Unspoilt Amazonian rainforests covering an area almost as large as Texas have been provisionally earmarked for oil and gas exploration. A new report reveals that the area has been divided into 180 "blocks" designated for exploration by governments of countries that own the land on the western fringe of the Amazon. Their intention is to lease the blocks to oil and gas companies for exploration and extraction, taking a cut of any revenues as a royalty. About 35 oil companies are vying for the contracts. More information here. Read the comments on this post... ...

The NYT reports that the FDIC is hiring back retirees to help it cope with the sudden increase in bank failures resulting from the housing crash. At one point the article tells readers: "Few expect the scale of the current crisis to approach that of the 1980s debacle [the S&L crisis], in which 2,000 banks and savings and loans were eventually closed." It is worth noting that almost no economists anticipated any crisis at all even a year ago. Given their complete failure to see the housing and mortgage crisis coming, their projections of its severity are likely to be of relatively little value. The actual number of bank failures is likely to be far lower than in the 80s, but this is largely because the crisis of the 80s led to a huge consolidation within the industry, with many small banks closing or merging with other banks. This time around, the banks that fail will be much larger (one of the failures to date IndyMac, was the second largest bank failure in U.S. history), and the value of deposits in failed institutions is likely to be comparable (measured as a share of GDP) to what we saw with the S&L crisis. --Dean Baker ...

UEFA's shortlist for this year's European Club Player of the Year has been published and there are few changes to the Usual players from the Premier League. Besides the Usual Suspects such as Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, John Terry, Cristiano Ronaldo and the rest little has changed, although Fernando Torres has unsurprisingly found his way there too. Football fans across the continent were puzzled by the absence of Robbie Savage, Lee Bowyer and Titus Bramble. ...

JPMorgan and HSBC are obviously huge individual players in the gold and silver markets and that includes the COMEX. The Call Reports prove, I believe, without a shadow of a doubt that these two U.S. banks constitute a significant portion, and probably the outright majority, of commercial short positions (both gross and net) in COMEX gold and silver futures. That might get the conspiracy-minded among us to start hootin’ and hollerin’, but I do want to point out that JPMorgan and HSBC have a much larger book of forward gold and silver contracts than they do COMEX gold and silver contracts. As a result, it is impossible to conclude with any degree of certainty that the COMEX gold and silver short positions are not in fact hedges of forward gold and silver long positions. ...

Carl Edwards won the Sharpie 500 in 2007; will he do it again this Saturday night, or will he backflip into the agony of defeat?  (Photo: Getty Images) BRISTOL, Tenn. - Seven consecutive races have been won by three drivers: Kyle Busch 4, Carl Edwards 2, Jimmie Johnson 1. That's as coherent a set of information entering the final three races of the Sprint Cup Series' regular season as any. Anything can happen in the Chase, but it's probably fair to say that the favorites for the championship come from those three. Busch is the season's biggest winner. Edwards as fewer victories but more consistency. Johnson has won the past two championships. Of the three, only Johnson has never won at Bristol Motor Speedway, site of Saturday night's Sharpie 500. Edwards is the defending champion. "I think we are there. I think we are close. I think we are competitive," said Johnson. "We still need a little bit more speed to be in our comfort zone of what we want, but we have made a lot of progress over the summer. "Certain tracks fit certain drivers and also crew chiefs and setups, as well. This place has been one of the toughest for me to sort out. ...
