There were few surprises in the 2008 ESPY Awards that took place on Sunday, July 20. While there were some huge surprises, such as the fact that Justin Timberlake was a great host, and that Tiger Woods, since undergoing his surgery, bears an uncanny resembelance to actor Will Ferrell, the awards themselves carried no real major upsets—though there were definitely some tight races. There were also some tight races in the Bleacher Report ESPY Awards, where you, the B/R community voted on each of the ESPY categories after I reported the Nominees and asked for your opinions. Most categories received an overwhelming response, others received few but still meaningful votes. So without further ado, here are the winners of the official ESPY Awards polls and the winners as voted on by the Bleacher Report community (if different from official winner). Hummer Like Nothing Else Award: George Martin Best Track and Field Athlete: Tyson Gay Best Female Tennis Player: Maria Sharapova / Justine Henin Best Male Tennis Player: Roger Federer Best Outdoor Athlete: Army Capt. Scott Smiley Best Jockey: Kent Desormeaux Best Golfer: Tiger Woods (no votes for any other nominee) Best Fighter: Floyd Mayweather Best Driver: Jimmie Johnson / Tony Schumacher Best Bowler: Norm Duke Best Female Action Sports Athlete: Gretchen Bleiler Best Male Action Sports Athlete: Shaun White Best MLS Player: David Beckham Best NHL Player: Sidney Crosby Best NFL Player: Tom ...

The actor's first role earned him a Spirit Award nod among heavyweight competition. There were four familiar names this year among the Nominees for the 2007 Film Independent's Spirit Award for best actor -- Don Cheadle, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Frank Langella and Tony Leung, writes Susan King. But there was one name few filmgoers had heard before: Pedro Castaneda, who was nominated for his work in the leisurely paced Spanish-language drama "August Evening." The stocky, gray-haired Castaneda had never acted, much less made a movie, before "August Evening," for which he and his castmates were honored at last year's Los Angeles Film Festival. The film opens Friday. The 53-year-old native of Laredo, Texas, was working in the computer business in San Antonio when he was spotted by filmmaker Chris Eska. The writer-director, who makes his feature debut with "August Evening," thought the soft-spoken Castaneda had the perfect look for the role of Jaime, an undocumented farmworker toiling on a Texas chicken farm whose life is turned upside down when his beloved wife suddenly dies. Read the rest of Susan King's piece about "August Evening" here and click here for more on film. Looks like "Dancing with the Stars" may be an Emmy wallflower again this year, at least when it comes to winning the Award for choreography. "So You Think You Can Dance" took three of the five slots and "High School Musical 2" took another, leaving Julianne Hough as the sole contender for teaching celebrities how to trip the light fantastic. (See full list of Nominees HERE.) Last year, "Dancing with the Stars" was the lone loser while the high-energy "So You Think You Can Dance" took two of the Emmys for choreography and "Tony Bennett: An American Classic" won the third. And two years ago, despite three nominations, "Dancing with the Stars" was left on the sidelines as "High School Musical" won the only Emmy awarded for choreography. Overall, the boffo ratings of "Dancing" have not translated into much Emmy gold. Two years ago, the show went 2 for 6 with wins for technical direction and costumes. Last year it went 0 for 8 and this year it is also up for eight awards. Perhaps recent winner Kristi Yamaguchi's Olympic gold medal for figure skating can rub off on the show when they start doling out those golden Emmys. Right now "So You Think You Can Dance" is one of the hottest TV shows in America. Just last week "So You Think You Can Dance" won its time slot on Thursday night, drawing nearly 8 million viewers. Such intense interest in the sexy TV show right now can only help to give it an extra kick in Emmy voting. Photo: Fox ...

As last year's champ Jaime Pressly ("My Name Is Earl") did not make the Top 10, the race for funniest featured woman is wide open. Our Emmy gurus Robert "Rob L" Licuria and Chris "Boomer" Beachum agree on three of the five Nominees –- Vanessa Williams ("Ugly Betty") and Jenna Fischer ("The Office"), who both picked up nods last year, as well as newcomer Kristen Chenoweth ("Pushing Daisies"). To fill out the final five, Rob opts for two-time nominee Holland Taylor of "Two and a Half Men" and Tony Award winner Jane Krakowski ("30 Rock"). Boomer believes two-time guest comedy actress winner Jean Smart will score her first comedy series nom for "Samantha Who?" and Amy Poehler will land her first nod after seven seasons on "Saturday Night Live." Our Emmy gurus agree that two-time Nominees Conchata Ferrell ("Two and a Half Men") and Elizabeth Perkins ("Weeds") will finish out of the running as will Judith Light of "Ugly Betty," who picked up a guest nod for that show last year. To find the final five Nominees, Boomer and Rob follow the actual voting process. First, they predict the order of the semifinalists as determined by the popular vote by the TV academy's actors' branch. Here's how Rob thinks the popular vote tallied — 1.) Vanessa Williams 2.) Holland Taylor 3.) Jenna Fischer 4.) Jane Krakowski 5.) Elizabeth Perkins 6.) Conchata Ferrell 7.) Kristin Chenoweth 8.) Judith Light 9.) Jean Smart 10.) Amy Poehler How Boomer ranks the popular ...

