I fear for the future of Time Travel. Not the real thing: That seems to be coming along swimmingly, according to a handful of renegade physicists (more on that in The Future! of this column). No, I'm more worried about that venerable pop institution fictional Time Travel. It's getting airier, subtler, distressingly less Rube Goldbergian: No fewer than four extant network shows — Heroes , the soon-to-return Lost , and two newcomers, Life on Mars and Fringe — involve some form of Time Travel minus any obvious chronos-crunching machine. The new Time travelers epoch-hop on pure longing, head injury, or strength of will alone — sizzling portals and sparking gizmos are now rendered beside the point. Sure, some might see this as the genre maturing, but to me it looks an awful lot like downsizing. Hello? McFly? Whither the DeLoreans of yesteryear? Outta Time, it seems. Which says something about The Present. Time-Travel stories are wonderfully dated, pristine core samples of the ages that birthed them. In A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889), an early instance, Mark Twain was essentially refighting the Civil War in satire. His mode of transport? A bump on the head. Twain was in the machine age but not of it. But just a few years later in 1895, H. G. Wells embraced the industrial: The Time Machine was an au courant postcolonial parable, but more to the point, it described Time Travel via device in detail — and became a timeless so ...

We've traveled quite a bit this month at Apartment Therapy. Staycationing, vacationing, sightseeing--it's all been amazing but we noticed no one had mentioned Time traveling. At long last, we have found just the storefront to pull it off with the Echo Park Time Travel Mart. From the outside, it's a really neat store selling everything from mammoth chunks to dead languages in a bottle. While the Time Travel Mart is kitschy and fun it's what's hidden from the public eye that is really the cat's meow. At the rear of the space, the store does double duty serving as a non-profit tutoring center. It's real name is 826LA dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative writing skills. So why the Time Travel Storefront? Apparently the zoning of the first center in San Francisco required there to be a retail space as the storefront. So instead of the usual book store or art gallery, the amusing storefront was born. What's best is when you buy your next six-pack of bottled Time, the proceeds go directly back to the center for funding. Hey Guys-- heading to the beach for one last sand castle before this summer gig is up? Maybe you need some advice about how to frame that charming sea shanty! We'll be running a Travel article over on School of Stock next week, but I got such great information from Endless Vacation Magazine's Moya McAllister when interviewing her for said article, that I thought I'd share some with ya now. There she is, above. Moya currently produces and directs photography for many of Story Worldwide 's publications, especially Travel magazine Endless Vacation for RCI and also clients such as UPS, Bank of America, ILORI, Unilever and others. She is involved in concepting shoots, hiring photographers and stylists, casting models and directing shoots on-location. Moya is going to parse two layout in the magazine for us-- she'll tell us why she chooses which images, how they're made, and essentially let us into her head. Thanks, Moya! All the following words are Ms. McAllister's. ___ Endless Vacation Magazine's motto is Play - Eat - Shop - Relax - Explore.  Each feature story we publish, whether it's themed a "Relax" story or an "Eat" story, will incorporate the motto throughout, especially visually. For an 8 page feature - each of these photographers probably shot 10-16 hours a day for 4-5 days. They probably captured over 2500 images on the shoot, and turned over about 500 images for my edit. We publish somewhere between 15-25 images per feature story. ...

Step back in the simpler and free spirited days of the "Fifties" with a luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Grand Avenue Methodist Church at Seventh and Grand Avenue. This Fifties Musical Extravaganza will bring back the poodle skirts for girls, the greased back hair for guys, the rolled up sleeve of a white t-shirt and the rolled up jeans worn by both the guys and girls of the era. "We are going to have a wonderful Time," Carolyn Moore, president of the Grand Avenue United Methodist Women, said. "It is also going for a good cause. Moore said the Grand Avenue Methodist Women want everyone to come out to celebrate the "Fifties" with a stroll down memory lane with some history of the American Classic Era. "We are going to have the fellowship hall decorated in a special way reflecting the 1950s," Moore said. "There are going to be a number of people dressed in period pieces." The Grand Avenue Methodist Church, which has one of the most active units in the district with 86 members on the roll, support a number of projects, both local and statewide, Moore said. "On a local level, we support the ICCM Food Bank and 'Coats for Kids,'" Moore said. "We also support Camp Aldersgate, which is a camp for physical disabled children." Moore said Camp Aldersgate, which is owned by United Methodist Women Organization, enables the children to participate in a number of outside activities including horseback riding, archery, swimming, arts ...

There are obvious benefits to Time Travel. There's the get-rich-quick scheme, of course: Zooming back to capitalize on a lusty stock, or buying the Mona Lisa for pennies. And the heroic: What red-blooded American wouldn't blow up Hitler with a bazooka in 1931? These are fantasies with universal appeal; who wouldn't want to correct past mistakes or capitalize on future knowledge? Unfortunately, there is also no way to predict the domino effect that changing the past would have on the future. Messing with the stock market could mess with the larger economy. Destroying Hitler could inadvertently lead to an even worse dictator rising in his stead. Ultimately, Time Travel's safest use may be as a dramatic device in a story. ...
