Kenya and Tanzania marked the 10th anniversary Thursday of deadly bombings at the countries' U.S. embassies, as police conducted a manhunt for the al-Qaida suspect believed to have masterminded the attacks. The coordinated attacks on the morning of Aug. 7, 1998, killed more than 200 people and wounded 5,000 in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. The alleged mastermind, Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, has been on the run for years; he apparently escaped a police raid over the weekend on the Kenyan coast. Classrooms, a library, a health clinic and a women’s center are the first solid blocks of inspiration a Hinsdale resident brought to a small village in Tanzania in the past two-and-a-half years. Now, relying on the helping hands and encouragement of her supporters, Kellie O’Brien is hoping to brighten the village more, with electricity and running water. O’Brien, who founded the O’Brien School for the Maasai, was recently honored by alumni from Saker Baptist College in Cameroon, Africa, at a dinner gala. The path begins With song, dance and laughter, alumni from Saker Baptist College celebrated their successes Saturday night at the Ritz Carlton in downtown Chicago, and recognized their guest, O’Brien, for her drive for education. O’Brien and her daughter, Heather Bacon, were determined to help others when they spent Christmas 2006 at a convent in Sanya Juu, Tanzania. Their lives forever changed when they met Gabriel, a leader in the small Maasai village of Sanya Station, whose inhabitants had been praying for a school. Bea Mensah Tayui, president of the Chicago Tri State Ex-Saker College Students Association, and organizer of the celebration, said O’Brien is an inspiration. “This woman is passionate and she’s passionate about educating children and children that are not her own,” she said. “I think all of us as women who understand that spirit of nurturing — we know where you’re coming from and we hope that we can just have a litt ...
