Filed under: Home Entertainment Shortly after picking up its very own adult channel , VUDU is announcing a more, shall we say, family friendly bit today. Effective immediately, VUDU users will be able to renew any SD rental for $0.99 within seven days of first viewing the film, while renewals of HD Rentals will cost $1.99. Additionally, VUDU has launched a new "99 for 99" movie channel which contains a rotating list of 99 films that can be rented for -- you guessed it -- just south of a Washington. Interestingly, VUDU calls the deals "Summer blockbuster specials," though there's no sign of an end date for either. Can't say this totally changes the way we see the movie set-top-box, but it's certainly a step in the right direction. Full release after the jump. While the set-top box scene is getting pretty crowded for movie buffs, Vudu is hoping to yet again grab your attention and beat its competitors with a new deal. After going the porn route, Vudu is taking advantage of the dog days of Summer to lure you back into the house and onto your sofa. A Summer Blockbuster special is currently going on at Vudu, with Rentals and extended Rentals for just 99 cents. If you’re a Vudu user, you know that most Rentals, depending on how recently they’ve been released on DVD, can cost up to $5.00 for HD quality, or more. Extended Rentals can tack on another few dollars, of course making you wish you’d just bought the movie in the first place. While that’s the idea, there’s still those that would rather rent the movie for a cheaper price (why buy a movie you won’t know you’ll like?), even if that means that a few days later your friends come over and you go ahead and spring for the extended rental because you end up liking the movie and want your friends to enjoy it as much as you did. Along with this seasonal promotion, Vudu is also launching a movie channel called “99 for 99″ which promotes 99 blockbuster films chosen by Vudu’s editorial staff, all for 99 cents. This will even include new films, on a rotational basis. Will this deter you from falling into the Apple trap? As a Vudu user, I’ve found Vudu’s new movie availability to be better than Apple’s, even though it was slightly pricier than the a ...

Hello All- I am in the middle of trying to sort out a few Italian Hertz Rentals from this Summer and would love to know if others have had similar (or dissimilar) experiences. My only comparison is a single day Italian Avis rental that cost me less than $5-what a deal! Long story short, I had 12 "free day" Hertz coupons and used them in two separate Rentals. Made reservations with appropriate codes both times and presented coupons both times. The first five day rental had coupons applied but after being gouged for taxes I was charged 81 Euro, about US$130. The second rental somehow didn't get the coupon entered and I was charged 788 euro for the seven day rental...nearly US$1300! Obviously the second had some error, so I disputed the charge and emailed Hertz. After two weeks, I got the following email: We sincerely apologize for the billing error you are having. Our office in Italy is crediting your Visa account for a total of 351.70 euro. The adjustment is being made at this time, but may not appear on your next monthly statement due to billing cut-off dates. "As our August 23 E-mail indicated, we requested an investigation and have now received a response. Thank you for your patience while we reviewed your concerns. Please note it was determined that both Rentals were computed incorrectly. On rental record xxxx their records indicated that 5 free day certificates (valued at 239.66 euro) were not applied at the location and there was ...

Today New York's first Summer Streets blocked seven miles of city road to motorized vehicles from 7 am to 1 pm. Enough people took advantage to make Summer Streets successful, but not enough to make it as hellishly congested as a big concert or protest march, which had been our big worry. By our informal estimate, about half the participants walked and the rest biked, which must have pleased our Mayor, whose promotion of bike Rentals and bike paths (and, of course, this event, which Bloomberg touted Thursday in a joint press conference with Jay-Z ) are among his nicest gestures toward citizens who are not landlords. We biked the route, which dog-legged out of Central Park at East 72nd down Park Avenue, continued down Lafayette in the Village, and discharged at the Brooklyn Bridge. The upper stretch of Park Avenue was by far the most pleasant. We've stared up at those big old neo-Georgians and office buildings a million times, but not from the middle of the street, lest we be run over. The closer you get to the Park, of course, the better they take care of the roads, which made the ride smooth going. The most popular part of the northern leg was the passway around Grand Central, which is seldom walked by anyone not wearing a uniform. Clusters of pedestrians, sensing the rarity of the occasion ("Not seen by ordinary mortals!" cried one cyclist), lingered as if at a museum, and took pictures. There was a series of roadside attraction ...

