Viewers seeking easy access to prerecorded Movies and TV shows will soon have a new option: LG says its next high-def DVD player, the BD300 Network Blu-ray Player, can Stream content from the Netflix website directly to their TVs. The BD300, which will be available this fall, requires a broadband connection to access the Netflix website. Using the player's remote control, users can browse Movies and TV shows, and access ratings and a synopsis of a program. Desired selections are then added to a personalized queue, which is displayed on the TV screen. According to LG, once a movie is selected from the queue, it will start playing within 30 seconds, and viewers will be able to fast-forward and rewind the program as they do on a DVR. There are several questions that hopefully will be answered at a press conference this evening. For example, the companies didn't say if the programs would be available as high-def video streams, and if so, what the resolution would be. Based on other deals, we presume it will be sent as standard-definition video. And so far, there's no word on the expected price for the player. And while the companies said there would be "no additional charge" for content streamed from Netflix, they didn't say what level of membership, if any, would be required to access the Netflix library. Earlier today, we published the article Comcast's Video Download Store Is Wholly Unremarkable about Comcast's expansion of Fancast, a place to download Movies a la Amazon Unbox. Then a reliable tipster filled us in on where Fancast is going—specifically, in the mobile market. And we have to say, it's caught our attention. Fancast is essentially Comcast's way to expand into other areas of the entertainment sector without building on their cable monopoly. So their coming mobile app (working on Sprint phones for certain) includes partnerships with various media companies that may surprise you as part of a large media portal conglomerate. Sure, Fancast supports basic Comcast services. You can watch an unspecified amount of live programming on your phone streamed at what we've been told is near perfect quality (on a small screen). You can schedule recordings to your DVR and, maybe in later releases of the software, even Stream these recordings to your phone a la Sling Box. You can rate Movies and buy tickets on Fandango. And if other deals work out, you'll also be able to schedule recordings to your TiVo and add Movies to your Netflix queue. Apparently the software is more than ready to go. Reflecting the market's inexorable move to high-definition content, a number of manufacturers introduced Blu-ray players at CEDIA. Several are so-called Profile 2.0 models with a feature called BD-Live, which enables you to download Internet content such as movie trailers. If you want Internet connectivity, look specifically for a player that has BD-Live (or can be upgraded to include it), as earlier designs lack this capability. Here's a rundown of what we've seen at the show so far: LG launches Netflix-enabled player LG Electronics surprised audiences when it revealed the price for the previously announced BD300 player: $400, which is $100 less than expected. The BD300 (click on image above for a closer look) is a BD-Live model with the unique ability to Stream Movies and TV episodes from a Netflix online library of about 12,000 titles (a Netflix subscription is required). The player offers internal decoding of the new Dolby TrueHD high-resolution audio format, and will presumably pass DTS-HD Master audio as bitstream (the specs are a bit unclear). The BD300, which has a USB port for playing back digital music, photos, and videos stored on a flash drive, will be available next month. ... Filed under: HDTV , Home Entertainment When we waltzed over to have a gander at LG's recently priced BD300 , one of the reps on hand wasn't so keen on letting us take close-ups. Not one to just roll over and accept a command, we casually walked over to the other BD300 kiosk, flashed the Engadget gang sign to the much kinder rep, and continued on to snap a few shots of the new box. The unit set up was fully functional and able to Stream Netflix Movies, and it even detected the network connection before playing in order to deliver the best quality without introducing skips and stutters.
