This episode determines which four chefs go to Puerto Rico -- the site of the finale -- and is it any shocker that this week it really turns into a battle for last between Lisa and Spike? Who will go home -- the whiny, annoying, finger-pointing complainer or the arrogant, obnoxious hat-wearing guy? Hat Boy, aka Spike, starts off well, when the cheftestants get dragged to a butcher's warehouse, where they each have to cut and french seven chops from a monster dry-aged ribeye rack. The grandson of a butcher, Spike cuts a beautiful chop. (Stephanie, meanwhile, makes it look as though the beef is going to wrestle her to the ground). But that's not the end of the challenge. Then the chefs have to bring their mounds of meat back to the Top Chef kitchen and cook a perfectly done medium-rare tomahawk chop for Chicago guest Chef Rick Tramonto. ... TV EDITOR'S NOTE: Perhaps it's only all too appropriate given this week's episode, but today's blog is being prepared by me, your sous-scribe for this week. Regular blogger Jennifer Frey will return as soon as the power to her storm-hit home does. This week's run-up to next week's season finale is not for the squeamish. Not because slaughtered swine abounds in the cramped, shoulder-to-pork-shoulder kitchen, though that's not for the faint of eye, either. No, we mean because Lisa and her Sour Demeanor live on to linger in the Puerto Rican air. To pervert Jimmy Buffett's song: Since Chicago, there's been a change in latitude but no change in attitude. Even Richard flat-out snarks about the constant acid-rain cloud that is whiny Lisa, looming toxic over San Juan. Speaking of Richard the Great, he and Stephanie continue to battle it out, having gone neck-and-neck for weeks like mid-primary Democratic candidates. ... Wow. Okay. Everyone visiting here knows -- so this shouldn't be a SPOILER -- that Steph won, fulfilling pretty much the popular consensus from forever. And that Richard -- who looked to be the favorite early -- "choked," by his own description. Am I the only one who thought that the teaser from last week with Richard just saying what had to be said at judges' table was going to be a repeat of Season 1, when Tiffani got called out for being evil? I seriously believed he was going to trash Lisa. Major kudos to Richard for being gentlemanly to the end and trashing himself instead. And big smile when he talked about having the baby on the way -- given that he finished the earlier kid challenge by saying he wanted to make one. I love Tom Colicchio. His personality is well-suited to the show, his comments are dead-on and he handles all the volatile personalities well.... ...So do you sense a "but" coming? Tom has a charity commitment this week ,so Anthony Bourdain steps in as head judge (oh, and for all you Washingtonians who love his restaurants, Jose Andres is in the standard guest judge spot). And Bourdain brings it. No holding back, totally ready to zing. Very entertaining. It made for quite a spicy alternate judges' table. But first, the Quickfire. Colicchio claimed the judges were deadlocked on dishes prepared by thirteen cheftestants, so he asked Today 's Meredith Viera, Kathy Lee Gifford, Natalie Morales, and Hoda Kotb to help out. The challenge was, of course, to create something you could prepare on Today . The winner would have the chance to make his dish on the morning show. The fifth season of Top Chef has made itself at home in Brooklyn , and is currently in production. That means that there have been Chef sightings in the New York City area, although perhaps the biggest news is how few of them there are, especially in a city like New York. Last week, Eater published a report from someone who saw the chefs at Whole Foods, where they're apparently continuing to shop this season. An actual sign proved it was them: At the Bowery Whole Foods, there was "a sign announcing that anyone entering the store would automatically agree to being filmed for a production by 'Magical Elves,'" Eater says. And Time for Cheese spotted the chefs at Craft, Tom Colicchio's restaurant. When they're not cooking, the "cast has definitely been living for about two weeks now in a terraced duplex penthouse in Williamsburg overlooking McCarren Park," The New York Observer reports , citing "an extremely well-placed source" who says the chefs are "leaving around 8 or 9 in the mornings for a soundstage in Greenpoint and coming straight back in the evenings." Last night, Top Chef fourth season contestant Spike Mendelsohn opened Good Stuff, a Capitol Hill hamburger joint that boasts “handcrafted burgers, handcut fries, and handspun shakes.” Chef Spike is being modest, this food sounds a whole lot better than a measly ‘good.’ We’re dying to try Spike’s Handcut Fries, seasoned with fresh thyme, rosemary, and cracked pepper. Not into meat? Here’s your answer: the Vegetarians Are People Too ‘Shroom Burger, with muenster and chedder stuffed portobello tops, fried with panko crumbs and…did I just hear your stomach growl? Further evidence that Top Chef contestants are staying at one of the fabulous new Williamsburg condos at McCarren Park was obtained this weekend when production assistants were seen loading cameras and equipment into 20 Bayard . A laminated sign on the dashboard of one of their vans read "Magical Elves," which is a production company that often works for Bravo. The fifth season of the popular reality show is being filmed in New York, but Bravo is understandably tight-lipped about details. Nevertheless, contestants were spotted at Whole Foods yesterday and Craft this morning . When asked what they were filming in the thus-uninhabited luxury condo, one crew member said with a smirk, "A mayonnaise commercial. Just a mayonnaise commercial." When pressed to name the brand of mayonnaise, the crew member fell silent and his co-worker blew cigarette smoke in our direction. We felt awkward and left, but will return later to stake out the building. Developing... ...
