One of the arguments most frequently offered for the creation of Ten Commandments plaques, monuments, or displays on government property is that they are the foundation of American (or Western) law. Having the Ten Commandments displayed is thus supposed to be a way of acknowledging the roots of our laws and our government. But is this really valid? ...

A long legal fight over courthouse displays of the Ten Commandments could cost two Southern Kentucky counties nearly $400,000. In a motion filed this week, attorneys with the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky requested fees of $390,588 for representing people who challenged the displays in the halls of the Pulaski and McCreary County courthouses, plus $8,133 in expenses. The request comes after the ACLU won its request for an injunction barring the displays. Congress approved rules decades ago under which the losers in civil-rights cases must pay the legal fees of the winners. The goal was to make it possible for citizens and attorneys to pursue potentially expensive lawsuits to defend civil rights and uphold constitutional principles when government doesn't do the right thing, said David A. Friedman, the lead attorney for the ACLU on the case. ...

In this time of failing corporate giants, it feels appropriate to review a slim cautionary book called The Ten Commandments for Business Failure , written by the President of a company who has survived quite well so far. Donald Keough was former president of the Coca-Cola Company, and provides us an invaluable how-not-to guide, bolstered by a foreword by Warren Buffett, and reccomendations from the likes of Bill Gates, Rupert Murdoch, and Jack Welch. As Warren Buffett puts it in the foreword, Mr. Keough is a human personification of the Coca-Cola Company, in all its multi-dimensionality, and has an ability to 'cut to the chase on an issue' and keeps his prescriptions simple, grounded in deep experience, and it is interesting to see how many of the dicta in this book were ignored or outright flouted by recent large failed corporations. The very first commandment, 'top of the list' as it were, is 'Quit Taking Risks'. This might seem obvious, but as the examples of Xerox and many other giants shows, often enough, the companies that get complacent and believe themselves to be secure in their business model, stop trying to rock the boat, take risks, and bet the farm on the anti-thesis of their core ideas. This was illustrated efectively by Clayton Christansen in The Innovator's Dilemma , and more recently we have seen all the Indian IT Service majors continue to propagate their low-cost services model, venturing only marginally into altern ...

In a recent article, I suggested that we needed to dust off the 10 Commandments as a nation if we wanted peace in perilous times. In response, someone wrote me to say we don't need to go by the 10 Commandments anymore. I've heard this before -- that Jesus came and fulfilled the law and so He tossed the 10 Commandments into the Dead Sea. While the full law of Moses with its rituals and legalism was done away, the basic principles of morality which Jesus summarized as "Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and thy neighbor as thyself" (Matthew 22:36-40) are still of great worth to us as a society. Many of our problems can be traced back to abandoning them. When people tell me we don't want to go back to "the law," it just tells me they haven't read these in a while. So, I'd like to dust off these tablets a bit for a clearer view. When we're done, you tell me whether we'd be happier or more miserable if we followed them. (These are in Exodus 20 if you'd care to follow along.)Part 1: Love the Lord Thy God1) Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 2) Thou shalt not make any graven images.3) Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.I can't believe any Christian would argue that we don't need to observe these anymore. Do we really believe we should create golden idols and worship them instead of God? Do we really believe we'll have a closer relationship with our Savior if He's number 3 on our priority list behind our high ...

If Moses were on the internet IN THESE times of turmoil, with stock markets and house prices plummeting, plenty of otherwise god-less people may be saying a prayer now and then. Some may even choose to share their prayers with others. Before doing so online, though, it may be helpful for those with a Christian bent to review the Ten Commandments of Godblogging, as outlined at a recent Godblogging conference in London.1 You shall not put your blog before your integrity 2 You shall not make an idol of your blog 3 You shall not misuse your screen name by using your anonymity to sin 4 Remember the Sabbath day by taking one day off a week from your blog 5 Honour your fellow-bloggers above yourselves and do not give undue ...

by Michelle Lentz I had no idea that blogging was now taken so seriously by churches. # Know who is boss. You are in business to service customer needs, and you can only do that if you know what it is your customers want. When you truly listen to your customers, they let you know what they want and how you can provide good service. Never forget that the customer pays our salary and makes your job possible. # Be a good listener. Take the time to identify customer needs by asking questions and concentrating on what the customer is really saying. Listen to their words, tone of voice, body language, and most importantly, how they feel. Beware of making assumptions - thinking you intuitively know what the customer wants. Do you know what three things are most important to your customer? Effective listening and undivided attention are particularly important on the show floor where there is a great danger of preoccupation - looking around to see to whom else we could be selling to. # Identify and anticipate needs. Customers don't buy products or services. They buy good feelings and solutions to problems. Most customer needs are emotional rather than logical. The more you know your customers, the better you become at anticipating their needs. Communicate regularly so that you are aware of problems or upcoming needs. # Make customers feel important and appreciated. Treat them as individuals. Always use their name and find ways to compliment them, but be sincere. People value sincerity. It creates good feeling and trust. Think ab ...
