Mario Cuomo, for one, can envision a scenario in which Barack Obama leads Hillary Clinton in pledged delegates, states won and total votes—and emerges from the convention as a nominee for vice president. The superdelegates, he said, could realistically make up for "any number” of elected delegates supporting Obama. “That's what the superdelegates were designed for,” Cuomo, who is officially neutral, said in a phone interview. “If 100 percent of the delegates had voted the other way, and they thought it was the wrong candidate, they wouldn't have to follow it."  read more » ...

by Chris Matthews I think our colleague Ron Allen said it best: “Every time I look at my Blackberry, it seems another Superdelegate has gone over to Barack Obama.” It’s been exactly five months to the day since voters in Iowa went to  the polls on January 3 and opened the primary and caucus season. Tonight, South Dakota and Montana close the curtain on the voting. No more caucuses, no more primaries. There are two big questions for tonight.  The first is, will Obama win...( read more ) ...

From NBC's Domenico MontanaroObama picked up another Superdelegate, continuing the slow drip in his direction. (He has picked up 12 since March 4th to Clinton's one.) The latest is former Sen. John Melcher, of Montana. "Melcher says he chose Obama because he believes the Illinois senator has been against the Iraq war since the start," the AP reports. Melcher served in the U.S. Senate from 1977 to 1989 and is a Superdelegate to the national convention based on his role with the National Democratic...( read more ) ...

Ask random passersby on an street corner to name the democrats' nominee for president. Among those who follow politics at all, 99.9 percent will answer, "Obama." If Heidi Li Feldman, a blogger and a professor of law (and philosophy) at Georgetown University Law Center, and Marc Rubin, a blogger , veteran ad man, and movie and TV writer -- head writer for "The White Shadow" -- happened by, they would say there is no nominee yet, that the two ended the primary/caucus season in "a virtual tie," in Feldman's words, neither of them having the requisite number of pledged delegates to claim the prize. 2118 are needed; Obama got there only with the help of superdelegates who are free, Feldman says, to change their minds until they actually cast a vote at the convention in Denver late next month. That's when, if Feldman and Rubin, who co-founded and are the only official members of The Denver Group , have anything to say about it -- and of course they don't -- the superdelegates, in accordance with DNC rules and bylaws, should be called on to reconsider who is the stronger candidate against John McCain. Both candidates, Feldman says, must be placed in nomination "and superdelegates left to vote as they see fit because ....[they] are specifically charged" with the duty of making certain that the party's candidate is electable. She refers to the McGovern Commission that set up the Superdelegate system to provide a "safety hatch" after the " ...

July 19th is a momentous day in the brief history of TPM-aholics . This group was formed a few months ago to bring together those of us who have come to know one another, after a fashion, at the Cafe, and to utilize theses relationships to help Barack Obama win the White House and Democrats to win across the country. So far, we've hosted results watching parties, purchased virtual beers for one another, and chatted online . But tomorrow is our first organized fundraiser. Members of the cafe will host parties in New York , San Francisco , Seattle, Austin , Tucson, and Taipei. If you live in one of these places and would like to attend a fundraiser, click the associated link or contact me at xengis@google.com, and I'll put you in touch with the host. If you don't live in one of these places, you can still participate. At 9:15pm EST / 6:15pm PST / 9:15am in Taiwan, we will have a conference call with Don Bivens, Superdelegate and Chairman of the Arizona Democratic Party, who will speak with us about building Democratic inroads and purple states and offer his perspective on a certain well-known senator from Arizona. If you wish to participate on the call, please sign up for the event , and we'll send you details for calling in. I also encourage any of you who can't make the events to contribute to our fundraiser by offering a campaign contribution at our fundraiser page . I would like to officially extend the party invitation to all TPM s ...
