As wireless computing mushrooms with new devices, applications, and a global move toward "openness," one analyst is suggesting some contraction is in order. Specifically, analyst Jack Gold says the open Symbian and open Android operating systems should combine into a single open source operating system for mobile devices. He further predicts that such a combination will occur in three to six months. Gold said he based his comments on conditions in the market and not on information that officials in either movement told him. [ Related : Read all about Google Android in InfoWorld's special report ] Officials from Symbian Software would not comment, saying they do not comment on market speculation, and officials from the Open Handset Alliance , which is developing the Android mobile platform, could not be reached for comment. Gold said that Android backers have not commented to him specifically on the possibility of a combination, but Symbian sources have indicated a willingness to work with other open source groups. "With so many players on both teams, there has to be some cross-fertilization going on and no doubt some discussions," Gold said in an email. Gold, principal analyst at J. Analyst J Gold and Associates has come out with a prediction that Symbian and Android will begin merging into one open source OS within 3-6 months, and it's gotten a fair bit of airplay. The reasons? -- "Google's ( NSDQ: GOOG ) investment in Android is "diluting the potential for it [Google] to build compelling cross-device applications where it can generate substantial revenues". -- Symbian could get some cred with the open source community. -- Fewer platforms for the market, which would benefit everybody. "A combination of the Android and Symbian efforts would be good for the industry, good for Google and good for Symbian," J. Gold said. "It would also help spur a growth in the availability of applications and services. The downside is minimal. Everyone wins," reports Information Week . It's true that Symbian does need to attract unpaid developers to its open source effort, and it's also true that Symbian CEO Nigel Clifford said that the organization would be happy to work with Google "on the application level or…could be on the more fundamental operating system level"—although I thought this would be more about Google's applications and services rather than Android. One of Nokia's ( NYSE: NOK ) reasons for making Symbian open source was to drive innovation by attracting developers. Symbian is still associated almost exclusively with Nokia, and the organization is aware this could be a problem with vp of strategy John Forsyth telling OSCON that "the rapidly forming group needs a "clean-room culture" with its own offices, and populated by technical experts from handset- and service-vendor members who don't simply echo their masters' corporate voice" reports The Register . Company blog Nokia Conversations has a piece indicating that it may not be that simple. The post quotes Nokia developer Janne Jalkanen (who apparently didn't realise it was an interview and described his comments as a rant ) saying: "I doubt that open sourcing Symbian is going to help in the community building though. There are two kinds of OSS developers: the guys who do things for fun, and the guys who do OSS because they are paid to do so. In order for an open source project to really flourish and take over the world, you need both...The problem with Symbian is that very, very few people touch it for fun." This is a personal view, not the official company line.
