Today I de-camped at dawn to watch the Torch Relay in that-famous-square-whose-named-we-all-know. A couple dozen other journalists and I were herded to a spot facing Mao’s portrait, We waited and waited. And waited. The last time I’d waited that long in that place, that early in the morning, was in 1989 during a brief and ill-fated Beijing Spring. Back then I was waiting for Chinese police to come clear the square of hundreds of youthful protestors who’d hung colorful silk banners off official flagpoles in front of the granite obelisk known as the Monument to the People’s Heroes. (Chinese look down on your political movement if you don’t have flags made of luxuriant silk, and if you don’t know how to brandish them just right so that the fabric floats like butterflies’ wings.) These kids in 1989 – about the same age as the youth in the square this morning -- chanted pro-democracy slogans and strummed folk-songs on guitars. That earlier time I had stayed overnight in the square, surrounded by this moonlit and surreal Chinese Woodstock scene, because the next day Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was due in town for a historic Sino-Soviet summit. I assumed police would come waving their truncheons, and maybe lobbing tear gas, to clear the square of this ragtag assembly of demonstrators before Gorby’s arrival. The International Olympic Committee is considering preventing London from staging the international Torch Relay before the 2012 Games after the Beijing Relay was described as a "disaster." Instead, they are suggesting that future Torch relays be confined to the host nation. Dick Pound, a senior IOC member and former president of the World Anti-Doping Agency, blasted the Chinese organizing committee yesterday during an IOC session for ignoring advice to cancel the international portion of the Torch Relay. After China's violent clampdown on civil unrest in Tibet in March, the Torch sparked anti-Chinese protests around the world. Further more, there were pretty violent scenes when the Torch passed through London and Paris in April. This situation left many governments considering boycotting the 2008 Beijing Games. Pound is not calling for the IOC to ban international relays in the future, which would restrict the 2012 London Games to a tour within the country only. Pound said: "The international leg of the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay was close to a disaster that was beyond the control of the IOC and the organising committee. My commission, which examined the issue, felt that there should not be an international Relay, and my understanding is that the coordination commission was of the same view. According to reports , both the Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Torch relays will be confined within Canada and Great Britain, respectively. The London Olympic Organizing Committee apparently wants to "bring the Torch Relay back to basics" and showcase the Torch within 30 minutes of every British citizen. But the real reasoning is likely to avoid the headaches that marred the Beijing Torch route: Dick Pound, a former IOC vice-president and a representative for Canada, said that the anti-Chinese protests that pursued the Torch through major cities on its global tour had brought the Games “close to disaster”. He added that only goodwill generated after a devastating earthquake hit Sichuan province in May, claiming at least 70,000 lives, averted a boycott. Sure, Vancouver and London are less controversial than Beijing. But maybe they're worried that some bitter Parisians, having been snubbed in their bid for the 2012 games, will try to grab the Torch again. ...
