By Bill MILLER A gunman with a turtleneck pulled up over his face robbed a gas station late Tuesday in north Fort Worth, police said. The robbery was reported at 11:40 p.m. at the Valero Station, 10880 N. Beach St., said Lt. Paul Henderson, police spokesman. A man entered the store dressed in black but only his eyes were visible because of the way he had the sweater pulled up over his face and he wore a black ball cap, Henderson said. He pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and demanded money while jacking a round into the chamber. He got $70 and left in a burgundy four-door car, possibly a Mazda, Henderson said. The suspect was described as a black man, about 6-feet-5-inches tall, Henderson said. He wore white tennis shoes and is ball cap had a red "T" on it. His black shorts had some sort of writing on the both back pockets, Henderson said. "There are Surveillance cameras at the Valero," Henderson said. "However, the manager last night was unable to retrieve the video or make a copy. Hopefully we will be able to obtain a copy sometime later this week." ... Source: p10.hostingprod.com --- 34 days ago
What actual use to the public, are Select Committees of the House of Commons, and the Reports which they publish ? The Labour Government invariably cherry picks a quotation from the summary of such a Report, especially if it was written by a Labour Chairman of the Committee e.g. Government Response to the Home Affairs Committee: A Surveillance Society? (.pdf) leaped on the phrase , We reject crude characterisations of our society as a Surveillance society in which all collection and means of collecting information about citizens are networked and centralised in the service of the state. This allowed the Government to claim: The Government welcomes the committee's rejection of the characterisation that we live in a Surveillance society where the state is engaged in a centralised network of collecting and analysing information on the individual. Anyone actually reading though the detail of the Report, will see that it actually supports the premise that the UK is already a Surveillance Society. See Home Affairs Committee report - A Surveillance Society ? - unenforceable recommendations which the Government will simply ignore Incredibly, it seems that such Select Committee Reports, published in public, cannot be quoted , even in passing, in a Court of Law or a Tribunal , because that somehow infringes on the freedom of speech of Members of Parliament , according to the 1689 Bill of Rights - see: High Court upholds OGC appeal against Inform ... Over the last couple of days Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) has been picking up lots of Veep buzz. Even so, fellow Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) remains a top pick in the Veepstakes guessing game. Despite the general kinship between the potential nominees and Barack Obama , each candidate has subtle but significant policy differences with the IL senator; Bayh on security and Surveillance issues and Biden on bankruptcy. Let's take a look: Bayh : Bayh and Obama have remarkably similar records in the Senate, voting together on just fewer than 90% of the votes for which both were present. But Bayh, a member of the Intelligence and Armed Services Cmte, has a conservative streak on intelligence issues that Obama does not share. Bayh voted to add more spaces for detainees at U.S. detention facilities, while Obama voted against it. The IL senator voted in favor of a defense appropriations Bill that pegged U.S. Iraq strategy to a series of “benchmarks” – an approach that ran contrary to the stricter timetable Obama then endorsed. Most notably, while both he and Obama voted yea on the FISA Bill in late June, Bayh voted against an amendment to strike retroactive telecom immunity from the Bill – an amendment introduced, in no small part, so Obama could vote for it. The two senators differed on a another wiretapping Bill last year, with Bayh voting for expanded telecommunications information gathering and Obama voting against. Bayh has also been ambivalent ab ... Source: www.eff.org --- 33 days ago

Lawyers for Sen. Ted Stevens signaled Tuesday they'll try to keep jurors from hearing as many as 105 phone calls the FBI recorded as part of the investigation that led to the 84-year-old Alaska Republican's indictment on corruption charges. The phone calls appear to be among thousands of hours of secretly recorded phone conversations and video Surveillance that have helped prosecutors land seven convictions and guilty pleas in a sweeping multiyear probe of corruption in Alaska politics. In documents filed Tuesday, Stevens' lawyers complained that prosecutors dumped more than 400 hours of video and audio evidence on them last month, but that little of it was related to Stevens. Only 105 of the 2,800 intercepted phone calls feature Stevens, his lawyers wrote. Jury selection begins Sept. 22 and Stevens goes to trial two days later on seven counts of lying on his annual financial disclosure reports about gifts and home repairs he allegedly received from an oil services company and its CEO, Bill Allen. A judge granted an expedited trial so that Stevens could face a jury before the Nov. 4 election. Stevens, who won the Republican primary last week, faces Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, a Democrat, in the general election. His lawyers on Tuesday filed motions that criticized prosecutors for a vaguely written indictment and for insinuating that Stevens took bribes. The government "obviously wishes to import the stench of a bribery prosecution ... Source: www.redstate.com --- 28 days ago
And McCain's Really Don't If you looked at Barack Obama's record, public statements and campaign platform as of any time before June 3, 2008 (the last day of the Democratic primaries), you could detect a trend: on issue after issue after issue, there was a conservative position, a moderate position, a liberal position...and then there was an Obama position . Other liberals opposed the Iraq War; Obama called for complete withdrawal by March 2008 . Other liberals opposed confrontation with Iran; Obama pledged to meet its leader unconditionally. Other liberals supported abortion on demand or even partial-birth abortion; Obama went beyond that to oppose any legal protection for a child born alive after a failed abortion . Other liberals supported amnesty to give illegal immigrants citizenship and "bring them out of the shadows"; Obama championed giving drivers licenses to illegal aliens even as they continued to live outside the law. Other liberals were concerned about Surveillance outside of the FISA framework; Obama pledged to filibuster even a Bill that brought Surveillance into that framework unless it allowed civil lawsuits against phone companies that had complied with prior government requests. Other liberals voted against Justice Alito; Obama voted against Chief Justice Roberts, too , and for that matter voted to filibuster to prevent a vote on Alito . Other liberals courted liberal interest groups; Obama sought the nomination ... Source: www.blogher.com --- 30 days ago