While there are some performers, like "Damages" stars Glenn Close and Ted Danson who are old pros when it comes to the Emmys (they picked up nods 11 and 13 respectively today), others are new to the dance. Among them are a host of talent who may be Oscar winners or Nominees but had never competed for an Emmy until today. Two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey picked up his first two Emmy noms for producing and starring in the telefilm "Recount." Among his acting competition are two Oscar Nominees Ralph Fiennes and Paul Giamatti who got their first Emmy nods for two other HBO properties ,"Bernard and Doris" and "John Adams" respectively. Two-time Oscar nominee Catherine Keener is a first time Emmy nominee for her lead role in the telefilm "An American Crime" while Oscar nominee Eileen Atkins received her first Emmy nom for the miniseries "Cranford." (While Atkins bested her co-star Judi Dench in the lead race at the BAFTAs, here she competes in supporting.) And then there are the stage actors who have won or been nominated for the Tony Award who are competing for their first Emmy. (Fiennes, Spacey, and Atkins could be on this list as well). Tony winner Kristen Chenoweth is a first-time nominee for her supporting work on the comedy series "Pushing Daisies." And Tony winner Stephen Dillane earned his first Emmy nod for his supporting turn on "John Adams." Tony nominee Gabriel Byrne competes for his first Emmy as lead actor for the drama ...

Ricky Gervais ("Extras: The Extra Special Series Finale") and Laura Linney ("John Adams") are the only Emmy winners among the 10 performers competing in the lead acting races for miniseries and movies. Linney won both of her previous Emmy nods –- for this category in 2002 ("Wild Iris") and for guesting on the finale of "Frasier" in 2004. In just three years, Gervais earned seven Emmy nominations with two wins — for producing the American version of his hit Brit sitcom "The Office" in 2006 and for acting in the series version of "Extras" last year. With his three nods today (for writing, directing and starring in this "Extras" telefilm) bringing his nomination count up to 10, Ricky Gervais equals the total of the other Nominees (with the exception of Linney). Among his category contenders, double Oscar winner Kevin Spacey ("Recount") as well as Oscar Nominees Ralph Fiennes ("Bernard and Doris") and Paul Giamatti ("John Adams") are Emmy newcomers while Oscar nominee Tom Wilkinson ("Recount") had only a sole Emmy nod before his double nomination today (he picked up a supporting nom for "John Adams" as well.)Among the actresses, Oscar winner Judi Dench ("Cranford") competed once in this category ("The Last of the Blonde Bombshells," 2001) while Oscar winner Susan Sarandon ("Bernard and Doris") had two losing bids as guest actress in a comedy series ("Friends," 2001, and "Malcolm in the Middle," 2002). Filed under: House , Celebrities , TV Squad Awards Attention, TV Squad readers, my friends and fellow television fans, it's time to announce the winner for The Excellence in Outsourcing Award, that is, the foreign actor who possesses the best American accent. There were many worthy Nominees, but the overwhelming winner was House, MD himself, actor Hugh Laurie. That Englishman, one of her majesty's loyal subjects, has been making us all believe that he's just a Jersey boy. As Dr. Gregory House of Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, he sounds like he was born in south Jersey, spent his summers in Asbury Park, and is as much a Garden Stater as Bruce Springsteen and Tony Soprano. NEW YORK - After the Emmys are handed out Sunday, we viewers are going to complain about the winners. Why wouldn't we? Many of us were already squawking about favorite stars and programs that weren't even nominated. And what about whole categories Emmy has never even thought to recognize? Shouldn't an Emmy be presented for Outstanding Achievement in Teeth-Grindingly Unfunny Comedy? Or for Most Irresponsible Display of Violence? This year, the Emmys have a new category for Outstanding Host of a Reality Show. But how about Most Annoying Has-Been to Land a Reality Series In a Last-Ditch Bid for Career Resuscitation? (Who deserves an Emmy more than Bret Michaels?) But I'm done beefing about those awards. It's time to beef 'em up with what I'm calling My Emmys: my categories, my Nominees, my winners that will put right Their Emmys. - For starters, no more doling out Emmys to actors who already have claimed their fair share. Look at Sally Field, nominated this year for "Brothers & Sisters" - for which she won last year as her third career Emmy. Or "Boston Legal's" James Spader, who this year notched his fourth nomination (with three past wins), all for the same role as lawyer Alan Shore. This is clearly too much, and should be dealt with in the only logical way: with a new Award, My Enough Already Emmy. This year's candidates include Tony Shalhoub, who has logged six nominations and could take home his fourth Best Actor Emmy Sunday nigh ...

