FRANKFORT — Daniel J. Venters formally took his seat on the Kentucky Supreme Court Monday, nearly a month after being selected to replace the state's retired chief Justice. Venters, a 58-year-old attorney, succeeds Joseph Lambert on the seven-Justice panel that represents the state's 3rd Supreme Court District. "This is, judicially speaking in Kentucky, where the buck stops," Venters said from the bench in his first formal remarks to the public. "And I feel awed by that responsibility, but at the same time I'm comforted here by the fact that there are six other honorable and brilliant people with whom I share that responsibility." Venters was sworn in during a public ceremony that attracted state constitutional officers, U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers and Gov. Steve Beshear. It was just for show, however, because Venters took his oath of office last month. ...

WASHINGTON . The Justice system in West Virginia is broken and the U.S. Supreme Court should take steps to fix it, according briefs in three cases awaiting the Court's attention. The chief Justice of the West Virginia Supreme Court lost an election in May, after pictures of him vacationing in Monte Carlo surfaced in the newspapers. He was with a powerful coal-company executive who had business before the Court. A second Justice has called the executive, Don L. Blankenship, stupid, evil and a clown who was "trying to buy influence like buying candy for children." That Justice, Larry V. Starcher, has disqualified himself only selectively from cases involving Blankenship's company, Massey Energy. A third Justice, Brent D. Benjamin, won his seat with the help of more than $3 million from Blankenship but has refused to disqualify himself from cases involving Massey, and twice joined a 3-to-2 majority throwing out a $50 million verdict against the company. ...

The Minnesota Independent, a sister site to the Michigan Messenger, has an article about Tim Tinglestad, who is running for the Minnesota Supreme Court. Tingelstad's website really has to be seen to be believed. This guy is a serious culture warrior for the religious right, spouting all kinds of nonsense on church and state and on the nature of Justice itself. He pledges, for example, to bring the "truth and light" of "God's word" to the courts: God's Word is the Light of Truth. As God's Word has been removed from our public lives, the resulting darkness has led to our present social disorder and political divisions. The correction of these problems will only begin when the Light of Truth is returned to our land's highest hills, the Supreme Courts. Until our highest courts return to an acknowledgment of the existence of God and His Truth, the people will continue to walk in the confusion of darkness.
