The debate over same-sex marriage is leaving a false impression, suggesting that Americans are just dying to tie the knot. In fact, evidence suggests that holy matrimony is under siege. The 2000 U.S. Census reported that the "most common household type in the U.S." is now "people living alone." A 2006 article in the New York Times noted an American Community Survey that "found that 49.7 percent, or 55.2 million, of the nation’s 111.1 million households in 2005 were made up of married couples — with and without children — just shy of a majority and down from more than 52 percent five years earlier." Many factors are fueling these trends. The vast majority of Americans still marry at sometime during their lives — though increasing numbers are content to simply live with their partners, forsaking the formal obligations of marriage. Americans are getting married later, extending their single years. Many married people return to singledom through the divorce; and, thanks to modern medicine, many surviving spouses spent their long last years as single widows and widowers. That said, the evidence is clear that the bells tolling for the institution of marriage are not happy ones. How come? Frances E. Dolan, a professor of English at the University of California at Davis, addresses this question in her new book, Marriage and Violence: The Early Modern Legacy (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2008). As Carlin Romano writes in a warm review ... Source: www.pittsburghlive.com --- 1 day ago
