Over the last two years, three Pittsburg High School Student-Athletes have taken part in a very rare experience. Jordan Bicknell, Kirk Smith and Lonnie Vail all traveled to Australia to compete in either football or track and field. Bicknell, who competed in the high jump in the summer of 2007, said that even today, it is something that he has still not forgotten about. “It was an amazing experience,” Bicknell said. “It was awesome. “I competed and they had us going all over the place visiting a lot of the tourist places,” Bicknell said. “I went to the Great Barrier Reef and that was awesome.” Smith and Vail returned to Pittsburg on July 13 after spending 11 days in Australia to play football. “Everything was awesome,” Vail said. “I actually thought that it was better than what I expected.” Even with a structured schedule and practice, Smith said that there was still time to check out the sights. “I didn’t think that we would have a lot of free time,” Smith said. “But we actually had a lot of time to do what we wanted. “We got to see things that we were actually interested in,” Smith said. “They took us to zoos and other structured activities but, other than that, you got to walk around the city.” Vail and Smith stayed at Surfer’s Paradise, Australia. Despite the name, neither of the two took part in the city’s namesake. “It was pretty expensive,” Smith said. “That and it was cold. Not cold like here but it was a little chilly.” The on ...
