Our Peacock friends at NBC have taken my recent advice and decided for a third consecutive week to get Tiki Barber out of the studio and have him report directly from a Giants game, deeply mysterious, well-connected sources familiar with the plans tell WatchDog. Not only that, but Barber is sitting down with Eli Manning for an interview that will air Sunday before the game. Manning famously took a verbal shot at Barber during training camp in 2007. If Barber can pry anything close to that interesting out of Manning during this week's interview, he deserves an Emmy. This concludes my blogging day. When I was a kid, that would cue the national anthem, followed by a test pattern. (UPDATE: WatchDog sources have alerted me that the woman in the peacock outfit is Karolína Kurková, a regular at Knicks and Rangers games whose father, Josef Kurka, played pro hoops in the Czech Republic. Now you know.) ...

by Ryan Wilson Filed under: Giants , NFC East , NFL Fans , NFL Media Watch It was during the 2007 preseason that retired Giants running back Tiki Barber proclaimed on NBC's Football Night in America that former teammate Eli Manning lacked the requisite leadership skills to lead New York. Of course, they won the whole thing a few months later. Uncharacteristically, Manning promptly refuted Barber's claim , and now, some 16 months later, Tiki is looking to mend a few fences. According to the New York Daily News ' Ralph Vacchiano, Barber interviewed Manning recently and the topic came up (we'll get to see them during tonight's NBC pregame show): Barber: "So before last season on NBC, I publicly questioned your early leadership. Now, clearly I was proven wrong. But what was your reaction when you heard?" Manning: "I obviously had to stand up for myself. I kind felt I was called out. So I had to come back and stand up for myself. I felt in that situation, I had to say something. Sometimes, you've got to go outside what's your norm and do something you feel strongly about. I've been through all sorts of things in New York City through the media. There's a time when you reach a certain point where you've got to stand up and fight back a little bit." Well, Tiki Barber obviously wasn't shy about acknowledging the elephant in the room when he sat down with Eli Manning for an interview airing on NBC Sunday night: Tiki Barber: So before last season on NBC, I publicly questioned your early leadership. Now clearly I was proven wrong. But what was your reaction when you heard? ELI MANNING: I obviously had to stand up for myself. I kind of felt I was called out. So I had to come back and stand up for myself. I felt in that situation, I had to say something. Sometimes, you’ve got to go outside what's your norm and do something you feel strongly about. I've been through all sorts of things in New York City through the media. There's a time when you reach a certain point where you’ve got to stand up and fight back a little bit. Barber: I think the New York Giants have taken on your personality, not Tom Coughlin’s, but yours. Is there a point when you thought to yourself, or you felt to yourself, ‘This team, at least this offense, it's mine now?' MANNING: I have felt that the team and a little bit of the offense has taken that philosophy. We have some guys on our offense or in the coaching staff, who kind of get tensed up. And whether that's Coughlin or Kevin Gilbride their intensity, I tried to stay calm. And they might be yelling at me. But I just keep my cool. And I think that helps keep everybody on the sideline relaxed. ...

My Friday newspaper column includes an item on Tiki Barber's transformation on NBC from borderline-irrelevant studio talking head to news-making, on-site reporter at four consecutive Giants games. Barber had an interesting sit-down with Eli Manning last week in which they discussed the unpleasantness between them in 2007. Barber said the two "cleared the air" long ago, "but it was good to do on it national television just to say it, so people don’t speculate about it." Barber said he "jumped" at the chance to leave the studio, and he hopes the strategy will continue in 2009. "This is what I’ve been doing [on the 'Today' show], not sitting back and giving analysis of something I’m not intimately involved with. I enjoy that. I'm curious by nature. Being able to report on things and do interviews with guys drives something in me." Barber believes the perceived bad blood between him and some in the Giants' organization has been grossly overstated. But his request to sit down this week with Tom Coughlin quickly was declined. ...

Good job by NBC getting Tiki Barber out of the studio - where he often disappeared in a forest of other voices - and having him report from the Giants' games against the Redskins and Eagles. Send the guy to Dallas Sunday, Peacocks! Why not? That's all for me today. Enjoy the 1958 Moore/Durelle bout on ESPN Classic at 1 a.m. It will be 50 years to the day since the big bout at the Montreal Forum. Yo, ESPN Classic, THAT is the kind of creative thinking/programming you should be about more of the time. ...

Just to make it official regarding the matter of Tiki Barber's request to sit down with Tom Coughlin for NBC this week . . . I asked Pat Hanlon, the Giants' VP of communications, about the prospects for such a chat. Response: “In the spirit of the holidays, let me put it to you this way: You and I will be leading Mass on Christmas morning at St. Pat's before this week's proposed interview takes place.” ...

Speaking of NBC (see past two posts), I spoke to Tiki Barber Tuesday about his recent chat with Eli Manning and his next on-site gig - covering the Giants for a fourth consecutive week when they host the Panthers Sunday. Barber said for this week he is trying to land a sitdown with another big-name Giant with whom he has had issues in the past: Tom Coughlin, about whom Manning had interesting comments last week. Barber did not sound optimistic, nor should he be. The interview has as much chance of happening as Ed Werder has of co-authoring a tell-all book with T.O. ...

I, sadly, am not. My flight to Newark this morning was cancelled. I was on the standby list for an overbooked flight that left just a few minutes ago, but there weren't any takers for the generous voucher packages offered at the gate -- not even DiTrani would take the voucher to rearrange his schedule! -- and so I'm here in Dallas for another few hours at minimum, but perhaps the rest of the day. The good news is that Tiki and former SNLer Jimmy Fallon did get on the flight and are currently headed back to Newark. I guess NBC does have some pull even if they make people rent cars. The other good news is that, as Glauber proved last year when he was stuck in Milwaukee (I think it was Milwaukee), sitting in an airport for a day is good for blogging. We'll see how that works out. I know you're all worried about me (eyes rolling). I'll keep you posted. ...

Honorable Mention: Matt Millen . I don't know that Matt Millen actually deserves an award, but it's got to be a long time since anyone's given him one, so I say he at least gets a mention here. I maintain that when Cris Collinsworth is absent, Millen is the best analyst in the NBC studio . Granted, this puts him ahead of only Jerome Bettis and Tiki Barber , a status that could be reached by most of the guys who had those old, "CALL NOW, AND FOR ABSOLUTELY FREE, YOU'LL GET MY 100% GUARANTEED, STONE COLD, LEADPIPE LOCK FOR THIS MONDAY NIGHT'S GAME" commercials. I found this interview honest and entertaining, too. 5. Brian Westrook . Westbrook gets the fifth spot, provided he agrees to split custody of the non-existent award with Donovan McNabb . Westbrook went over 100 total rushing and receiving yards, but most of it came on one spectacular game-sealing play. McNabb, meanwhile, didn't have numbers that'll bowl you over -- 23 of 34, 300 yards, one touchdown and one interception -- but when he was contrasted on the same field with Tarvaris Jackson , McNabb looked spectacular. He did the right things when he was under pressure and kept the Eagles in control of the game. 4. Larry Fitzgerald . Fitzgerald not only had six catches for 101 yards, but he authored the prettiest highlight of wild card weekend. The catch he made in the end zone off of the Edgerrin James -to- Kurt Warner flea flicker was just a masterpiece of body control and athleti ...
