Lately, movie heroes are ambiguous — they exist on the border between good and evil, weakness and strength, violence and peace. They still shoot and swagger, but the new films also ask if they can love, if they are happy and how much good they can realistically do in a flawed world. Recent blockbusters such as “Batman: The Dark Knight,” “Batman Begins,” “James Bond: Casino Royale,” and “Beowulf” show the vulnerabilities of manly heroes who are usually beloved more for their hand-to-hand combat skills than for their emotional or moral triumphs. In these new films, however, the heroes must navigate personal struggles and temptations and resist despair in order to keep fighting for good. The brand new “Batman: The Dark Knight” and “Batman Begins” (2005), which explored Batman’s childhood pain, deal with the fine line between revenge and justice, and leave the viewer with the sense that Batman must work very hard to resist being drawn into the world of evil he is fighting. His righteous anger, it seems, could quickly turn to violent malice, making him little different from the villains he fights. Similarly, the last James Bond movie, “Casino Royale” (2006), explores Bond’s beginnings, complete with personal struggles unseen in earlier Bond movies. His strength is repeatedly undercut throughout the film — both physically and emotionally. He gets tortured in a particularly emasculating way and makes some serious mistakes, which thr ... While much of the Spout team is across the country covering Comic-Con (and what a great job they’re doing), I’m staying home and relaxing. Sure, it looks like a lot of fun out in San Diego, but I bet it can get really stressful, too. I hear yesterday there was a little problem with Hall H collapsing early in the morning. I can do without that kind of excitement. Maybe this weekend I’ll just lounge around the house in a Batman costume while my brother (who alerted me to the amusing ‘toon above) comes over and hangs out in a Spider-Man costume. Or, should I have said Baman and Piderman? Watch the clip and be inspired to have your own lazy Comic-Con in the privacy of your own home. And if you don’t think it’s the quite same, since you don’t get to attend the panels and what not, just keep checking back to SpoutBlog for all your liveblogged updates. It’ll be just like the real thing. I pwomise. read more ... Source: www.cooljunkie.com --- 8 hours ago
