The Guangdong Acrobatic Troupe of China's Swan Lake is either sacrilege or a bracing slap to the face of classical ballet. I see no reason why it can't be both. Watching it performed at Covent Garden is like that moment in the first Batman movie when Jack Nicholson's Joker marches into the Gotham Art Museum and announces, "Gentlemen, let's broaden our minds...", before desecrating everything. ...

The Guangdong Acrobatic Troupe's Swan Lake is phenomenal and cheesy, sometimes both in the same breath. On the one hand, you get blurry storytelling, tacky effects and a corps de ballet on roller skates. On the other, you get performers doing the impossible – most spectacularly, that scene where the heroine dances, on pointe, on top of Wei Baohua's head. Once balanced, Wu Zhengdan kicks her other foot into a high extension. And then she does a backbend, her head level with her supporting ankle. The audience reacts with awed disbelief. ...

It should be the perfect vehicle for the National Ballet of China. After all, in so many ways, Swan Lake resembles a Chinese ghost story. The evil magician; the enchanted, shape-shifting heroine, one thing by day, another by night; the blundering innocent who stumbles into the middle of the spell and falls in love with something not quite human; the misunderstandings and mistaken identities and impossible feats of physical bravura. ...

It's been more than a decade since Oingo Boingo put away its eclectic brand of new wave shock music, leaving frontman Danny Elfman alone to work on movie orchestrations. Judging from the latest update, our man Danny is starting to show the signs of prolonged isolation. How do we know? He's turned to writing music for ballet. According to Southern California Public Radio, Elfman has composed all the music for "Rabbit and Rogue," a new ballet by Twyla Tharp and a co-production with the Orange County Performing Arts Center. (Click here to listen to the audio interview.) "The orchestral music that I more or less grew up on was ballet," Elfman tells the station. "Ballet made sense to me. It was the 'Rite of Spring' that changed my life. It was 'Romeo and Juliet' that made me go 'Wow!' " The production will be staged this weekend in SoCal. Afterward, Elfman's back to work that seems more, well "Elfish" -- three new films, a Broadway musical based on Harry Houdini, and music for a Cirque de Soleil show to be based in Los Angeles. Filed under: Arts and Culture , China , Video If you thought the Chinese acrobatics feats during the Olympics were something to behold, check out this video of the The Guangdong Acrobatics Troupe of China. This is an edited version of the performance of the ballet Swan Lake that was taken on a world tour a couple of years ago. As someone who can't even touch her toes, I find this truly stunning and amazing. There are sections where the video is a bit dark, but stay with it. Sections of the performance are edited together. The variety of dancers and acrobatics is like a kaleidoscope. Here is an article about the performance from China Daily in 2005.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Royal Opera House, London: In this collaboration between circus and ballet, the Swan Lake story forms a basis for showcasing the Guangdong Troupe's startling acrobatic skills. It is clear from the gasps of disbelief that many present had never witnessed such exceptional feats before, or been to a circus where similar things are seen all the time. Read the full review ...
