I didn’t know much about the Japanese-imported “ Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers ” when it was announced Last week, but I knew that it had bikinis and zombies in it. In other words, I had to see it. Alongside demos for kid-friendly titles like “ Ben 10 ” and “ Naruto ,” I entered a private booth within D3Publishers ’s E3 meeting room through beaded curtains. It kind of felt like I was entering the adult section at a video store (not that I’ve ever been). However, fans of zombies and girls who kick butt should take note… The Wii debut of the popular, third-person hack-and-slash series in Japan, “Bikini Zombie Slayers” is the story of bikini-donning Samurai sisters named Aya and Saki on a quest to find out about their ancestors and the cause of the zombie outbreak. Players can take the role of Aya or Saki in the single-player or local co-op freeplay game (Aya’s the cowgirl and Saki’s the sailor), as they slash, swing and thrust their way through hordes of the undead. For the demo, I watched D3 localization manager Alex Coward slice and dice zombies as Aya, splattering pink blood across the screen, the ground and herself. If pink isn’t your fancy, the blood has three other color options, including green, white and good ol’ red. The controls are pretty straightforward: The analog stick moves the character, and you swing the Wiimote side-to-side or up and down to fight. You can also thrust the Wiimote forward to impale enemies. As z ...

2009 is going to be a big year for Afro Samurai as he not only returns in a full length animated film, but also a new game from Namco Bandai! If you missed it, yesterday (following a panel discussion with the ultimate bad ass Samuel L. Jackson) saw the debut of the Afro Samurai: Ressurrection trailer at the San Diego Comic-con. That same teaser-trailer was aired Last night on Spike TV. Afro Samurai: Ressurection seems to have all the ingredients that made the original series such a hit:  the return of Samuel Jackson as the ‘fro-touting anti-hero, the RZA is once again offering his interesting mix of hip-hop with traditional Japanese (and Chinese) music queues, and GONZO (the studio behind such hits as Blue Submarine #6 and Samurai 7) is once again animating the feature length film. Interesting new additions to the cast include Lucy Lui and Mark “Luke Skywalker” Hamill, both are no strangers to voice work! You can read the official press release by clicking here . Hit read more for the official trailer, and some goodies about the game (including the new trailer)! The Afro Samurai: Ressurection Trailer! Afro Samurai | Animation & Cartoons | SPIKE.com In addition to getting a full length film, Namco Bandai is also offering up a game adaptation of the hit series. Spike has recently put up the 2008 E3 trailer for the Afro Samurai Game that you can check out below. Everything about this trailer has me drooling in anticipation, the char ...

Filed under: Culture , PC , Sony PlayStation 3 , Microsoft Xbox 360 Fallout 3 developer Bethesda announced via press release that it is hosting (alongside American Cinematheque and Geek Monthly) a post-apocalyptic film festival in honor of the upcoming game. The two-night even starts Friday, August 22 at Aero Theater in Santa Monica, CA. Three films will be shown each night. For Friday, August 22: Wizards, Damnation Alley, A Boy and His Dog. For Saturday, August 23 (The Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, Twelve Monkeys), both nights starting at 7:00 pm. We think they're missing a few good choices -- namely, Six String Samurai, Mad Max and The Adventures of Pluto Nash. The real kicker is a "special Fallout 3 giveaway" for every attendee. We're expecting a poster or tote bag, but who knows? Maybe Bethesda is offering free Rad Away for all. Tickets go on sale July 25. Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

Rent It After wowing the art house circuit with such festival favorites as "After Life" and "Nobody Knows," writer/director Hirokazu Koreeda makes an abrupt turn with "Hana yori mo naho," released Stateside simply as "Hana" (and given the subtitle "The Tale of a Reluctant Samurai" for the new DVD cover). The film, a period piece set in feudal Japan, is a far cry from the modern dramas we're used to seeing from him, but while its production design looks splendid, "Hana" suffers from a sluggish pace that drags the simple story beyond its welcome. Soza (Okada Junichi) is a Samurai on a mission: he's spent the Last three years tracking down the man who killed his father. But Soza is a lousy Samurai, terrible with a sword and worse with hand-to-hand combat, although that's just fine with him, since he hates violence and finds the concept of revenge to be a waste of one's life. And so we pick up the story as ... Read the entire review ...

