France Télécom yesterday abandoned its €27bn (£21bn) bid for Nordic rival TeliaSonera and, with it, the prospect of leading Europe's biggest telecoms group. The French operator walked away after the TeliaSonera board and its biggest shareholder, the Swedish government, demanded a higher price. The decision leaves TeliaSonera exposed, with its shares down 13% at 43.50 Swedish kronor (£3.65) - well below the indicative Skr56 French offer. It is understood that the Nordic operator's board and the Swedish government, which owns 37.3%, were seeking a bid above Skr60 but the French ruled this out because it would have put at risk its debt-to-earnings ratio target - though it had offered to marginally "tweak" the cash element of its share-and-cash offer. France Télécom could instead return cash to its own shareholders who saw their stock rise 7% on the news. Sweden's financial markets minister, Mats Odell, insisted his government would press ahead with reducing its stake as part of a privatisation programme. Odell said: "TeliaSonera is the only big telecoms firm for sale. There are other interested parties and I am completely convinced TeliaSonera will be able to play a part in consolidation." The Nordic operator's board said the French offer, "substantially undervalues the company". Industry sources said TeliaSonera investors had shown substantial interest in the French offer but the board and government had dug their heels in. ... Source: www.ft.com --- 50 days ago

Just as we reported earlier this week, France Telecom-TeliaSonera saga is now officially over. Stockholm-based telecoms group TeliaSonera has reported that its consolidated net profit in the quarter ended 30 June 2008 rose by 7.8% year-on-year to SEK4.13 billion (USD685 million), from SEK3.83 billion a year earlier, on total revenues that climbed 5.7% on an annual basis to SEK25.27 billion. EBITDA in the second quarter (excluding one-off items) increased by 6.1% to SEK7.98 billion, widening the EBITDA margin slightly to 31.6% from 31.4% in Q2 2007. TeliaSonera’s growth in the most recent quarter was heavily driven by mobile operations in Russia, Turkey and its Eurasia division. The Swedish former wireline monopoly’s CEO Lars Nyberg said that reducing expenses is imperative to the company’s strategy going forward to offset the slowdown in its domestic growth and a general decline in fixed line services. Since Mr Nyberg took up his post in September 2007, the group has announced 2,900 job cuts. He added in a statement: ‘The overall market trends were essentially unchanged and we reported a satisfactory set of numbers for the second quarter...For the first time in more than a year, we managed to increase our margins.’ ... TeliaSonera said it expects stable growth for the remainder of 2008 after posting a 5.7 percent increase in sales for the second quarter and revenues of $1.3 billion, up some 6 percent from a year ago. The Nordic telco—which spurned an attempted takeover earlier this year by France Telecom—said margins for broadband services in Sweden were under pressure, hurt by the growth of mobile broadband services. CEO Lars Nyberg told Swedish radio news that he backed the board's earlier decision to reject a bid from France Telecom. "I am glad that we can continue to grow on our own," Nyberg said. TeliaSonera and its associated companies had some 122.9 million customers in the quarter, up 19.3 per cent from the end of the second quarter 2007.
