Planned Parenthood Expands its Reach : "Flush with cash, Planned Parenthood affiliates nationwide are aggressively expanding their reach, seeking to woo more affluent patients with a network of suburban clinics and huge new health centers that project a decidedly upscale image," reports the Wall Street Journal . Unfortunately the full story is available to subscribers only, but the WSJ health blog has a summary that includes these remarks: Despite some critiques to the contrary, Planned Parenthood insists it’s not compromising is long-held focus on serving the poor with birth control, sexual-health care and abortions. Officials there say they take a loss of nearly $1 on each packet of birth-control pills distributed to poor women under a federal program that funds reproductive care. But they make a profit of nearly $22 on each month of pills sold to an adult who can afford to pay full price. That money helps subsidize other operations, including care for the poor as well as pursuing Planned Parenthood’s political agenda. “It is high time we follow the population,” said Sarah Stoesz, who heads Planned Parenthood operations in three Midwest states. She recently opened three express centers in wealthy Minnesota suburbs, “in shopping centers and malls, places where women are already doing their grocery shopping, picking up their Starbucks, living their daily lives,” she said. Children having children is not nearly so exciting as stories about children having children. So while everyone was arguing over whether teens in a Massachusetts high school made a “Pact” to get pregnant, few talked about what life has in store for them and their children. There was little discussion on what young men and women are learning about their bodies and their choices. In North Carolina, after a 13-year decline in the Teen Pregnancy rates that resulted in the lowest-ever in 2003, the number has held steady, with 2006 state rates nearly the same as those over the previous three years. The figures, released and pored over by the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coalition of North Carolina, are from the State Center for Health Statistics. North Carolina still has one of the higher Teen Pregnancy rates in the nation. In 2006, North Carolina's rate was 63.1 pregnancies per 1,000 girls ages 15-19, according to state center. Behind the numbers are children who turn to babies as the answer for loneliness. They will yearn to be left alone when days and evenings are filled with diaper changes and colicky cries. It's also a matter of money, of course, dollars spent on the care of teens who drop out of school and have trouble getting back on track, and their children, who have a greater chance of growing into troubled young people. The high school where the principal claimed girls formed a Pact to get pregnant is one of the few in Massachusetts with a day care center, leading some to wonder whether that sent a message that Teen motherhood is OK. Christopher Farmer, superintendent of the Gloucester school system, said the district would look into whether its day care center, which opened in 1996, somehow contributed to the spike in Teen pregnancies from about four a year to 17 this school year. "Clearly people are saying that it's possible that the presence of the day care center may encourage teenage Pregnancy," Farmer said. "Since people have raised the question, clearly it would be wise for us to address the question." A furor erupted in Gloucester last month after the principal, Joseph Sullivan, told Time magazine that several of the girls had set out to get pregnant and raise their babies together. Farmer and the city's mayor denied any Pact existed, but officials have started an extensive study of Teen Pregnancy in Gloucester, including a review of the city's sex education programs. ...

On Thursday, the BBC was at Crunchy Granola Baby at Washington Street filming segments of a new documentary that will focus on Teen Pregnancy. Amy Tetreault, a store employee who has been in touch with filming crews, said BBC reporters stopped off at the Salem store, which sells organic children’s products clothing, as one part of a tour of North Shore towns where they’re talking to locals about their reactions to the Gloucester High School Teen Pregnancy debacle. “[The Pregnancy Pact] is the nugget of the story,” she said. “The documentary will explore how the story exploded on the scene and what people thought of that.” The incident — where 17 teens allegedly made a Pact to get pregnant and help each other raise their babies — apparently provided the BBC with a launching-off point for the documentary, which focuses on the long-term effects of Teen Pregnancy on the lives of children. Concerned citizens and a few news crews packed into City Hall’s Kyrouz Auditorium Wednesday night to listen in as the School Committee took advice from experts in the field about how to move forward with tackling the issue of Teen Pregnancy. The meeting grew out of concerns over recent revelations that 17 Gloucester High School girls were pregnant this school year and the explosion of international publicity surrounding a Time magazine story that claimed the girls had formed some sort of Pact to be pregnant at the same time. Effective at the end of the 2007-08 school year, Student Health Center Medical Director Brian Orr and Nurse Practitioner Kim Daly resigned from the center, citing a lack of support from health center licensee Addison Gilbert Hospital in providing confidential contraceptives to students. With a spike in student pregnancies from the previous year, Orr and Daly wanted the students to have more resources available to them. The School Committee, with the authority to make policy decisions regarding what is offered at the health center, is now considering their options and whether to introduce new programs, and what those programs might be, to the schools. The committee decided to call in the experts. Dr. Lauren Smith, medical director for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, pointed out at Wednesday’s meeting that the Teen Pregnancy rate in Gloucester is actually down by more than 44 percent in the last ...
