Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant still has the top-selling NBA jersey in China based on sales at retail stores in China during the 2007-08 season, according to the NBA. Bryant’s jersey was the top seller in 2006-07, too. Meanwhile, Heat guard Dwyane Wade’s jersey has dropped from 4th most popular in 2006-07 to 8th this past season. Kevin Garnett, of the 2008 NBA Champion Boston Celtics, has the most popular jersey in the U.S. and second most popular in China. Of the 10 top-selling jerseys in China, Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs and Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets have fallen off the list between 2006-07 and 2007-08, replaced by Paul Pierce of the Celtics and Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic. The league opened its first two NBA stores outside the U.S. in Beijing in July. Sales at the stores have exceeded projections by almost 70 percent already and 1,000 people were lined up outside for the grand opening of one of the stores. Here’s the list of top 10 best-selling NBA jerseys in China compared with 2006-07: 2007-08 Top Selling Jerseys in China 1) Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers 2) Kevin Garnett, Boston Celtics 3) Tracy McGrady, Houston Rockets 4) Paul Pierce, Boston Celtics 5) Allen Iverson, Denver Nuggets 6) Gilbert Arenas, Washington Wizards 7) LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers 8) Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat 9) Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic 10) Yao Ming, Houston Rockets 2006-07 Top Selling Jerseys in China 1) Kobe Bryant, L ...

Los Angeles Times's Tim Rutten is at it again. In an op-ed in today's paper (Wed. 8/6/08), Rutten buttresses a new book by author Ron Suskind and asserts that "Vice President Dick Cheney and his inner circle long have insisted " that Iraq was directly connected to the September 11 attacks. Rutten's claim is an easy one to debunk. Here's Vice President Cheney in a Meet the Press interview with Tim Russert a mere five days after the September 11 attacks: RUSSERT: Do we have any evidence linking Saddam Hussein or Iraqis to this operation? [Sept. 11 attacks] VICE PRES. CHENEY: No. Does it get any simpler than "No"? Cheney's words also strike a major blow to a wild accusation in Suskind's new book. According to Politico's Mike Allen (and quoted by Rutten), Suskind claims, "The White House had concocted a fake letter [that] said that 9/11 ringleader [Mohamed] Atta had actually trained for his mission in Iraq -- thus showing, finally, that there was an operational link between Saddam and Al Qaeda, something the vice president's office had been pressing CIA to prove since 9/11 as a justification to invade Iraq ." There's a lot more that can be written about the media's wild claims about Vice President Cheney's public remarks before the Iraq War. I addressed this in a September 2006 post . NB's Brad Wilmouth also addressed the same issue in a November 2005 post . ...

The Billerica Board of Appeals got their first look at a proposal for a 40B senior housing complex which the town’s elders will get first consideration. Rose Hill Manor, as the proposal is called, consists of 41 units for seniors 62 and older situated on a 3.2-acre parcel of land located behind St. Theresa’s. The site is part of 15-acres owned by the Boston Archdiocese. Thirty-five of the units will be partly funded by the state, with the occupants paying 30 percent of their income. For these, income cannot exceed $29,700 for a single-family unit or $33,900 for two-family. The remaining five tenants will be charged a flat rate based on their income. The income for these single-family units cannot exceed $35,640 homes, and the occupants of the two-family units cannot have a yearly income greater than $40,680. The final unit will be occupied by the complex manager. Doris Pearson, chairperson of the board, said the approval process will take longer than most developments, because of the state law it falls under. Chapter 40B requires that 10 percent of a town’s housing qualify as affordable. “We’ll be setting hearings for a peer review to study traffic and engineering,” Pearson said at the Wednesday, Aug. 6 meeting. “There will most likely be several hearings.” Engineer Tim Williams with Allen Majors and Associates outlined the development. There will be 42 parking spaces, far more than the 16 required under town bylaws. Since the develo ...

Like all good Scottish tales, BRIGADOON (the delightful musical now playing at the Glendale Centre Theatre) contains sweet romance, bawdy comedy and a touch of poignancy. It also has a score full of lovely romantic songs, like my favorite, "Almost Like Being in Love." The story is about a magical village that appears for one day every one hundred years. There are laws that protect the town and keep its inhabitants safe from outside influence, but they are about to be tested. Two young men from New York (Tim Dietlein as Tommy and Kelly Flynn as Jeff) get lost while on a hunting trip and stumble upon Brigadoon just as it is appearing in the mist. The town is preparing for the wedding of Charlie Dalrymple (played by Allen Everman,... more ...

It was a night of first-time winners in the 2008 racing season at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway on Saturday, July 26 as the track crew fought quick-moving incoming storms to complete the racing card. The USRA Modified feature saw St Louis driver Steve Picou bring the field down for the green flag with Scotty Allen on his outside. Picou jumped to the early lead as Rex Merritt shot to the outside lane from row 2 to grab second place. Picou and Merritt battled early until lap 4 when Picou began to open a little distance. Last week’s winner Justin Neuman, Allen and a late arriving Tony Jackson Jr. along with Jimmy Willis were battling for position. On lap 8 Merritt began to reel Picou back in and cut the lead to 4 cars. On lap 11, the race’s only caution waved for debris in turn 2. On the restart Merritt tried the low side early, but Picou shot back ahead as Allen, Neuman and Jackson and Willis were battling hard. Merritt tried several times to make the pass, but it was Picou grabbing his first win of the season in his first start with Merritt, Neuman, Allen and Jackson completing the top five. Bomber The Bomber feature would find a first time winner for this season as defending champion Landon Johnson took early advantage of his front row pole spot by jumping out to the early lead as current point leader Joe Francis pulled to the inside groove and gave chase. Behind the lead duo, Shawn Stong, last week’s winner Tim Jones, Dennis Jones a ...

After enjoying a successful road trip winning five of six games, the Southern Illinois Miners returned home in front of a crowd of 5,284 fans at Rent One Park Friday night. There was only one problem. The Miners left their winning ways somewhere on I-57. Three Evansville pitchers combined on an eight-hitter en route to a 4-1 victory over Southern Illinois, which left the bases loaded in the ninth inning when Tim Dorn struck out swinging. With the loss, the Miners (47-32) had their four-game winning streak snapped and their lead in the Frontier League West Division shrunk to just one-half game over Windy City (46-32), which has won 14 of its last 15 games. Southern Illinois hasn't exactly enjoyed home-field advantage, falling to 22-21 at Rent One Park this season. On the other hand, the Miners have been sparkling on the road with a league-best 25-11 mark. "It's been a long time out on the road," Miners manager Mike Pinto said. "But you know what? Teams that win championships find a way to suck it up after getting back off the road and still play good baseball. "We didn't get the starting pitching that we were hoping for and had opportunities we let go by the wayside. I thought overall we were flat tonight." Chris Allen struggled with his control from the first inning, falling behind nearly every hitter he faced. Even when he got ahead of a batter, the righthander had problems closing the deal. With two outs and two runners on base ...
