by Jake Appleman I was going to write a short story about Tayshaun Prince being captured and taken into a cave to be initiated by the Skin and Bones society–Mick Jagger, Calista Flockhart, Snoop Dogg, the cast of America’s Next Top Model, the Olsen twins, etc. He was going to be praised for his all around selflessness (if shots were food…), and the ceremony was going to ... Most successful teams still build around a star trio, though. Last year, Boston sipped champagne because of Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce. San Antonio has won three NBA Titles behind Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker. Still, with the league becoming increasingly competitive, a new four-star model is starting to emerge ... ...

Pistons forward Antonio McDyess could only grin and laugh. Asked if he was surprised that the core of Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace, Tayshaun Prince and himself remained intact on the eve of training camp, all McDyess could say was: "I'm surprised, yeah. I'm definitely surprised at that. ...

It wasn't exactly expected, but it wasn't surprising to the Pistons. The showstopper at the team's public scrimmage Thursday night at Oakland University was Walter Herrmann. While we still have a hard time seeing how the 6-foot-9 small forward from Argentina can get much playing time behind Tayshaun Prince and with coach Michael Curry's plan to give Rip Hamilton some run at the 3, the crowd got to witness a great shooting display. Guarded mostly by rookie Walter Sharpe, Herrmann knocked down open jumper after open jumper. "Lighting it up!" Rasheed Wallace exclaimed. "Herm did good. That's the best I've seen Herm shoot since he's been here." ...

Filed under: Pistons FanHouse's Tom Ziller argues his ranking of the top 50 players in the NBA . Rasheed Wallace is not underrated (whatever that means) -- he actually pulled as many MVP votes (one) as Paul Pierce last season. But 'Sheed is vastly misunderstood. We think of 'Sheed's baseline jumper, his three-ball ... his barking at the refs. But Wallace's best value over the past decade has been as a defensive anchor. Ben Wallace received most of the credit for Detroit's defensive resurgence in the early part of the this millennium, and Tayshaun Prince gets plenty of dap as well. But in the absence of Big Ben, 'Sheed has ably filled in the gap in the frontcourt. Wallace quietly blocks a good number of shots (he's the 50th best shot-blocker of all time), hits the boards hard, and doesn't foul much. It's weird with Detroit -- and this sullies the good names of Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton , too: dishing out credit for the Pistons' long run of defensive excellence is boggling exercise. Again, Prince seems to get much of the credit these days; that's fine, Tay is a fine defender. But don't we owe Wallace some deference here?   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

by Chris O’Leary The day went down like cod liver oil: December 19, 2006. Andre Miller, Joe Smith and two first rounders leaving Denver, destined to Philly for Ivan McFarlin and a guy named Allen Iverson. The 76ers traded the face of the franchise, and were left to try and save face, written-off by many to be the worst of a weak Eastern Conference. Left amid the rubble of the move was our man, no. 32 on this list, Andre Iguodala. At the time, Iguodala’s nickname, The Other AI, switched from a lovingly assigned moniker to a near insult — a reflection of the anticipation on how dilapidated the franchise was about to become. The Other AI had other plans for the franchise he inherited, though. Sure, one guy can’t get it done on his own, but Iggy stepped up and made the Sixers his team. His scoring average jumped from 12.3 points per in 2005–06 to 18.2 in ‘06–07 and finally to 19.9 last year. The Sixers’ wins increased too. When they were picked to fall to the bottom of the league’s standings, Philly managed 35 wins in 06–07 and then won 40 games last year, giving the Pistons a scare in the first round. True, his playoff performance (13.2 points 33 percent FG and 14 percent from three) wasn’t the stuff of the original AI, but dude’s just 24-years-old. He’ll get back there and he’ll succeed…unless Tayshaun Prince guards him again. All things considered — the team’s survival of the Iverson trade, Iggy’s continually improving play and th ...

