of LHP Gio Gonzalez, who will be facing the Blue Jays in his start tonight. Everyone connected to the A's is high on Gonzalez, not so much for his starting numbers (a pedestrian 8-7, 4.24 ERA at Triple-A), but rather for his 128 K's in 123 innings. I hope someone warned him that he needs to give up two runs or fewer in the game to have a chance at a major league win, because, you know, the A's offense. They will be facing Shaun Marcum. I'm excited to see Gio pitch. Well, actually, I'm excited for something new and different in an A's game, and we get it tonight. Let's hope that a new pitcher equals a different outcome for the game. Maybe he'll throw nine.
