You hail from Welwyn Garden City. Apparently Edwyn Collins penned a song as a tribute to the town as a B-side to his single The Magic Piper of Love. Would you consider a similar tribute? Billy: Did he really do that? That's awesome! I'm afraid I'm just not inspired enough yet to write an ode to The WGC! But maybe in my later years, as a reminiscing old fool! You're due to play the Stylus venue at Leeds University on October 5th as part of your nationwide tour, and have recently completed an American tour and various festival dates. On these appearances are there any new crowd favourites from the new record that you've noticed, and what new songs do you enjoy playing the most? "Girls & Boys" has been going down a treat at our shows. It's circle pits galore when we jam that one out. "Alright" obviously goes down pretty well, but "Shake! Shake!", which we're considering as our next single, is always the one that tends to knock people's heads off. One of the greatest challenges facing Mexico City is figuring out how to squeeze 6 million cars and trucks through a decidedly 20th street grid. For example, the city’s loop, instead of being a freeway, has about a half dozen traffic lights, which contributes to the city’s horrific traffic jams ( one study found that the average daytime speed on some roads is 12 mph). The city is struggling and straining to manage an overwhelming traffic situation that will likely only get worse as more residents buy cars. The solution, posed most recently by recently by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, is to encourage more use of transportation: get people out of their cars and onto the subway and bus system. Unlike some cities, Mexico City has an efficient and helpful mass transit system. You can get pretty much anywhere in the city on bus or subway. The problem is, there is a huge percentage of residents that simply refuse to take the train or bus. Many upper class residents find the Metro too dangerous, too dirty and too chaotic to even think about entering. And it’s not uncommon to find even middle class residents who haven’t taken the subway in decades and would rather be caught dead than get on a pesero, as Mexico City’s wild and wooly little green buses are called. Reader Raphael sent us this photograph of a subway rider getting pretty comfy on the subway. Now, it's nice to stretch your toes and all, but... shudder . One of the MTA's state violations is placing "one's foot on the seat of a subway, bus, or platform bench" (it could mean a $50 fine ). Besides you have no idea what's been on that seat before--it could be something like this . Which is why many people like to avoid skin- on- subway- surface contact--we saw someone holding onto a subway pole with a plastic bag yesterday. The seatless Subways pilot will begin in the coming months. Also: Dirty seats are one of the "ten plagues" of subway riders. ...
Filed under: North America , United States , Transportation That's according to the latest NYC Transit data, at least, which covers the past three years of service. The New York Post points out that while the days of broken-down cars and graffiti-filled stations, at least, is long gone, there is a significant trend downwards in the quality and reliability in subway services. Through June this year, the average number of delayed trains is up 24% from last year, and a whopping 71% from two years ago. Meanwhile, the average distance that rail cars travel between break-downs is down 7% from last year and 17% from two years ago. NYC Transit blames the issues on more track work, rising ridership and decreasing income from federal and state sources. Unfortunately, none of those problems really seem to be going away - and NYC Transit is not the only organization battling the dangerous forces of system troubles. As gas prices increase, ridership on mass transit systems around the world is going up. Also, subway systems are not getting any younger. Many of the world's oldest transit networks have already passed the 100-year mark - some by a lot (London's Underground, the oldest subway system in the world , started service in 1863). Without adequate funding and support from the traveling public, mass transit systems will just keep getting less and less reliable.
