Nearly 50 per cent of TEACHERS are unsupportive of new plans to allow them to search pupils for drugs and alcohol. They told the Teacher Supprt Network (TSN) that they did not believe this would have an impact on children bringing these items into school. Additionally, the organisation's questionnaire found that 80 per cent of TEACHERS are unaware about what their legal rights are to search pupils for weapons, the Times Educational Supplement reports. Chief executive of TSN Patrick Nash raised concerns about the government failing to consider the safety of TEACHERS. 'Two-thirds of TEACHERS tell us that they would not feel safe in conducting a search, and we remain unconvinced that expecting TEACHERS to fulfil this role is the right course of action,' he stated. Recommendations for TEACHERS to be able to conduct more extensive searches of pupils were made by government adviser Sir Alan Steer earlier this month. ...

An increasing number of trainee TEACHERS are dropping out of the course before its completion, according to new figures. And overall, more than a quarter of trainees (28 per cent) decide not to pursue a teaching career. These statistics emerged in a study by Buckingham University academics Professor Alan Smithers and Dr Pamela Robinson. In their report, they suggested that the worst hit subjects are maths and modern languages. The academics suggested that students experience a 'culture shock' when they enter the classroom as a trainee, reports The Daily Telegraph. And the study also reveals that trainees in subjects such as classics, history and English are generally better qualified than those in maths, ICT and languages. This, Mr Smithers noted, could be a factor behind the drop out rates, with better qualified TEACHERS more enthusiastic about their subject. Research recently published by the General Teaching Council suggested that four in ten TEACHERS leave the profession within two years. ...
