Source: holykaw.alltop.com --- 5 days ago According to a study by Berkeley scientists, the lingering toxins of cigarette Smoke on furniture, clothing, and skin could be risks for cancer. Scientists say that the Smoke residue reacts to common pollutants creating a chemical called tobacco-specific nitrosamines or TSNAs. Researchers are recommending a complete ban on smoking in homes and vehicles. Opponents are skeptical of the study alleging propaganda, "The aim, it seems, is to generate alarm in the hope that people will be stopped from smoking or will give up," said Simon Clark, director of the smokers' lobby group Forest. Scientists continue their study on Third-HandSmoke, but Clark has already nailed the conclusion -- stop smoking. Full story at BBC . More on Health . Source: www.dallasfortworthinjurylawyer.com --- 21 days ago Tobacco Smoke contamination lingering on furniture, clothes and other surfaces, dubbed thirdhand Smoke, may react with indoor air chemicals to form potential cancer-causing substances, a study found. After exposing a piece of paper to Smoke, researchers found the sheet had levels of newly formed carcinogens that were 10 times higher after three hours in the presence of an indoor air chemical called nitrous acid commonly emitted by household appliances or cigarette Smoke. That means people may face a risk from indoor tobacco Smoke in a way that’s never been recognized before, said one of the study’s authors, Lara Gundel. Read the full Bloomberg article here. ...
Source: www.babble.com.au --- 25 days ago Still another reason to quit smoking: a new study has found that Third -HandSmoke (the nicotine that adheres to surfaces long after the cigarette is extinguished) can be harmful to all humans, but especially babies and toddlers. When this residue combines with ambient nitrous acid (commonly emitted from unvented gas appliances), it can transform into a deadly carcinogen. And no, stepping outside won’t help, as the nicotine still attaches itself to your clothes. “These results may be just the tip of the iceberg,” said Kamlesh Asotra of the University of California’s Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program, which funded this study. So if you Smoke, and you have kids, please just stop. Okay? ...

Source: longevity.about.com --- 28 days ago Most everyone knows the dangers of smoking. We can all intuitively appreciate the dangers of second HandSmoke (breathing in the Smoke from a person near you who is smoking). But researchers are just now beginning to understand the dangers of ThirdHandSmoke. What is ThirdHandSmoke? ThirdHandSmoke is traces cigarette or cigar use that remain in the environment after a person has put out the cigarette or cigar. What happens is that the Smoke interacts with surfaces in the environment to produce something called tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs). These TSNAs are cancer-causing agents, TSNAs can linger in a environment for weeks or more, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science online on Feb 8 by Hugo Destaillatas and others. This is just one more reason to stop smoking and to not hang out in environments in which people have been smoking (like cars and bars). Source: nanilaie.info --- 28 days ago I’ve blogged before about my feelings and experiences on first- and second-Hand tobacco Smoke . . . but I have to admit I was kinda’ surprised this past week to learn there’s such a thing as Third-HandSmoke — tobacco Smoke contamination that lingers in the environment after a cigarette has been extinguished. A quick Google™ search reveals that many people, “particularly smokers, have no idea that Third-HandSmoke — the cocktail of toxins that linger in carpets, sofas, clothes and other materials hours or even days after a cigarette is put out — is a health hazard for infants and children.” In other words, long after the second-HandSmoke has cleared. In retrospect, I’ve known about Third-HandSmoke for a long time; I just didn’t know it was called that. For example, I’ve been requesting non-smoking rooms at hotels and motels for years, because there’s no question the smell of second-Hand tobacco Smoke can permeate a room . . . and it’s especially gross in a pillow. Now imagine that’s what infants and toddlers are breathing in when they crawl and play on carpets infused with Third-HandSmoke. In another more recent example, I rented a car from a national chain where the contract spelled out that a hefty cleaning fee would be charged for those who smoked in the car. Very interesting, and yes, I also now request non-smoking rental cars. The Google page I read indicated there are no studies yet that, unlike second-HandSmoke, directly tie th ...

Source: smokefreewisconsin.blogspot.com --- 32 days ago PHOTO ILLUSTRATION BY REINHARD HUNGER SET DESIGN BY SARAH ILLENBERGER Third-HandSmoke is an emerging area of scientific inquiry. Following my return from Lake Tahoe, at the Clearing the Air Institute , I was all fired up about Third-HandSmoke issues. While the science is still emerging, I think at least anecdotally people believe the the residue left behind from smoking is smelly. For example when a smoker moves out of their home Realtors often recommend painting or cleaning surfaces. That smell that is left behind contains toxic chemicals which off-gas for long periods of time. While the cancer risk is unknown it is clear that if someone is smoking in an enclosed space there will be toxic chemicals from that smoking left behind. As a result of this emerging research people have taken steps like have a Smoke-free home policy or moving into an multi-unit housing development that is 100% Smoke-free in all its units. Other people don't allow smoking in their vehicles. What are readers doing about this issue? Have you been educating others about this issue as well?
