I was lucky enough to attend the T-Mobile G1 product announcement in New York a couple of weeks ago and actually pre-ordered my own G1 that day on the train back to the airport for my flight home and it turns out it was a good thing I did. I read reports earlier this week that T-Mobile may have sold out of the G1 and just received confirmation and more details from my T-Mobile representative. T-Mobile did indeed sell out of the original stock even after nearly tripling the number of phones available for initial delivery. ... Source: blogs.pcworld.com --- 2 days ago

From the Houston Chronicle: Within two to five years, you could send a Text message to 911. Or transmit photos of a purse-snatcher caught in the act or photos of an accident. It's part of Next Generation 911, and emergency districts in the Houston area are gearing up. Pilot programs in Denton and Tarrant counties are planned in the next few years. Ideally, you could use any communication device from anywhere to reach 911. "We're all excited," said Sharon Counterman, deputy director of the Greater Harris County 911 Emergency Network, which includes Fort Bend County. "It's something that will increase what we do for the public and serve them much better. Many younger people believe they can do a Text message today to 911, and they cannot." I can see some situations where Text Messaging to 911 would be preferable to a regular phone call (say, a kidnapping or robbery where you don't want the perp to hear you talking), but this new effort sounds like it's being done more for the sake of convenience than actual crime-solving. Is making a phone call really that difficult? And wouldn't a phone call actually be preferable, since the operator can ask questions and tell from the caller's voice how dire the situation is? And while it would be pretty cool to be able to send photos or videos of a crime in progress to the cops, I can just imagine the lawsuit from the family of the first bystander killed while trying to YouTube a bank robbery. ... It's no surprise that some things may be getting more expensive these days, especially as companies start dealing with the fallout from the financial crisis -- but it appears that some are going a bit overboard. There's a bit of an uproar among some, as Verizon Wireless is slapping a surprising 3-cents-per-Text-message fee on top of every mobile terminated Text message . That basically affects any company that provides some sort of SMS notification system or content service, massively increasing prices. As some have noted, most of those services bought Text messages in bulk, where it cost around 1 cent per message . That means the cost of sending Text messages just quadrupled. If you're already worried about the economy and working on tight margins, that could certainly put some companies out of business entirely. Permalink | Comments | Email This Story ... Earlier this week, we learned that AT&T is discontinuing their $20 unlimited MEdiaNet option for Pay As You Go plans . This was a huge draw, since it was the best prepaid data option on the market. Word is that Pick Your Plan subscribers will still have the option, though Cell Guru claims that Pick Your Plan users will lose the $20 Text and data bundles. I’ve yet to see corroboration for that, so take it with a grain of salt. The worst news, though comes from Howard Forum , where a user shares that AT&T is upping per-use Text Messaging to 20 cents each. In other words, it’s time to shut off Text Messaging if you don’t have a bundle. a AT&T Go Phone hiking Text Messaging to 20 cents ... Source: www.artsjournal.com --- 9 days ago