by Ryne Nelson I’m not suggesting you give it a try, but mentally compartmentalizing NBA players can be a simple exercise: There are the athletic freaks of nature. Volatile malcontents. Extra-efficient specialists. Cocky superstars. Non-conformist social deviants. Corny, viral video hopefuls. Long-range gunslingers. The list continues… The process of creating mental groups allows us to comprehend what would otherwise be chaos in our mind. We do this as an automatic mind organizer – our anti-entropy filing system. To our brain, the NBA is too complex to have a single working definition. We build our conception from the ground up – players combine into groups; groups are arranged into concepts; and concepts form our opinions. For example, we might group RayRay, Michael Redd, and Joe Johnson since they’re all deadly shooters. Defensive students of the game, Shane Battier and Tayshaun Prince fit nicely. Chris Paul, Steve Nash and Deron Williams fit for obvious reasons. Gerald Wallace, Josh Smith and Rudy Gay practically own our cranium’s amazement compartment. Baron Davis and Chris Bosh go together as they’ll likely petition for our All-Star votes for years to come. We may combine these groups into larger, even more general groups until we finally create broad enough concepts to comprehend the NBA. It may seem difficult on paper, but when we all think ‘NBA,’ our brains do this automatically in a millisecond’s time. I tell you this bec ...

Filed under: Pistons , NBA Draft This offseason, NBA FanHouse will address important questions about the league. It will be a Summer of Answers . First up: the biggest draft busts of the decade. Joe Dumars is widely recognized as one of the top executives in the NBA, and while the Pistons have been unable to get over the hump since 2004, he's done an enviable job setting up his team to remain in contention through the draft, snatching up guys like Tayshaun Prince (2003), Jason Maxiell and Amir Johnson (2005) and Rodney Stuckey and Arron Afflalo (2007) after lottery teams had passed them over. Of course, Dumars didn't always have such a deft hand at the draft -- and I'm not just talking about a certain Serbian center who went second overall in 2004. In 2000, Dumars selected hometown hero Mateen Cleaves 14th overall out of Michigan State, passing on the likes of Hedo Turkoglu , Desmond Mason , Quentin Richardson , Morris Peterson , DeShawn Stevenson , Marko Jaric , Eduardo Najera , Eddie House and (this one hurts the most) Michael Redd . It didn't take long for Dumars to realize his mistake (Cleaves was dealt to Sacramento after one season), and as a consolation prize he was rewarded with another lottery pick. Unfortunately, he committed an even bigger blunder by taking Rodney White ninth overall. Rodney who? Exactly. Just one pick after White, Joe Johnson went off the board, and Richard Jefferson , Zach Randolph , Gerald Wallace , ...

So far this offseason the Lakers have re-signed Sasha Vujacic, and signed Josh Powell, Dwayne Mitchell, Joe Crawford, and Sun Yue. Most Lakers fan want Luke Walton and Vladimir Radmanovic gone, and they don’t care for who either as long as it isn’t someone with a worse contract. More than half of all Lakers fans want Lamar Odom traded for Ron Artest, Tayshaun Prince, Shawn Marion, or Carmelo Anthony. I wouldn’t mind having any of those players on the Lakers, except I wouldn’t want to have to give up Odom to get Prince. I think that if we were to trade anyone it would be Luke Walton because his contract still has 5 years on it. So he will be under contract for over 6 million a year when he will be completely worthless. Vladimir Radmanovic’s contract runs out the same year as Pau Gasol, Sasha Vujacic, and Kobe Bryant (if he doesn’t opt out and get a different contract this year). And we will probably have more people who’s contract run out that year too. Since Pau and Kobe will be older and won’t be asking for a bigger contract we don’t really need the cap room we get from Space Cadet’s contract running out. But with Kobe and Pau getting a smaller contract and Radmanovic’s expiring we will be able to sign a really good free agent. Even if Luke has a good season in 08-09 the Lakers will need to trade him because his contract goes way too long. That Lakers were rumored to be trying to get Shaun Livingston, Ron Artest, Shawn Marion, Udonis ...

This is my first FanPost to Blazer's Edge ... Dave's post on defense prompted me to generate this one ... Bruce Bowen has set the standard for years as the premier Defensive “Stopper” in the NBA. He continues to get the assignment on a nightly basis to try to neutralize the opposing team’s best player, because he often does just that. Bowen is 37 years old.   The next tier of Defensive “Stoppers” will almost certainly include the following players: Raja Bell, Tayshaun Prince, Shane Battier, Ron Artest, Andrei Kirilenko, Stephen Jackson and Ime Udoka. Bell is the oldest of that group at 32 years old and Kirilenko is the youngest at 27 years old.   The question that I have is who are the up and coming Defensive “Stoppers” in the NBA ?   Martell Webster has a legitimate shot at leading that up and coming group. Martell has gone from “not having a clue about defense” in Nate’s words as a rookie, to being evaluated as a “good” defender by Nate after this last season.   However, Martell had better continue to improve on the defensive end of the floor, because Nicolas Batum is waiting in the shadows …   ...
