A Tablet not pitched at business? When you think about Tablet PCs, it's more than likely you'll think of a business tool. However, HP has taken a slightly different approach with the Pavilion tx2130ea and aimed it at the consumer market. By reducing the price to a more than affordable £699 and selling it through stores such as PC World it can reach a far wider audience. Read HP Pavilion tx2130ea Tablet PC on Pocket-lint ...

We knew amidst all of Intel’s Atom talk here at IDF that the company would unveil its newest netbook - the Classmate 3. Far more interesting than their mysterious slate , Intel have been showing off their UrbanMax concept Tablet PC. Resembling both an HP tc1100 and an HTC Shift, the concept has a sliding/folding display and full keyboard, with an optical mouse controller embedded into the spacebar. UrbanMax’s 11-inch display uses N-trig’s DuoSense digitizer , capable of multiple input methods : a batteryless pen and zero pressure capacitive touch, together with multitouch control. Check out the demo video of the UrbanMax after the cut Although this prototype of the concept was running an Core 2 Duo processor, Intel would leave actual specs up to whichever OEM/ODM picked up the design. That also leaves some flexibility in terms of the digitizer, meaning that lower-cost versions might have a basic resistive touchscreen rather than N-trig’s more advanced system. No word on any interest from manufacturers, but there are a lot of people out there - myself included - who still think very fondly of the HP tc1100 and are beginning to wonder if the UrbanMax could be a spiritual successor. GottaBeMobile shot the following video at IDF of the UrbanMax concept in action: Relevant Entries on SlashGear Intel Ruby gets polished up Intel shows off concept PC with integrated WiMAX Intel’s mystery Tablet: reworked clinical assistant or new Classmate? Albatron are preparing to launch their Tee PC, a slate-style Tablet PC netbook. Running Windows CE, the Tee PC has a 7-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, anaemic 400MHz ARM926 CPU, 128MB RAM and just 128MB of flash storage; thankfully the latter can be expanded with an SD card. Connectivity includes WiFi and Bluetooth, and there’s a choice of VGA or 1.3-megapixel webcams. Despite the relatively slow processor the slate is capable of playing back VGA quality video at 30fps, or alternatively H.264 and MPEG4 content. No runtime is suggested for the 10.8Whr battery. The specs aren’t going to blow anyone away (not even rock them gently in their shoes), but the portability might: the Tee PC measures just 188 x 113 x 13mm and weighs a mere 343g. A docking station - with USB, built-in speakers and audio ports - will be included in the package. Albatron are yet to announce pricing or an actual release date. If they can make it cheap enough, the compact dimensions might just win them some interest. Hey Intel, this is what should’ve been your mystery device ! At a round-table event today, Intel’s Tom Rampone unveiled the company’s new Classmate Tablet PC , a touchscreen convertible version of the existing Classmate PC that was first tipped back in July . Designed to sell alongside the current model, the new Classmate has an 8.9-inch, 1024 x 600 display and runs on a 1.6GHz Atom CPU. The webcam rotates so as to work in both laptop and slate orientations, and the handle has been toughened up and reshaped to provide a secure holding point for carrying the Classmate in Tablet mode. Storage is courtesy of an unspecified SSD, and there’s also an SD slot, two USB ports and video output. Intel apparently expect the Classmate Tablet PC to reach the market by the end of the year. No pricing details have been given. It's no secret that I don't currently own a Tablet PC. As a contributing writer for GottaBeMobile , a site that is deeply rooted in the Tablet PC community, you'd think that I would own a Tablet and preach the gospel of its benefits. I love mobile technology, but does the fact that I'm not a Tablet owner indicate they're not all they're cracked up to be? Here are two reasons why some people have yet to investigate the Tablet PC's potential: Bad Marketing From an educator's standpoint, I see huge potential for the Tablet PC to prosper in the classroom. A recent post by GBM's Matt Faulkner highlights a school in Tuscaloosa, Alabama that has foregone textbooks for Tablet PCs. An interesting note about the article's headline is that it reads, "Private Tuscaloosa School Trades Textbooks For Laptops ." The article and associated video does comment on the ability to write on the laptops and occasionally refers to them as tablets, but promotes the program as a laptop driven endeavor. The general public struggles to distinguish the advantages between a Tablet and a regular, old-fashioned laptop. Poor marketing has led to a lack of familiarity and understanding of the Tablet PC's true functionality and benefits. James Kendrick of jkOnTheRun points out that the new Microsoft web site doesn't mention the Tablet PC. His post about this topic has created a stir among the Tablet PC community regarding the future of Tablets. This is yet another e ...

Yesterday, Loren Heiny responded to a post by Microsoft’s Steven Sinofsky about customizing Windows and the many responses that they have received from users, some of whom think that allowing users to turn features on or off based on how they plan to use their computers. In the post he listed the Tablet PC bits as an example that could be turned off. Some examples are quite easy to see and you should expect us to do more along these lines, such as the TabletPC components. I have a PC that is a very small laptop and while it has full Tablet functionality it isn’t the best size for doing good ink work for me (I prefer a 12.1” or greater and this PC is a 10” screen). The Tablet code does have a footprint in memory and on the 1GB machine if I go and remove the Tablet components the machine does perform better. This is something I can do today. Folks have asked about Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Windows Mail, Windows Calendar…this is good feedback and good things for us to consider for Windows 7. Loren’s response was similar to mine: Yes, he’s saying that even on a Tablet PC, the Tablet bits don’t have enough value for him . Loren took Steven to task for his comments on screen size and Inking as well, recalling the Tableteers lament for the HP tc1100, which by most accounts was a great, if not the great Tablet PC at a 10inch screen size. Sinofsky responded in a comment to Loren’s post saying the following: I think you read more than I w ...
