Sometimes, political conventions make for strange bedfellows. Case in point: at 2:38 a.m. on Sunday, police in Aurora, a suburb of Denver, made what they believed to be a routine traffic stop. In the car: methamphetamine—and two Rifles (one of which was apparently a "sniper rifle.") Not so routine. According to CBS4 News , the first arrest led the authorities, who believed they had stumbled upon an "assassination plot," to a second man staying at a nearby hotel. When they knocked on the man's door, he reportedly "jumped out of his sixth-floor window, land[ed] on an awning and [ran] from the scene." When the cops found him nearby with a broken ankle, they arrested him, too. According CBS4, "one of the officers who was briefed says he was told at least one of the suspects made statements to that effect" that the pair was planning to assassinate Democratic nominee Barack Obama. The rookie local entry in the Central Illinois Collegiate League starts the CICL playoffs tonight as the most successful local baseball Team — on and off the field — in 15 years. The Sliders’ average regular-season attendance, 1,662 per game for 24 home games, is virtually the same as the average crowd at games played by the Springfield Cardinals Class A Team back in 1993. And the Sliders’ attendance totals far surpass the minuscule “crowds” — 30 to 50 people — that attended games played by the city’s previous CICL Team, the Springfield Rifles. “Bringing entertainment and baseball back together back to Springfield, I think that’s the key to success,” co-owner Jesse Bolder said Monday. “We came down, and No. 1, we looked at the Springfield market and saw that this was a city that had minor league and similar-type baseball over the years and had supported it,” he said. “We said, ‘What’s going on here?
