Out of the blue come the two most entertaining new series so far this Season. Produced by a firm started five years ago by a pair of Hollywood agents, airing on space that is basically leased from one of the most obscure TV networks, Valentine and Easy Money put a modern twist on family drama that's edgy and fun without being overwrought or vulgar. They premiere tomorrow at 8 and 9 p.m., respectively, on CW57. ...

Seems every hurricane Season now records of some sort are broken. Such is already the case this year, as pointed out by Jeff Masters in his blog at The Weather Underground. With Ike’s strike on Texas on Saturday, the U.S. coastline has been hit by six consecutive named storms. The other storms include: -- Hurricane Dolly , which struck South Texas on July 23; -- Tropical Storm Edouard , which struck the upper Texas coast on Aug. 5; -- Tropical Storm Fay , which hit Florida four times (a record unto itself), starting with Key on Aug. 18; it then zig-zagged to Naples, Flagler Beach and the Panhandle; -- Hurricane Gustav , which struck Louisiana not far from New Orleans on Sept. 1; -- Hurricane Hanna , which struck Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Sept. 6. It was almost seven consecutive hits, as Tropical Storm Cristobal brushed the Outer Banks of North Carolina on July 21. The previous record was set in 2004, when five named storms made consecutive hits on the U.S. coast, including: Hurricane Frances (Florida), Hurricane Gaston (South Carolina), Tropical Storm Hermine (Massachusetts), Hurricane Ivan (Alabama-Florida) and Hurricane Jeanne (Florida). Another record already set this year, albeit a fairly minor one: In forming on July 3 near the Cape Verde Islands, Bertha became the earliest tropical Storm to form so far to the east. And we still have two and half months left to go. ...

The U-12 North Shore Storm Jr. Olympic softball team played in their final tournament of the year over Labor Day weekend in Salem. The Storm, made up of 12- and 13-year-olds, faced an even bigger challenge playing against their U-14 counterparts that also featured 15-year-old youngsters. The Storm had some help from their older sisters, who sent two of their players over to them to balance off the rosters. They played four games Friday and Saturday in pool play to determine their seed in the championship round Sunday. But they could not get past the dreaded bad inning at the start of the tournament. All four games had one inning that kept the Storm from pulling out a win, going 0-2-2 in pool play. “The girls were a bit nervous playing against kids two or three years older than them, and in many cases double their physical size,” said manager Bill Pszenny. During pool play, the Storm did face the challenge, competing very well versus the Beverly Panthers (7-6), Main Bandits (6-0), Danger Elite (7-6) and N.H. Lightning (3-3). The Storm pitchers kept their teammates close in each game. Becky Hoffman (Lexington), Courtney Erickson (Everett), Samantha Gabriella (Malden) and Kendall Meehan (Danvers) turned in gutsy performances, and they had help from their stellar defense. By the end of pool play, the buzz around the park was “watch out for that little Storm team.” The Storm did have another challenge, when they lost stellar shortstop ...
