Those who spot and report Tornadoes are asked to classify them by their appearance. Weak Tornadoes may look thin and spindle-like, and these are called "rope Tornadoes." The classic V-shaped funnel that comes in contact with the ground is a stovepipe. Violent Tornadoes are called wedges, such as the ones that devastated Oklahoma City in 1999 and Greensburg in 2007. Damage in the aftermath of a tornado, no matter how strong, always appears random and chaotic. One house could be demolished while another across the street goes untouched. Contrary to popular belief, "skipping" Tornadoes do not cause the helter-skelter destruction. Damage surveys and media reports might give a skipping tornado impression but by definition a tornado is a violently rotating column of air "in contact with the ground." When the vortex of air lifts off the ground, it is literally no longer a tornado. Even if the same vortex touches the ground again later, it is technically a separate tornado. ...
