In November 2007 I saw the Bob Dylan Biopic I'm Not There directed by Todd Haynes .  In May 2008  I viewed the DVD version of the film. In the DVD version there was the option to view the film with commentary by Todd Haynes.  At 9 AM this morning I was going to go out and sit on a park bench to read, but there was a brief shower.  I came back upstairs and put the DVD on and watched listening to the commentary which overrode the dialog.  I was able to understand more about the intracacies of the film by hearing his comments.  Since Todd was born in 1961, he was a small child during Dylan's prominence in the mid 1960s.  He gave credit to his editor Jay Rabinowitz for being the Dylan expert on his staff.  My suggestion is that if you buy or rent a movie on DVD, you should view the special features. ...

Malkmus v. Haynes There are very few people in music I like and respect more than Stephen Malkmus. Nevermind the fact that he essentially soundtracked my college experience and wrote songs that I will be singing and humming (and still trying to decifer his intentionally cryptic lyrics) the rest of my life. On the couple of occasions I have had the opportunity to meet and talk to the man, he is a genuine, nice guy, very funny, and completely without pretension and arrogance. Which belies the fact that he remains one of the best songwriters of my (or any) generation.  And there are few filmmakers whom I have more respect and admiration for than Todd Haynes. He has been hitting them consistently out of the park since 'Velvet Goldmine,' and his most recent film, the pseudo-Dylan-biopic 'I'm Not There,' is one of the best films I've seen recently. My love of Dylan has been written about in this space before ( Dylan ), so there is no need to get into that again, but Haynes' film added a unique twist to the mythology and romance of Dylan's story by eschewing characters named Dylan entirely, instead representing Bob with diverse character studies that were elusive yet entirely real. I was lucky enough to attend the advance screening at the Walker that was introduced by the film's producer, Christine Vachon, who held a Q & A afterwords that helped shed some light on Todd's vision, and what it took to make that work on film. The picture blew me ...

Author-Poet Aberjhani reviewed: I'm Not There (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) DVD ~ Christian Bale   1 of 2 people found the following review helpful: Where in the World is Bob Dylan in this Movie? , May 30, 2008 The title of I'M NOT THERE comes from a Bob Dylan song of the same name. In the song, the iconic singer/songwriter/actor/activist seems to lament the ups and downs of his relationship with a woman described as "my prize-forsaken angel," and "a long-hearted mystic." Where Todd Haynes' and co-screenwriter Oren Moverman's ultra-brilliant movie is concerned, that same title might be applied to two things. The first is the succession of public images--from committed folk artist and "radical" activist to evangelical disciple and reclusive outlaw--that Dylan has famously projected throughout his long phenomenal career, allowing the public access to these personas while battling to safeguard the integrity of his true core identity. The title's second reference may be to the fact that our hero himself is nowhere to be seen in the film (except in fleeting parting glimpses) but six other gifted performers acting as him, or as parts of him at different points in his life, are. Generally described as a "biopic," I'm Not There actually trashes and reinvents that film category, whether done so intentionally or not. The various actors who portray Dylan's creative and spiritual qualities for this movie do more than simply mimic the performer. T ...
