Last weekend saw the second iteration of the reborn Belle Isle Grand Prix and we were right there, enjoying the spectacle played out in weather so perfect Roger Penske couldn't have paid for better. Aside from a couple spin outs, Sunday's Indy Racing League run was largely unremarkable until lap 72, when things got very interesting. Helio Castroneves had been leading Mark Wilson and Tony Kanaan for the bulk of the race, but officials ordered Castroneves to yield to Wilson after aggressive blocking across the entire track. Helio gave way and Wilson eventually pulled away, opening up a lead and taking the checkered flag. Normally this would be a non-issue, as Helio was clearly blocking, but that he was issued no warning first, as is customary, has many of his fans rubbed the wrong way — as you can tell from the video. Indeed, on the victory lap, Wilson decided he'd do a victory donut right in front of the Corvette Racing chalet, but humorously stalled it. We missed the stall, but we caught tail end of the resulting drunken tirade from a nameless Castroneves fan as Wilson was pushed to the corner for a start. We have no idea why she was screaming about transvestites and McDonalds — she's probably got a problem with their refusal to discriminate against them, but whatever. In any case, the sentiment was shared as there were strong boos on the awards stand from the crowd in one of the saddest displays of fan assholery we've seen in a lo ...

Ryan Briscoe will start on the pole for Sunday's IndyCar Series season-ending Peak Antifreeze Indy 300 at the Chicagoland Speedway. The No.6 Team Penske driver circled the 1.5-mile oval four times in one minute, 41.4190 seconds (215.818 m.p.h.). The pole victory was Briscoe's third of the season and the fourth of his IndyCar career. "What a way to try to finish up this season," Briscoe said. "It's nice to win a pole on an oval. The car was great right off the track this weekend. We just have to try to keep Dixon behind us." Dixon captured the outside pole after posting a time of 1:41.5435. Danica Patrick (1:41.5456) and Tony Kanaan (1:41.6307) will make up row two. ...

Dan Wheldon , the 2005 Indy Racing League and Indianapolis 500-champion and a St. Petersburg resident, left Chip Ganassi Racing on Tuesday and joined Panther Racing for 2009. He will be replaced by 2007 league champion and Indy-winner Dario Franchitti , who ended his abortive NASCAR career to replace him. Franchitti said he did not know if Wheldon was ousted, and Panther owner John Barnes said only that Wheldon’s representatives had contacted him a few weeks ago.     But Wheldon seemed stung by Ganassi’s attempt in August to replace him with fellow free agent Tony Kanaan. A winner of 15 Indy Car races, Wheldon, 30, missed repeating as champion in 2006 on tie-breakers. Panther, which released Vitor Meira on Tuesday, gave Wheldon his IndyCar start in 2002 and he and barnes remained friends. The team won championships with Sam Hornish Jr. in 2001 and 2002.   Franchitti, meanwhile, continues to plumb career options at age 35, saying “the opportunity that arose was just something I could not pass up.” Franchitti finished 32nd or worse in nine of 10 Sprint Cup races for which he qualified this season. He missed several weeks with a broken bone in his ankle following a Nationwide Series crash and had his Cup program shut down in July, ostensibly because of sponsorship woes. He called returning to IndyCars almost a calendar year after news of his NASCAR moved leaked “ completely surreal.” He said he and Ganassi had discussed racing the N ...

Franck Montagny, #26 XM Radio Acura "One car spun to the right, another spun to the left, I tried to go between the two to avoid contact but a piece of debris hit me. It broke the front suspension and there was nothing for me to do. It is just unfortunate because we had a chance to be there challenging for the LMP2 win. The XM Radio Acura crew did a great job all weekend. They worked hard yesterday to repair the car after the morning incident for qualifying and gave Tony (Kanaan), Marco (Andretti) and me a great car ... ...
