Related Articles Social support, discrimination, and coping as predictors of posttraumatic stress reactions in youth Survivors of Hurricane Katrina. J Clin Child Adolesc Psychol. 2008 Jul;37(3):564-74 Authors: Pina AA, Villalta IK, Ortiz CD, Gottschall AC, Costa NM, Weems CF This study examined the influence of aspects of the post-Hurricane Katrina recovery environment (i.e., discrimination, social support) and coping behaviors on children's posttraumatic stress reactions (symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], anxiety, and depression). Data corresponding to 46 youth (M = 11.43 years; 39% girls; 33% African American, 67% European American) revealed that greater helpfulness from extrafamilial sources of social support predicted lower levels of child-rated symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression. A positive predictive relation was found between helpfulness from professional support sources and PTSD, perhaps suggesting that parents whose children were experiencing higher PTSD symptom levels sought professional support and reported it to be helpful. Youths' avoidant coping behaviors predicted both PTSD and anxiety symptoms. Discrimination, active coping, and familial support did not predict any of the posttraumatic stress reactions assessed in this study. PMID: 18645747 [PubMed - in process] ...

The U.S. Coast Guard announced that it has suspended the search for Survivors of the Air Force B-52 bomber that crashed Monday morning off the coast of Guam. Over the last few days the Coast Guard led a massive joint civilian and military search for the crew but are now switching their mission to focus on recovery of the air crew, "It's extremely difficult to suspend this search," said Capt. For the past two Saturdays, baseball or softball teams have converged at Morse Park, not only to play but also to raise funds for Eric’s Survivors, a Newton County Relay For Life team. “This is our first year for the tournament,” said Heather Reiboldt, co-organizer of the ball tourn-ament. “The proceeds will go toward the 2009 Relay.” The Relay For Life team is named for Eric Honeycutt, who passed away from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). He was born May 30, 1980, and passed away on Aug. 28, 1987. “We had nine boys’ teams and nine girls’ teams,” Reiboldt said. “We did a round robin for the teams. I think that we had a good turnout this year, considering it is our first year. Hopefully we can spread the word about how it went this year and we will more involved next year.” Later this year, Reiboldt is hoping to have a co-ed adult tournament, the date has not yet been set. ALL is a common leukemia, with about 4,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the United States, according to a previous article in the Neosho Daily News. Most cases of ALL occur in children under the age of 10, but can appear in all age groups. It is not inherited and it is caused by a change in the cells in the bone marrow. It is a disease that gets worse quickly. “He was diagnosed when he was 2 years and four months old with leukemia,” said Karen Honeycutt, Eric’s mother. “Eric had low grade fever, lymph nodes swollen, and severe fatigue.” Eric lived for five y ...