The pixie dust in Warner Brothers' formula for a successful movie this Summer? Women. In sets of four, preferably. On Wednesday, the studio released The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 , the sequel to the hit movie based on a book featuring four teenage girls who share a pair of jeans that, magically, fits them all. The new movie made an estimated $5.7 million in its first day in theaters—midweek,  no less—according to Exhibitor Relations, a Los Angeles-based entertainment-research firm.   That single night's haul is more than half what The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants made in its entire opening weekend back in 2005. The movie went on to gross about $39 million domestically, handily making back its $25 million budget, and grossed another $40 million or so in DVD sales and Rentals on top of that. This Summer, the pump for feel-good chick flicks has been primed, and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 could do considerably better than its predecessor. For one thing, the sequel features the original movie's same four stars, all of whom have since entered the halls of mega-teenage-fandom. Blake Lively stars in the CW's Gossip Girl , and America Ferrera in ABC's Ugly Betty . Alexis Bledel ended her run in the CW's Gilmore Girls last year, and Amber Tamblyn, already a familiar face from CBS's show Joan of Arcadia , will star in a new ABC show, according to industry reports. But more important,  a certain wildly popular movi ...

Web-based video rental service Vudu on Wednesday unveiled a Summer movie offering that includes video renewals and Rentals for 99 cents. Vudu, which streams movies to your TV via set-top Vudu boxes, will now allow customers to renew their video Rentals for 99 cents within seven days of its first viewing; HD renewals will run $1.99. The company will also rotate a list of 99 movies from its library of more than 6,000 films that will be available for 99 cents. "In this age of $4-a-gallon gas and staycations, we felt that Vudu customers deserved a break and should be able to watch a great film for just 99 cents," Patrick Cosson, vice president of marketing for Vudu, said in a statement. Current 99 for 99 cents options include Sweeney Todd, Cloverfield, Groundhog Day, The King of Kong, and Logan's Run. Vudu Rentals are typically $3.99 per movie; users can also purchase the films for $19.99. Standard 250 GB Vudu boxes are available for $299, and the higher-end XL model for home theaters retail for $999. In June, Vudu released a wireless kit that sells for $79. It is comprised of two adapters, the first of which plugs directly to your home network via Ethernet and requires external power, while the second adapter plugs into the USB (for power) and Ethernet ports on the Vudu system. Once the Vudu box is powered, it automatically configures itself with the wireless kit. ...

Maybe it's the Olympics. Maybe it's the Summer slowdown. Maybe it's repositioning ahead of back-to-school time. Whatever is bringing it one, we appear to be in the midst of rebranding season for media and telecos. Look at the recent announcements: Bell last week unveiled a new logo and look. Rogers said on Monday that it is changing the name of its Rogers Video stories to Rogers Plus . The changes will be made on a city-by-city basis between now and the end of the year. Rogers said the stores need a new name because they now market more than just video Rentals, but also services like Rogers Wireless. A-Channel TV stations, meanwhile, are dropping the word "channel" and will simply be known as A. Drew Hasselback  ...

I found bicycling paradise this Summer in, of all places, Los Angeles County. I was on a cruise to Mexico when we stopped for a day at Catalina Island, about 22 miles off the coast of Los Angeles. With several hours to explore with my son, we decided to rent a bike with an attachment for kids. We explored every inch of road on the island that the bike shop allowed. I heard about some pretty good hills outside of Avalon, but the folks at Brown’s Bikes wouldn’t let us take any tandem Rentals up there. As Alexander and I pedaled around the island, stopping at the famous casino, the beach and the Wrigley Botanical Gardens I noticed several interesting things about our experience. 1. Alex wasn’t pulling his weight on the hills. He said it was easier for me to all the pedaling. I disagree. 2. The weather and ocean views were awesome. 3. There were no cars. No cars. That’s a cyclist’s dream. The guy at the bike shop explained that you have to apply for the right to own a car on the island and that there is quite a waiting list. He said he’d been waiting 10 years. Most of the residents get about on bikes or golf carts. Golf carts are much less imposing than cars. In fact at one point, Alex and I passed a moving golf cart on the left as we zipped down a hill back toward Avalon. The gold cart was going the speed limit. We weren’t. I was thinking I wished we had something like this back home. Then I realized we do – Point Defiance on Saturday ...
