Kodak’s new Theatre HD Player is a Wi-Fi-enabled set top box that connects to your HDTV . Kodak describes the unit as, "An interactive device displaying personal content - pictures, video, podcasts, music - and Web-based content on a HDTV, while wirelessly connecting to a household's private Wi-Fi network.” The Wi-Fi connection allows the unit to connect to websites such as Kodak Gallery and Flickr for photos, YouTube for video content, and RadioTime for streaming audio. Jumping on the Wii bandwagon the Theatre HD Player also includes a gyroscopic remote, which allows users to navigate the on screen menus with a wave of the hand... So, now that I finally joined the 21st century and upgraded one of my tube TVs to LCD, I am looking to add a DVR or two into the mix. I am looking for a non-subscription DVR with a built-in digital tuner and the ability to transfer content from one DVR to another via USB or other means. You might say I am looking for something like a DVD Recorder but I have had a string of bad luck with those so I would really rather stay away from that. I own a SanDisk TakeTV USB device that I am completely in love with. Alas, SanDisk abandoned the device last month so I am looking for something similar ... and permanent. In other words, I want to be able to record programs on one DVR and have the option to transfer it to a DVR in another room as well as the option to watch downloaded DIVX AVIs. I know this sounds like an awful lot but I don't know where to start except right here with you knowledgeable folks. All I know is that I need to upgrade from my analog VCR with external digital tuner to something a bit more practical in this age. ...

Back in January I wrote a post about Sansa’s TakeTV, a neat little device that allow you to drag and drop video onto a USB device and then plug it into your TV for living-room viewership. — The unit worked really well for a 1st-gen device with good video quality, easy setup and, most importantly, [...] ...

At CES 2007, Sandisk gave us a sneak preview of TakeTV, a little flash-based device that allowed you to easily move content from your PC to the TV.  I had a very simple, familiar and easily understood usage model, albeit with a couple technical hitches.  The first was that the USB port wasn't 100% compatible with standard USB and therefore required an external dongle on the PC side.  Its a problem that wasn't insurmountable for the initial release and they claimed to have an answer for future revisions.   The second became clear after I received a sample in the summer time.  The video codec implemenation was limited to Divx and one or two other variants, but it wouldnt play any of my .mpg files without convers ... ...

Sandisk TakeTV - what appears like a winner from the beginning - has recently been killed off along with its Fanfare online video store by the company that allegedly wishes to refocus on its mobile entertainment business. TakeTV was originally touted as a USB PC-to-TV video device that can playback XviD, DivX and MPEG-4 on a TV set. It comprises of three components: the remote, TV dock and the storage with the latter doubles as a video decoder. 4GB and 8GB were initially selling for $99.99 and $149.99 respectively. The Fanfare online video store sold TV shows provided from content providers. So, what's wrong? Here's a list: People who are already tech-savvy enough to figure out how the Sandisk TakeTV works maybe also familiar with media compatibility on their gaming consoles (XBox 360 / PS3) and DivX-enabled DVD players Similar devices like Apple TV, media extender and dedicated media hard drive players like the LaCie LaCinema are just everywhere Lack of content from the first-tier names. Only CBS and ShowTime were among the handful of providers out there. S-video as the best connection to the TV, and small capacity make the TakeTV even less appealing Permanent Link ...

SanDisk’s attempt to crack the Internet video market with their TakeTV hardware and Fanfare download service has ended: A terse note on the Fanfare Web site indicates that the “Fanfare beta has come to a conclusion, and the Fanfare application will be disabled as of 5/15/08.” As for the TakeTV hardware, a representative for SanDisk has [...] ...