Have you heard about the "new" CDC Surveillance system used for tracking new HIV infections? Did you notice that the infection rate is considerably higher than originally reported? Our Bodies, Our Blog has an overview of the CDC's revised HIV infection estimates . “Using the new Surveillance system, CDC estimates that 56,300 new HIV infections occurred in the United States in 2006. CDC previously estimated that approximately 40,000 new HIV infections occurred annually since the 1990s. The 2006 incidence estimate is about 40% higher than the previous estimates. The new system reveals that the epidemic is—and has been—worse than previously estimated and underscores the need to expand HIV prevention to reach those at greatest risk.” Read Chairman Waxman's statement on the new CDC HIV Incidence numbers : There are proven measures that change people’s behavior and reduce HIV transmission. As the total number of people with HIV in the United States has risen, so has the need for these programs. But unbelievably, in recent years the HIV prevention budget has gone down. Since fiscal year 2002, when adjusted for inflation, CDC’s prevention budget has actually shrunk by 19%. The President has recently requested decreases in funding for HIV prevention at CDC. So the rate of HIV infection has increased, HIV prevention education works, but we're cutting funding for HIV prevention education. Why is that? Bill Clinton, speaking at the Internatio ... The blood on the retaining wall and smeared on the sleeping bag made Bill Leonardi think there was someone dead inside. The Viking Development property manager made the grim discovery at about 7 a.m. Thursday behind the Ethan Allen furniture store while making his routine check of the Home Depot plaza. Police found a badly beaten, but conscious 38-year-old homeless woman inside the sleeping bag. “They called her by name and asked her who did it, but I don’t know if she was able to tell them,” Leonardi said. “She called out for an ambulance.” Police say the woman’s face and head injuries were severe, but not life-threatening. She was taken to Jordan Hospital and transferred to Boston Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition. Police Capt. Michael Botieri said police knew the homeless woman from previous encounters. Detectives found three bloody footprints on the sidewalk outside Pilgrim Wine and Spirits and are looking at the store’s Surveillance tapes for possible suspects. The woman told police her attacker was on a bicycle. Dunkin’ Donuts workers also reported a suspicious person in the area, but a search with police dogs turned up nothing, Botieri said. Pilgrim Wine and Spirits manager Tony Colantonio did not see the bloody prints when he entered the store Thursday morning. He said store owner Richard Grafton saw a homeless woman panhandling near the plaza marquee Tuesday afternoon and later saw her heading for th ...

It doesn’t exactly fit with Barack Obama’s message that Washington is broken, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi used her convention speech tonight to debut the latest list of accomplishments congressional Democrats will highlight this fall. According to Pelosi, the Democratic Congress can take credit for: implementing the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission; rebuilding the Gulf Coast; passing tax rebates to stimulate the economy; passing the recent Bill aimed at the housing crisis; raising the minimum wage; increasing fuel efficiency standards; making college loans more affordable; and making educational benefits more generous for benefits. She never got around to mentioning a few items that might be higher on the priority list for Democratic base voters, like the failure to end the Iraq war and the electronic Surveillance Bill that angered many of the party’s supporters. But for voters who think Congress isn’t doing anything at all, Pelosi seemed pretty confident that her party can now convince them otherwise. ... Source: blogs.cqpolitics.com --- 30 days ago
It was one of those spit-out-your-coffee moments on the campaign trail today. At a visit to a nuclear power plant in Newport, Mich. this afternoon, John McCain, who hasn’t made a Senate vote in more than four months, said Congress should cancel its August break and come back to solve the nation’s energy crisis: “Now, nuclear power alone is not enough. Drilling alone is not enough. We need to do all this and more. That is why I am calling for an “all of the above” approach. I am also calling on Congress to come back into session to deal with this pressing energy challenge. I am prepared to take time off the campaign trail and I hope Senator Obama is too.” Really? Because if he did, it would be the first time McCain has worked at his day job since April 8, the last time he voted in the Senate. (It was a procedural vote to limit debate on a housing Bill.) Even Obama, who isn’t around much these days either, came back on July 9 to vote for a rewrite of the electronic Surveillance laws and a measure cancelling some payment cuts to Medicare doctors. McCain’s people must think they have a winning issue, because it’s the second time in two days that McCain has challenged Congress to come back and work on energy. He said it yesterday too , at a campaign appearance in Lafayette, Pa. He’s clearly picking up the talking point from House Republicans, who have been staging daily protests since Friday because Congress went on recess without allowing ... A blog posting on the Electronic Frontier Foundation site explains What The New NSA Spying Decision Means for the Immunity Debate. It was posted by Kevin Bankston, who says: With the Senate poised to vote on the FISA Amendments Act and immunity this Tuesday, this decision is particularly timely, as it demolishes key arguments made by proponents of telecom immunity: It goes on to list seven myths about the Surveillance Bill compromise, and gives the facts, based on the court decision. This is a must read for understanding the confusing debate around the FISA Bill. ...
