Original Drawing Materials: Pen/Ink/Markers Dimensions: 8.5" x 11" [unframed] Date: 2008 These Flowers make the streets come to life. And they also encourage the people to keep moving. Life is beautiful if you just stop and enjoy each moment. What are scribbles--sketches? They're one-of-a-kind drawings created on found paper. I find others' scribbles and transformed them into original drawings. Now, I consider this work a process of "automatic drawing," and some of these works have been become original illustrations. Anything can be custom matted and framed. Let me know if you're interested. Summer has always been my favorite season. I love sunshine filtered through fully-leaved shade trees. I love early Flowers, walking around in sandals, and reading outdoors. Garden roses and spectacular weather, both generally in place by my late June birthday, make me happy. Spring's my second favorite—growth and potential resonate naturally in the heart of an optimist like me. Here in Iowa, most people relish autumn but dread the winter that follows. Until recently for me, falling leaves (despite their beautiful colors) depressed me. "Why is everyone nuts about fall?" I used to wonder. Everything is dying! By Thanksgiving, it's a sad, brown world in Madison County! After Master Gardener training last year via Iowa State University, though, I finally understand dormancy. Those dropping leaves are only this year's crop for our maple out front—the tree is alive and well within. Our perinneals are not dead (well, a few might be), just resting.  Strangely, my new love of fall lapped right over into winter. Last year's was a tough one, but I enjoyed each snowy day. Unless the temperature was below 20º, I went for my daily walks, watching for patches of ice, snowflakes falling on my shoulders. If you want to cause a stir in any location where the lows dip annually into the teens, the single digits, and the below-zeroes, just say "I love winter!" in conversation, and the person to whom you are speaking will check your forehead for an elevated ...

If you’ve driven along Main Street this Summer, you may have seen Barbara Walker watering Flowers on Main Street. If you’ve been there for the Fourth of July Parade, you may have seen her playing the bagpipes. If you’re a member of the First Presbyterian Church, you may have seen her dropping off the church bulletins she’s formatted and printed. She’s also been secretary-treasurer for the local chamber of commerce. Volunteer activities such as these have earned Walker the national Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Community Service Award, with which she will be formally honored Oct. 16 at Moonwinks Restaurant in Cuba. “My first reaction was, ‘What on earth for?’” Walker said, recalling the day Meredith Chilson of the Catherine Schuyler Chapter of the DAR for Allegany County told her about the award. “Andover is a very active community and there are many deserving people in Andover. I was just overwhelmed.” Chilson said Walker has organized fund raising events, dinners and reunions as well. One such event was the memorial dinner for Marco Conde, former Andover Central School librarian, who passed away in October 2007 at age 101. “In order to get the award you have to be recommended by your peers or community members. You can’t win the award for doing something you’re paid to do,” Chilson said. “They need at least three letters, plus recommendation from the local DAR chapter.” In Chilson’s recommendation letter, she wrote, “Bar ...