Section: Video , Portable Video , Computers , Hardware This goes out to all you our dear readers who have used SanDisk’s video download service called Fanfare and its accompanying hardware, TakeTV. If you’ve liked the service, too bad you won’t be able to use it anymore as SanDisk has just axed the service and stopped selling the hardware. So, what are you going to do with your TakeTV hardware? Luckily, SanDisk said that you can still use it’s drag-and-drop features to watch (non-Fanfare) digital videos on your TV. Well, that was pretty comforting. Alright for those who don’t know what are talking about here, Fanfare was being touted as a cheaper alternative to the iTunes store. While TakeTV is like an Apple media player it provided a quick, easy and portable way of watching DivX, Xvid and MPEG4 videos on your TV, similar to what game consoles such as the Xbox 360 or PS3 can also do. So, it is understandable that SanDisk would be forced to close down the service and stopped selling the hardware. Especially since, Fanfare didn’t get a much needed partnership agreement with content providers. SanDisk has officially killed its TakeTV project as well as its accompanying Fanfare video content portal. Chances are, this may be the first time you've even heard of TakeTV. Despite getting lots of attention at CES 2007, the product failed to gain any traction with consumers. TakeTV was only launched last October . TakeTV was a "bridge solution" designed to easily bring your downloaded video content from your computer to your television. CBS, Showtime, Jaman.com and TV Guide were among the content providers who participated in the device's trials. TakeTV and its Fanfare service was an attempt by SanDisk to challenge Apple. But faced with competition from not only Apple, but Microsoft, Netflix's Roku, and an assload of other networked devices that offered more content and more convenience, the TakeTV never had a chance. Besides the demo models at CES, the only TakeTV model I ever saw in person was a freebie SanDisk sent to my boss to check out. He asked me to load up his new TakeTV with videos but our library of content is all iTunes ready MP4s - which didn't work on the TakeTV. We never picked it the TakeTV again. If you want to check out the TakeTV, Amazon.com is still selling them. The 4GB model costs $99 US . The 8GB is $149 . You can probably expect those prices to go much lower in the coming weeks. SanDisk stopped shipping the TakeTV and shutdown its Fanfare service on May 15th - sadly no one seemed to notice until today. To rel ...

Falling victim to ever increasing competition in the tech world, SanDisk has announced that it is closing it’s Fanfare video download service and ceasing production on it’s TakeTV device, which we reported on last year . That didn’t take long. In a very business-like and curt fashion, SanDisk informed users through the Fanfare Website that “Fanfare beta has come to a conclusion, and the Fanfare application will be disabled as of 5/15/08.” That means it took only eight months from announcement to it’s demise, which follows on the heal of similar video download services like Akimbo and Moviebeam. The difference, however, is that San Disk is not hanging their users out to dry. Even though the Fanfare download service has been discontinued, those who have already invested in the TakeTV hardware can still enjoy it thanks to the TakeTV drag and drop feature which allows users to fill their gadget with non-fanfare digital videos from the internet, TV, etc. TakeTV has the ability to watch DivX and it’s open source variant xVid, and MPEG4 videos. This ability has made TakeTV more attractive to the BitTorrent crowd and less appealing to those seeking a more structured, iTunes style downloading experience. Late last year, SanDisk released without much fanfare a PC to TV video player along with a software suite, Fanfare, that seemed intent on competing with iTunes. The latter was launched as a beta, with SanDisk carefully watching how people reacted to the products. Apparently the reaction wasn't what SanDisk was hoping for, and following some rumors they have officially announced the end of both pro... ...

TakeTV and Fanfare never made it to their first birthday. (Credit: SanDisk) SanDisk has killed off the Fanfare video download service and its companion hardware, the TakeTV. A terse note on the Fanfare Web site indicates that the "Fanfare beta has come to a conclusion, and the Fanfare application will be disabled as of 5/15/08." As for the TakeTV hardware, a representative for SanDisk has confirmed to CNET that the TakeTV is no longer being sold. However, she went on to point out that existing users still will be able to use the product's drag-and-drop feature for watching a variety of (non-Fanfare) digital videos on their TV. In other words, unlike those stuck with oversized paperweights when the Akimbo and MovieBeam services shut down, the TakeTV, at least, is still a usable product. ... ...

The first U.S-based content partners on the Fanfareベータ版のアメリカにおける最初のコンテンツ供給パートナーは以下の各社です。CBS、Jaman.comInc.、Showtime Networks、Smithsonian Networks、The Weather Channel、TV GuideBroadband。当初から配信される番組には、CSI、Survivor China、Dexter、Sleeper Cellが含まれます。気の毒に、結局、FanFareはベータのまま終了した。[原文へ](翻訳:Namekawa, U) ...

We told you about SanDisk's TakeTV PC-to-TV USB device and its accompanying Fanfare video portal back when it was first launched but it hasn't really been on our radar since. It seems it wasn't on anyone else's radar either, as SanDisk has announced it's closing down the service a mere 8 months after it first came to market. The TakeTV was a simple USB flash drive that carried content from the computer to the television, but with SanDisk's lack of experience in the content distribution market and only a couple of Fanfare deals with NBCU and CBS, the service never really got off the ground. If you already own a TakeTV flash drive, it'll still work, but you'll have to find your web video from other platforms than Fanfare. Via paidcontent ...