So I picked this game up as it was extraordinarily cheap. This was no coincidence, and was in fact a portent of the quality of the game. I enjoy a simple beat-em-up. I like the God of War series. I thoroughly enjoyed most of Conan on the 360 until it got stupidly hard.  I enjoy a spot of Dynasty/Samurai/Whatever Warriors. I even found Ninety-Nine Nights playable for a week or two. So in that sense, I was prepared to give Beowulf a go. I mean, I spent more on dinner Last night than on this game. So it’s not like it was a full-priced bad choice. So anyway. It looks decent in spots, though at the same time it also looks so very unpolished. There are some nice water effects. Actually, there are some really poor water effects as well. The controls are poor in pretty much every way. They just feel unresponsive. Moving, running, climbing, fighting. All poor. Speaking of fighting, combat is awful. A mix of unresponsive combat and God of War-styled giant-monster-boss-fights. Except, again, awful. [ read more ] ...

Filed under: News , Xbox Live Arcade You know, ever since Microsoft released DOOM in the middle of X06, we've become used to the idea that we should expect some killer games during big events. Last year's E3 gave us Golden Axe and Sonic the Hedgehog . During GDC this year, Microsoft released demos of XNA Community Games , including the highly anticipated XBLA release Dishwasher: Dead Samurai . Naturally, we were really fired up to see what would happen during E3 next week. So, what are we getting? Coffeetime Crosswords . Yes, SRSLY. Other than that, there will be free Buku Sudoku DLC and Puzzle Quest is joining Arcade Hits at the reduced price of 800 MS Points (a 400 point cut). Barring any surprises, it's looking like the tradition has been broken. Gallery: Coffeetime Crosswords (XBLA)   Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments ...

Last week, I made mention here of Kurosawa and his Seven Samurai. Now I just have to say that this is a film that should be viewed by teams in preseason. Although the distance between Soldier Field and the Tokyo Dome is almost 8,000 miles, and residents here prefer sashimi and yakitori to Vienna beef and Chicago-style pizza, there is a familiar theme that connects the two metropolitan areas: corruption. Beachwood readers are familiar with the monopoly the Daley family has had on Chicago politics - and political scandals - over the past 60 years. In Tokyo, city scandals are also rampant, but the nature of the Tokyo scandal is slightly different. Call it the Tokyo Way. Chicago underwent major political and industrial changes in the early 20th century and transformed itself into modern metropolis. Politicians aligned themselves ethnically, and eventually Daley the First emerged out of Bridgeport as the political top-dog. He was no stranger to scandal. Japan underwent a dramatic transformation at the end of the 19th century. Called the Meiji Restoration, it was during this time when the Last of the Samurai surrendered their power back to the emperor (famously and inaccurately reenacted in the Tom Cruise film The Last Samurai ). This period also was the start of the movement of Japanese society from feudalism to imperialism and began the modern Japanese capitalist economic push. After World War II, power shifted from an imperial government to political organizations. Public government scandal followed shortly thereafter. In Chicago, city government-related scandals are not uncommon. For ...

Here’s a toast to great expectations. Ethan Hawke has married pregnant girlfriend Ryan Shawhughes., the actor’s publicist confirms to E! News. The duo swapped vows in June in New York. No further details were divulged. The couple were spotted Last month applying for a marriage license at the Municipal Building on Centre Street. Hawke first met Shawhughes when he and his first wife, Uma Thurman, hired her to be their nanny. Which didn’t turn out quite as seedily as it sounds. The duo reportedly did not start seeing each other until after Hawke’s split from Thurman was finalized in 2005. Thurman filed for divorce in 2003 amid rumors of her hubby’s infidelity, although he has attributed their breakup to a multitude of other problems. He and Shawhughes announced their expectant status in January. It will be the third child for the actor; he has two children—daughter Maya Ray, 10, and son Levon Roan, 6—with Thurman. Hawke said in 2006 that his kids provide “the greatest pleasure in my life. [Being a dad] is the only role that, if I fail, I will consider my life a failure.” The Before Sunrise thesp most recently starred in the critically acclaimed thriller Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead and is busy shooting the cop drama Brooklyn’s Finest, but there was a time he may have felt a little box office envy when it came to his ex-wife’s Samurai-sword-wielding success. “It’s unfair when one person’s career is taking off, and the other is r ...
