I found out last week that Stevie has finally had her own Soundstage concert. It was filmed this past October and first shown in July on Chicago's PBS station. Madonna needs a brand new bag. And according to WWD, she's going with a boho gypsy look designed exclusively for her by Givenchy for her upcoming tour, which hits stateside in October. She's not taking any chances on a backup singer screwing up her style palette either. The article reads: "Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci designed two outfits, while Tom Ford provided bespoke suits for the band. Three pairs of shoes have been custom-made by Miu Miu, there are thigh-high boots courtesy of Stella McCartney, sunglasses from Moschino, and other outfits and odds and ends from Yves Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli and Jeremy Scott." In other words, everyone will be head-to-toe in designer something. Madonna's longtime, talented stylist Arianne Phillips is at the helm and she's the one who conceived that cowboy look for Madonna and the much ballyhooed purple leotard. I won't bemoan the state of style in the music world -- with designers outfitting tours and stages resembling catwalks -- but I will say that spontaneity is dead. R.I.P. Still, who doesn't love that ever-forgiving, loose-fitting peasant chic? It sure beats the leotard, which is only appropriate for tumbling. Stevie Nicks deserves cred for pioneering the high black boots and diaphonous, Wiccan look. But even Alicia Keys and Jennifer Lopez have tried their hand at playing one of the nomadic tribe. Like a Swedish-pop Stevie Nicks, Lykke Li has made billowing clothes, long blonde hair, chunky jewelery, headbands , and a vague mystical sense all key aspects of her artistic persona. The video for "Breaking It Up", one of the catchiest songs from debut LP Youth Novels , also incorporates the "express yourself don't repress yourself" sexuality of a Madonna or Fiona Apple clip. On Kleerup's excellent " Until We Bleed ", Li is the vulnerable, emotionally fucked-up one, but "Breaking It Up", like previous video choice " I'm Good, I'm Gone ", puts her in the driver's seat. She still sounds kind of emotionally fucked up, though. "I let you think that I'm yours when I'm not," Li sings, leading a lover on when he's close even though she knows it's not going to last; "If we're just waiting a second too long/ Darling I'll leave and you won't come along." The video shows Li, with her Nicksian garb and heavy eye makeup, dancing in a bare, warehouse-like room around scantily clad men and women who are, you know, like, tied to the bed and stuff. A band with a long and convoluted history, Fleetwood Mac was originally conceived as a heavy blues outfit in the tradition of John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. I recorded Stevie Nicks on PBS's Soundstage. Transferred to my computer with TiVo Desktop 2.6.2. I used DirectShowDump to make it a standard .mpg file. I used Nero to burn a UDF data DVD. From the earliest days of heavy metal, the Valley of the Sun has housed and spawned some of the most influential acts in the genre: Flotsam and Jetsam, Sacred Reich, Megadeth, Soulfly, Linkin Park -- hell, our state even has ties to Slayer and Metallica. We’re not sure if it’s the purgatory-worthy heat, the mystic mountains, or the minions of metalheads here, but one thing’s for certain: more famous metal musicians live or have lived in Arizona than the average Joe realizes. The 14 most noteworthy Arizona metal men are listed below, in no particular order. 1. Rob Halford (Judas Priest) : Quite possibly the most revered singer in the history of metal (behind perhaps only Ozzy Osbourne), Rob Halford has called Phoenix home since 1985. His home sits on a mountaintop in Paradise Valley, and when the monsoon season hits, he loves to look out over the Valley during thunderstorms. Halford has said Phoenix is “in my soul” and “means everything to me.” (Read more about Rob Halford’s favorite Phoenix haunts in Up on the Sun on Wednesday, August 27). 2. Alice Cooper : The original shock rocker is probably the most famous of our musical residents (unless you count Stevie Nicks, a rare Arizona native who’s in a whole other genre). As consistent as he is, Chris Isaak could use a little change in his shtick. Photos by Candace Horgan. Chris Isaak is a smooth cat – the inoffensive guy who flirts with your girlfriend and makes you like it. But over the course of his career, Isaak’s music and shtick has taken on some of that likable, if bland, inoffensiveness. If you’ve seen Isaak once, you’ve seen him a million times. His music hardly changes, as shown at his Thursday show at the Botanic Gardens . Even the new stuff sounds a lot like the older material. He jokes with the band? Yes, and a lot of it’s practiced patter. He comes out and sings the encore in the mirror-ball pants? Yes, always. While it’s all the same, it’s hard to hold that against Isaak. The fans – mostly ladies – love it. And why not? They want to swoon each time he takes on “Wicked Game,” with its sentimental wistfulness. They want to scream at every turn of “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing,” with its growls of sugary blues. But fans crushing on Isaak is one thing. Taking him critically serious is another. He’s likable and charming and a solid songwriter, yes, but if he doesn’t change his act sooner than later, he’ll end up a novelty act. Isaak’s Botanic Gardens show was, in a sense, a repeat performance of his show last summer opening for Stevie Nicks at Red Rocks – and numerous shows before that. Ingeborg Seines is a cute pixie with a clear, ethereal voice - that hovers somewhere in between Bjork and Stevie Nicks. Performing at this year's Oya Festival, she's been nursed by the indie scene in Oslo, Norway and cites an eclectic list of inspiration from Jens Lekman, Billie Holiday and Burt Bacharach.
