Former White House aide David H. Safavian, whose lying and obstruction convictions connected to the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal were tossed out by a three-judge panel in June, will go back to court in December for a new trial, according to court documents. Safavian, 41, the former chief of staff of the General Services Administration, was convicted in U.S. District Court in June 2006 of covering up his efforts to help Abramoff buy two GSA-controlled properties and hiding details of a lavish weeklong golf trip he took with Abramoff to Scotland and London in the summer of 2002. The following October, Safavian was sentenced to 18 months in prison, but he remained free on appeal and his conviction was overturned some 18 months later after his attorneys argued that the charges did not meet the legal standard for conviction and that U.S. District Judge Paul L. Friedman improperly admitted e-mails ... Source: news.sympatico.msn.ca --- 1 day ago

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House on Friday disputed an assertion in a new book by Bob Woodward that President Bush was slow to react to escalating attacks in Iraq, forcefully arguing that Bush's military buildup was responsible for a sharp drop in the violence. In a sharply worded, two-page statement, National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley pushed back on other revelations in the book, but did not address Woodward's assertion that the Bush administration spied extensively on Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and others in the Iraqi government. ... Excerpts from investigative journalist Bob Woodward’s new book, “The War Within: A Secret White House History, 2006-2008,” reveal that the White House has conducted an “extensive spying operation” on Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, supposedly one of the Bush administration’s strongest allies. Vehicles drive on the Parks Highway through Wasilla, Alaska, Friday Aug. 29, 2008. On Friday, Republican presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., chose Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a first-term governor and a former mayor of Wasilla, Alaska as his running mate. (AP Photo/Al Grillo) MCCAIN SUPPORTER EXPLODING HEAD ALERT! McCain lovers, do not read. I'm serious. Don't read it. OK, I warned ya... A local pol passed along this blog about Gov. Palin. Enjoy. If you want the Cliff's Note version, it essentially is this: In an election where the experience of Barack Obama has been endlessly questioned, what in the world is John McCain doing nominating a woman who two years ago was mayor of Wasilla? My view: He has none. I'm not dismissing Wasilla, by the way. In fact, the photo in this blog makes it look an awful lot like back home. (Sniff. I think I'm getting homesick.) But the McCainites are the ones who raised the question about experience, so now they ought to answer it. If the mayor of Wasilla is qualified to be VP or even president, how about the mayor of Burton? He's been on the job a lot longer, and Burton's a... ... Source: www.azstarnet.com --- 3 days ago
