Saturday night the TCA honored its tube faves with a typically brief and lively ceremony at the Hilton. The Smothers Brothers opened the show with some of their trademark humor, commenting on their groundbreaking, hilarious, fractious, and eventually cancelled '60s CBS show with a retooled version of "Those Were the Days." It was surreal watching some of the winners mingle at the pre- and post-show parties. It was like, "You got your '30 Rock' in my 'Mad Men'!" Everyone was simultaneously in awe of, and slightly afraid of Jamie Hector, Marlo Stanfield on the "Wire." The Brothers Smother, who once offstage worked very blue indeed, also received genuflections throughout the night. The collective goodwill in the room was especially palpable for "The Wire" as creator David Simon and his cast received a standing ovation when they accepted their Heritage Award. Jon Hamm of "Mad Men" gave a funny speech in which he thanked "Keeping up with the Kardashians," "Flavor of Love," and "Rock of Love" "one, two, and apparently three" for making "Mad Men" look that much better by comparison. Co-star John Slattery added with a grin "I'm glad our message of smoking, drinking and whoring has registered with the TCA." All of the winners gave lively speeches but special mention goes to Tina Fey, Paul Giamatti, and Tom Hanks- who won as a producer of HBO's "John Adams." When picking up her Individual Achievment in Comedy trophy Fey thanked the TCA for help ...

Filed under: 30 Rock , TCA Press Tour , Awards , Reality-Free , Mad Men Tonight, the members of the Television Critics Association (including me) gathered at the Beverly Hilton to give out its annual Awards. The membership voted on the Awards in the month leading up to the press tour; we were given a number of candidates to choose from in various categories. The membership was also asked to choose recipients for an individual Career Achievement award and the Heritage Award, which recognizes a past show that had a big impact artistically and on the industry. The members didn't reach back too far for the Heritage Award: it was given to The Wire . As for current shows, the members gave Mad Men a bushel of Awards: Program of the Year, Outstanding New Program, and Outstanding Achievement in Drama. 30 Rock won for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, and Tina Fey won the Individual Achievement in Comedy award for her performance. John Adams won the mini-series award; its star, Paul Giamatti, won the Individual Achievement in Drama award. Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live received the Career Achievement award. A complete list of winners is after the jump. Continue reading TCA Awards: Mad Men, 30 Rock and The Wire are big winners - TCA Report   Permalink  |  Email this  | |  Comments ...

Capping a week in which it got 16 Emmy nominations, "Mad Men" snared three TV Critics Association Awards Saturday. The first year of the sleek serial about life of 1960s ad men took outstanding new program, outstanding achievement in drama and program of the year. Program creator Matthew Weiner, who had been flanked by his cast for other Awards said the notice marked the end of a year he said has been "a dream." Star Jon Hamm thanked reality shows like "Flavor of Love," and "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" for "pushing the envelope so far one way that there as a place we could sort of sneak into at the other end." Said cast member John Slattery, "I'm glad our message of smoking, drinking and whoring has registered with the TCA."  They were the first TCA Awards for AMC, which tied HBO and NBC for most Awards of the night, three. PBS went away with two, one for "The War" and the other for "WordGirl." In comedy, it was all "30 Rock" with the TV-centric show winning outstanding achievement in comedy and outstanding individual achievement in comedy for its star and creator Tina Fey, who in her acceptance speech described her show as "the most successful cable show on broadcast television." "I'm sorry the rest of the cast couldn't be here," she said. "NBC is broke." HBO's miniseries John Adams won best miniseries and outstanding individual achievement for Paul Giamatti, who ran to the stage to accept and called the long shoot coveri ...

"Please never put this show on television," Tom Hanks said Saturday night at the charmingly amateurish TV Critics Association 24th Award Show. In the same Beverly Hilton ballroom where critics had taken in dozens of press conferences over the past two weeks (but also the same space where the Golden Globe Awards are held), critics gussied up and (mostly) put away their pens and tape recorders for their own version of an Awards show, which was enhanced considerably by the presence of a bona fide Hollywood star in Hanks, but also by Paul Giamatti, who had starred in the miniseries Hanks helped produce, "John Adams," the "SNL" brain trust of Lorne Michaels and Tina Fey, and the glamorous and newly ubiquitous cast of the it show of the moment, "Mad Men." It's fun to be among stars, critics can admit at the annual event, and they turn from skeptical outsiders to devoted fans they can be. And even if stars may be jaded by shelves full of accolades, they seem to enjoy the ability to thank those who helped draw attention to their work and in some cases kept it on the air. That was the case for "The Wire," said David Simon, winner of the Heritage Award for the series on the collapse of urban institutions in the 21st century through the lens of the police department. It was all but canceled after its third season, Chase said, but for the glowing notices that continued, allowing a fourth season that remains a shining example of the best of t ...
