Thomas Beattie, 34, has delivered a healthy baby girl. If you're not familiar with the story, back in late March, Beattie wrote a personal account for the gay news site The Advocate about his experiences becoming pregnant because his wife could no longer bear children. You see, Beattie was once a woman and had a sex change operation but chose to keep the lower girl parts . So Beattie was still able to conceive - And now Beattie is a new mom...er...dad..um...parent. TMZ had apparently reported the baby was a caesarean birth. But ABC discounted that, saying the birth was "natural," according to one of its sources. Now thanks to Oprah Winfrey , we know that, in fact, Beattie does not have a penis implant, but has an enlarged clitoris that looks like a small penis... Poor baby! The two word opening is not condescending. Can you imagine the little baby being utterly confused between mom and dad. He told People magazine he decided to get pregnant after wife of five years Nancy had a hysterectomy. So to answer the question: how can a man be pregnant? Well, Beatie actually used to be a woman, then decided he wanted to be a man, and then decided he wanted to have a baby. When he had surgery to become a man, he had his breasts removed and was given testosterone to make him look and sound like a man, but he chose to keep his female reproductive organs. So Beatie is really a man/woman hybrid. Call him a freak, if you like. Baby incubating aside, renting a womb aside, switching roles aside, I found this very interesting. Beattie has a penchant for coining words. Look at this play on maternity clothes: 'Unfortunately, they don't make man-ternity clothes,' he remarked recently. Is it progress? While the debate rages on whether Thomas Beatie, a transgender, can really be considered a man if he's pregnant, the fact still remains, at one time, Thomas Beattie was someone's little girl. About Beatie's delicate condition, his family has publicly said the child will be "a monster." How sad his family has rejected him (and his unborn child). But it's hard to imagine what I would do if years from now my daughter announced she was off to Mexico for a sex-change operation.
It's easy to write of the whole Thomas Beatie saga as weird, but what would you do if it was your daughter?
