The question is not if you have seen The Dark Knight already, Batman Begins’ sequel, which grossed over $400 million in less than three week, but how many times have you seen it so far? In case you are a Batman fan you might want to treat yourself with this XBox 360 special edition with The Dark Knight logos all over the black case. We don’t know how many similar units are out there and how much one costs, but hopefully more are going to be manufactured. I simply know a couple of guys that would certainly get one for themselves. The more I think about this, the less I think that the film is a defense of shady governmental policies justified in the name of fighting evil. From my perspective, the film is sympathetic to Batman’s decisions, but ultimately argues that his choices remain not only wrong, but fruitless and even destructive. And this, I think, accounts for the broad appeal of The Dark Knight : it is complex, as I noted in my review, yet still remains balanced. It can see our pragmatically-fueled political reality for what it is—without having to come down squarely on one rhetorical side or the other, allowing plenty of room for an audience (and individuals) to react, to think, and to reflect. Such room for thought exceeds whatever biased clap-trap our other sources of political commentary are offering these days. In an election year when major media outlets are turning news into mere entertainment and talking-head blather, mere Hollywood entertainment is offering up one of most meaty analyses of “what interests us and frightens us” that we’ve yet seen. ...

"The Dark Knight" delivers. For once, a movie has not only lived up to the enormous hype, but it soars far beyond the realm of expectations. This film is outstanding in every way. Every actor delivers a fantastic performance, and I won't even bother getting into how outstanding Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker was because I'm sure you've all heard it. ...

"The Dark Knight”? Little movie, might have heard of it. Maybe even seen it … five times already. It sure seems as if there’s no box-office record this “Batman Begins” sequel — which already has blown by most of its projections of popularity — hasn’t shattered or won’t shatter. It has the highest-ever opening day and opening weekend. It’s 2008’s top-grossing movie after just 13 days in release. It’s the highest-grossing Batman movie ever. It’s the fastest movie to reach $100 million, $150 million, $200 million, $250 million and $300 million. It has the highest total ever for any film after just 10 days in release, besting “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” at that same point by $55 million. It also boasts the highest-ever total for a non-holiday-weekend Monday and the highest-ever total for a film in which a tractor-trailer flips end-over-end in downtown Chicago. (Equally silly, yes, but one of them is an actual measurement of box-office glory.) While it’s great to see a blockbuster as exciting as it is thought-provoking be so successful, people are getting a bit carried away with where they perceive its ceiling to be. Some of them will argue there’s no ceiling. As of Tuesday, “The Dark Knight” had grossed $324 million — a scant $76 million away from the $400-million club, which includes only seven films. “The Dark Knight” easily will hit that, expected to take in about another $35 to $40 million alone this weekend. (That sa ...

The "Dark Knight" phenomenon continues to have a ripple effect on a wide range of stocks. While IMAX (IMAX) was a favorite among speculators , FBR has found a less obvious beneficiary: Hot Topic (HOTT): While we do not believe the company is likely to comp positively in retail July (we are at a -4% for July), w e do believe the company is likely benefiting from The Dark Knight phenomenon, which may help to drive HOTT's movie-licensed merchandise. FBR, luckily for HOTT, does also see other reasons to be positive on the stock: From an apparel perspective, we also believe it is likely that the company is driving good sales in its colored and skinny leg denim. We continue to believe that risk/reward remains extremely attractive from current levels. This is clearly a deep value and highly speculative play on the shares, and we recommend that investors with such an appetite should be involved in HOTT. We further believe that margins will expand over the next year and that the share price will appreciate accordingly. FBR maintains OUTPERFORM on Hot Topic (HOTT), target $8. *Casting riddles kick off* With Batman behemoth The Dark Knight pleasing audiences and critics alike, it's time for some rabid speculation about the casting of the next film in the rebooted franchise. The Sun froths this morning that the incandescent Johnny Depp is in line to play the Riddler, the bodystockinged bastard last played by Jim Carrey in Batman Forever. Even more memorable than the spectacle of 250,000 Berliners chanting his name at the Siegessäule or the perfect 3-point jumper he unleashed before hundreds of adoring U.S. troops in Kuwait were these Rambo -like scenes of President-in-waiting Barack Obama and his Kevlar-bedecked entourage being ferried around Iraq aboard a fleet of tiltrotor, Transformers -esque U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 Ospreys .
