Mark Teixeira was so stoked about his first trip to the postseason, he sought out advice from some of his October-tested teammates on the Los Angeles Angels. Wondering how to best channel his emotions in the right direction, he asked center fielder Torii Hunter. "The first thing Torii said was that you don't need to drink coffee in the morning on the day of a playoff game," Teixeira said with a... ...

Severna Park's Mark Teixeira reached base four times, scored three times and drove in the tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly to keep the Angels alive after they fell behind the Red Sox by four in the first inning. But the Red Sox returned to Boston in complete control of the best-of-five series because the Angels squeezed the absolute minimum out of a string of promising opportunities. The Red Sox have been in complete control of the Angels for some time now. The 7-5 victory, made possible by J.D. Drew's two-run homer off Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth inning, was their major league record 11th straight postseason victory over the Angels. They'll hand the ball to Josh Beckett on Sunday with a chance to make very short work of this series against the team with baseball's best regular season record. The winningest team from each league is on life support. The Cubs will try to keep their season alive tonight, when Rich Harden takes the mound against Hiroki Kuroda at Dodger Stadium. Both teams are inadvertantly making the argument that it isn't necessarily so good to lock up your division early. The Angels, in particular, didn't play a truly meaningful game in the second half of the season. ... Source: weblogs.baltimoresun.com --- 5 days ago
I studied everyone’s responses to Tuesday’s question about the Least Valuable Oriole . And I came to this conclusion: Boy were there some bad performances in 2008. One guy who was barely mentioned -- free drink chips for Stanhouse and Ken F. -- was Luis Hernandez. The bar was so low for Hernandez that all he had to do was play good defense and the Orioles would have allowed his wet-newspaper bat to stay in the starting lineup. And his defense completely abandoned him. He went from starting big-league shortstop to potentially never playing in the bigs again. I have to give him the LVO, because he really didn’t have to do much and he failed. Now, as for most disappointing Oriole, I think Adam Loewen edges Daniel Cabrera and Jamie Walker by a bad elbow. Loewen entered the season as the Great Canadian Hope for the rotation and, because of injury, will never pitch again. Cabrera may not pitch again for the Orioles and Walker was awful this year, but Loewen is in a sad class by himself. Here’s hoping he somehow can resurface as a hitter. He’s a really bright, nice guy and it’s easy to pull for him. But the guess is his big-league baseball career is over. OK, today let’s talk priorities. Obviously, the Orioles have a lot to do this offseason. They have a lot of holes to fill. They need pitching more than anything else. There’s been hints coming out of the Warehouse that they will make a run at both A.J. Burnett, who lives in Monkton, an ... Source: www.projo.com --- 2 days ago

Angels 5, Tigers 4: Mark Teixeira's ninth-inning sacrifice fly gave Los Angeles the win at Detroit. Torii Hunter drove in three run for the Angels, reducing their magic number to clinch the AL West to eight. Miguel Cabrera hit his third home run in three days and drove in three runs for Detroit, which has lost seven of nine. Yankees 7, Rays 2: Mike Mussina earned his 17th win, and New York got home runs from Alex Rodriguez and Xavier Nady. Joba Chamberlain came off the disabled list for New York and pitched 11⁄3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Indians 9, White Sox 3: Victor Martinez hit his first home run in nearly a year to help Cleveland win at home. The White Sox remained tied with Minnesota for the AL Central lead despite losing for the fifth time in six games. Blue Jays 7, Twins 5: Jose Bautista and Alex Rios both had four hits and hit back-to-back homers at Toronto. Lyle Overbay also homered for the Blue Jays, who had 17 hits in winning their third straight game. ... Source: www.bradenton.com --- 33 days ago
