As many as 70 people at a Boy Scout camp in Virginia have come down with food poisoning that may have come from a hamburger packing plant in Azusa, California, which is recalling 153,630 pounds of raw meat as a result. Virginia health officials say dozens of Boy Scouts have come down with strain 0157:H7 of E. coli bacterial infections. One scout remains hospitalized, and 26 others have needed medical care, some in hospitals. "We are recalling the product from distribution channels until we can determine whether illnesses in Virginia are connected to our operations or have some other original source or cause," said Jeff Grohs, a vice president at S & S Foods in Azusa, in an e-mail to the Pasadena Star-News. This is the second recall of Beef in the U.S. in the past 24 hours. Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods Market announced on August 8, 2008, a recall of fresh ground Beef sold June 2, 2008, to Aug. 6, 2008, in Illinois and other states due to fears of E. coli contamination. A Whole Foods spokeswoman told The Associated Press it had received reports that seven people in Massachusetts and two people in Pennsylvania who shopped at Whole Foods became ill. The company issued a statement on its Web site saying the recall is in response to state and federal investigations of E. coli outbreak. Whole Foods Market representatives told Associated Press reporters the Beef in question apparently came from Coleman Natural Beef whose Nebraska Beef processing plant was previously subject to an earlier nationwide recall for E. coli contamination. The recall affected only ground Beef, Laura Reiser, spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on August 9, 2008. The products have been linked to illnesses in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illlinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Reiser told the Associated Press she wasn’t sure at the time of the first recall whether that initial USDA investigation had spread beyond the area of the Omaha plant that produces ground Beef linked to the prior cases of E. Coli. An Apple a Day U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer announced on August 8, 2008, that $49 million will be provided in fresh fruits ...
