The Dow has been down six of the last seven weeks. It's a pretty weak market. However, since the low set July 15th we've seen a rotation as money flowed out from the oil and material sectors and into the financials. Last week was like a tug of war with the Dow down 200 Monday; up 200 Tuesday and Wednesday; followed by down 200 Thursday and finished the week almost where it started. If the financials really can get its legs underneath we could be in for a better market going forward. I would like to see broader participation from other sectors before buying in. read more ...

Beijing I don't think it's too much of an exaggeration to say I grew up with Alf Stewart . Not literally, of course, but it would be fair to say the man who owned nearly half of Summer Bay's going concerns was a tremendous influence on me. His cut-to-the-chase straight-talking, his old codger shell hiding a sweetly sentimental centre, his raging against an incomprehensible world, his very essence...he spoke to me as a youngster. I heard that voice again on Tuesday and it was coming from the mouth of Australian swimming coach Alan Thompson. There were moments during Tuesday's Aussie swimming press conference when I could have sworn "Thommo" was aching to call somebody a " flamin' galah " or cry "strike my living harry" at the sheer wrongness of it all. The IOC nearly got it for selling out to US TV over swim finals in the mornings, the media almost wore it for hyping the Speedo LZR suit , the Chinese could have copped it for letting some of Beijing's totally fine really air into the Water Cube during Monday's "blue sky day" white-out. It was a virtuoso performance from my new favourite head coach and, if you allow me to walk the Tightrope of national stereotypes for a while, served as perfect reference point for three very different press conferences. The first up was Team GB's thoroughly OK effort at the Johnson & Johnson Pavilion . The US Acuvue-to-Zyrtec giant is one of Beijing 2008's sponsors or partners or suppliers (I forget w ...

Remember when Ra used to be as big as Dylan and the Beatles? Crazy times. Today, though, the old sunboat is showing the miles, playing tired old hits to polite applause at state fairs and half-crowded casinos. This is the Ra the Pica Beats sing about in "Poor Old Ra", anyway-- the aging deity as a forgotten idol. "No one gives a shit about your falcon head anymore," laments head Beat Ryan Barrett over what sounds like an oboe honking a touching eulogy. On the first half of the song (from the band's sophomore album, Beating Back the Claws of the Cold , out in September on Hardly Art), Ashlee Hunter harmonizes sympathetically, the Isis to Barrett's Osiris, then becomes his foil when "Poor Old Ra" changes shape suddenly and the band constructs a careful metaphor about tension on the Tightrope. I'm not sure what that has to do with Ra's declining years, but that eloquent coda holds the song's holiest hook. MP3:> The Pica Beats: "Poor Old Ra" [from Beating Back the Claws of the Cold ; due 09/23/08 on Hardly Art ] ...

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS   Judd Apatow productions have become the most august of August movies, and this one starring Seth Rogen and James Franco as stoners on the run from a killer cop and drug lord is practically guaranteed to follow in the lofty footsteps of ``The 40-Year-Old Virgin'' and ``Superbad.'' But I’m a little puzzled over the decision to entrust the story to director David Gordon Green, whose previous four movies have been shoe-gazing downers. Does he even know what comedy is? THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS 2 Same four girls, same old magical pants and more of the same mix of family drama and wayward romances. The only difference is that they’re no longer girls, and two of them, Blake Lively and America Ferrara, are now the ones with the hit TV shows and Alexis Bledel  and Amber Tamblyn are the ones scrounging for Hollywood’s scraps. MAN ON WIRE James Marsh’s acclaimed documentary about Philippe Petit, the Frenchman who famously walked a Tightrope he clandestinely strung between the twin towers of the World Trade Center in 1974, examines the thirst for adventure and the power of determination in conquering the impossible. Incorporating a combination of home movies, archival footage and re-enactments to accent interviews with Petit and the people who helped him pull it off, Marsh gets to the heart of what makes a man so eager to cheat death.   ALSO OPENING     BOTTLE SHOCK:   The husband and wife team of Randall Mil ...

In the arena of criminal justice, judges walk a Tightrope when it comes to making sure the punishment fits the crime. The requirements of the law carry the most weight on the scales of justice, but judges also must balance those mandates with recommendations from prosecutors and the wishes expressed by victims and their families. Finding that middle ground is the challenge judges must face. “Sometimes we’re going to have a victim that isn’t going to be happy absent the death penalty,” said John Simpson, chief prosecutor for the Massillon City Prosecutor’s Office. “We allow victims to have some say in sentencing within reason.” MySpace ban Recently, Massillon Municipal Judge Edward Elum took the unusual step of banning an offender from using MySpace and Facebook pages for five years. Christopher Bixler, 18, of Tuscarawas Township, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of negligent vehicular homicide stemming from the March traffic crash that took the life of a 55-year-old Canton woman in Jackson Township. Bixler received 60 days in jail and 90 days of house arrest. Elum said his decision to ban Bixler from having a MySpace page was based solely on comments made by one of the victims at Bixler’s sentencing hearing. “They seemed to be very offended that he would go on MySpace with some sort of bravado about his exploits,” Elum said. “I know in talking to (Massillon Police) Det. Bobby Grizzard that this stuff can get people into trou ...