QUOTE For the second consecutive year, baseball fans voted overwhelmingly for Joe Nuxhall to be on the ballot for the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence that was announced Monday by the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Nuxhall and two longtime Canadian broadcasters, Jacques Doucet and Tom Cheek, were the fans' choices for the ballot. Nuxhall, a fixture with the Cincinnati Reds for 53 years as a pitcher and announcer before his death on Nov. 15, 2007, received 19,547 votes from the record total of 145,138 votes cast in the fans' election. Doucet, who spent his entire 34-year career with the Montreal Expos as the play-by-play radio voice on their French language network, received 10,282 votes. Cheek, who died during the 2005 season, his 28th as the Toronto Blue Jays' radio play-by-play man, got 8,992 votes. The other seven candidates nominated by the Frick Award Committee include a Hall of Fame pitcher, Dizzy Dean, who worked Cardinals and Browns games in St. Louis as well as the national "Game of the Week" in the 1950s and '60s. Tony Kubek, also a former player who did "Game of the Week" telecasts in the 1960s and '70s and later worked in the booth for the Blue Jays and New York Yankees, also made the cut. The other Nominees are former play-by-play voices Ken Coleman (Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox), Lanny Frattare (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Dave Van Horne (Montreal Expos, Florida Marlins); Spanish radio a ...

The dudes in Iron Maiden weren't all that pleased by the recent announcement of Nominees for the Vodafone Live Music Awards , the British awards ceremony that reminds the world just how awesome live music is. It would seem that the band was nominated for "Best Live Return," which is given to the artist that has the greatest comeback show of the year. Only problem? The band never really stopped touring , and as a result Bruce Dickinson & Co. were so offended by being lumped in with such reuniters as the Verve, the Spice Girls, and Led Zeppelin, they actually asked to be unnominated . This resulted in some last-minute scuttling and the following mea culpa from the organizers (via the bad-press-releases clearinghouse Lost In Showbiz ): To: Tony Harding Date: 7-8-2008 18:09 Subject: "Iron Maiden today advised that they do not wish to be featured in this year's Vodafone Live Music Awards category for Best Live Return" Iron Maiden today advised that they do not wish to be featured in this year's Vodafone Live Music Awards category for Best Live Return. Although nominated in this year's category for Best Live Return following their triumphant recent show at Twickenham Stadium, they felt that since they have always toured regularly throughout their careers it would not be at all appropriate for them to be included for an Award for a Best Live Return. Vodafone spokesperson commented "We respect and support the band's decision and have com ...

Hi, I'm Melisse Hinkle and this is your UPI Entertainment Update on this 15th day of May, 2008. Angelina Jolie will add two new babies to her family this summer. The actress has confirmed that she's having twins. But it was Jack Black, not Jolie, who first broke the news. The two stars were in an interview together at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday, when Black reportedly said to Jolie, you'll have as many as the Brady Bunch when you have these. Jolie then acknowledged that she is, in fact, pregnant with twins. The actress is reportedly due on August 19. Anne Heche is getting a temporary break from her child support payments. Now that Men in Trees has been cancelled, the actress reportedly claims she can't afford the nearly $15,000 she's been handing over to ex-husband Coley Laffoon on a monthly basis. A judge is giving Heche a break for the month of July. The actress apparently had less than $35,000 in all of her bank accounts on Tuesday. That's according to an E! News report. Only two competitors remain in the quest for the next 'American Idol.' Syesha Mercado was eliminated last night, leaving David Cook and David Archuleta to battle it out for the title. Mercado thanked her fans on Wednesday's show before singing her farewell song, a cover of the Alicia Keys ballad, If I Ain't Got You. Judge Simon Cowell commented on next week's finale saying, We're going to have a real humdinger. Tony Award Nominees stepped out for a ...
