I recommend Ratzinger's Faith by Tracey Rowland (pub OUP) which is a very good study of PB's Theology. She gives a very good historical summary of Theology before and after Vatican II. She points out that liberals and traditionalists tend to see Vatican II as a decisive break whereas Pope Benedict and the Resourcement group emphasise the "Hermeneutic of Continuity." She shows how the Pope criticised the "dualistic" nature of some pre conciliar Thomism and... ... Source: forums.catholic.com --- 5 days ago
Hi, I'd really appreciate prayers right now, as I'm in the process of applying for Theological College. I don't have all the entry requirements needed of me, because I could not afford to go to college for A levels; but I am hoping so dearly I get in to this university theological college, and I'd really appreciate all your prayers for God's commendation to the decision makers, and for Him to uphold me in my journey to serve Him Thank you, God bless ... By Rod Anderson Spiritually Speaking, (that is this column’s name after all) how’s your fall schooling in the faith going so far? If that’s a fair question in any and every school from preschools and kindergarten to graduate schools and lifelong learning classes, then it’s also a fair fall question one month into Sunday school and religious education courses about faith and Theology. read more ... While one might assume that discussions of Theology and postmodernism are for those in academia, in Coffeehouse Theology, Ed takes on the important task of explaining why every believer should know and care about Theology and postmodernism. Whether we are aware of it or not, we all have a Theology. Theology - what we believe about God [...] ... Source: julieclawson.com --- 5 days ago
As I mentioned yesterday, I often feel like I am either the most conservative or the most liberal person in a crowd (theologically in particular). No matter what others may try to dismiss me as, I really don’t fit those traditional categories. And it’s not just that I inhabit some murky middle ground [...] ... So many books, so little time. This one got my attention — COFFEEHOUSE Theology: Reflecting on God in Everyday Life by Ed Cyzewski. The title is inviting to the masses, but the part that is crucial is how it surfaces the issue of how culture shapes Theology! The blog book tour starts today, runs through [...] ... I was thinking Whole nations, at least the entire world of finance and investment, are presently watching the unraveling of money—the “only critical ingredient of life!” No one knows what to do. Politicians are acting without integrity—but that is not new. Large banks are having to assert their liquidity, and the louder the assertions, the harder it is to believe them! No one wants to acknowledge that we have reached the limits of intellectual ability. We constantly run to history to guide us. And yet, the valuable lessons of history seem to be irrelevant to an entirely new hyper-global reality. While history can give counsel for the present, the past was never adequate to control present decisions. Earlier circumstances were unique, just like today’s conditions are unusual. God places socio-political-economic history at His feet. Nations and leaders (the best and most powerful) seek to shed His authority (Psalm 2:2), but that’s a bad move that invites quick judgment. “We should have seen it coming, only I didn’t think it would come so fast,” expressed an investment banking expert. Certainly, like that Psalm notes, “the nations are in tumultuous rage.” Yesterday, a rumor caused panicked hundreds to run to their banks in order to withdraw their money. “Imaginary vanity” consumes the finest financial minds of the world as they deal with a pace of change and depth of complexity never before experienced. What can humanity do then? They can ... Source: catholicanalysis.blogspot.com --- 30 days ago
In the political talk radio world, there is a very famous host who likes to refer to the biased attacks of the mainstream media as the attacks of the "drive-by's." A "drive-by" attack is an attack that is unprovoked, baseless, superficial, and at times even blatantly slanderous. Well, we have those kinds of attacks even among those who write on religion. We have them even among fellow Catholics. I noticed the relevance of this "drive-by" analogy when thinking of attacks on the web by so-called self-described "orthodox" Catholics on Catholic charismatics (who are also orthodox and, arguably, more orthodox because they fully embrace the co-essential charismatic dimension of the Church). Two particular examples, in my own experience, come to mind; both, to great scandal, written by ordained clergy. What are the marks of the drive-by theological attack? If you know the marks, you will spot the genre more readily and thus be able to withstand the rhetorical ambush. 1. In one example I recall, the attack began with outright slander of the highest and worst degree. That's an easy clue for the reader that the rest of the attack is sound and fury signifying nothing. 2. Even when outright, objectively malicious slander is not the opening shot, the signs begin to clearly emerge that the writer has utterly failed to fully investigate with care and with the good faith discipline of responsible thought the matter that he is writing about in his driv ...
