There was quite a lot to transcribe out, and many questions asked. Some questions put to Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, include: Will we always need programmers? What’s Microsoft’s input in Facebook and social networking? Does Microsoft have any changes in mind for their lack of “coolness” image in comparison to Google and Apple? What keeps you [...] ...

Why hasn't Microsoft already made their office tools available as online versions? It could set them up in a good position against Google's online office efforts -- the shift to the so-called computing cloud, the buzzword of recent times. I once heard someone argue they don't move to the cloud because it would cannibalize their own desktop office suite. But times are changing, and now Google Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer said some interesting things, according to The Register: "We need a new operating system designed for the cloud and we will introduce one in about four weeks, we'll even have a name to give you by then. But let's just call it for the purposes ... ... Source: www.moreover.com --- 8 days ago

TechNewsWorld has an interview article with Steve Ballmer about Microsofts consumer electronics efforts and challenges. As usual, he is exceeding optimistic about Vista (he calls it an unqualified success) and has other interesting opinions. Q: What else would you say has been an unqualified success of late? A: Since [we updated it], I'd also refer to Vista as an unqualified success. It doesn't mean that people aren't still picking on it, but we've sold 180 million copies, something like that, of Vista. The quality, the compatibility [and], particularly from the consumer market, the level of acceptance -- I'd call it an unqualified success over the last six months or so. Comments ...

While this isn’t the Zune phone that many have speculated is in the works in Microsoft’s R&D labs, it’s the next best thing. The media-playing (and presumably sharing) capabilities of the Zune music player have been confirmed to be coming to the Windows Mobile platform. Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed that the Zune software that [...] ...

With Microsoft mandarin Kevin Johnson bolting to Jupiter, leaving Microsoft to lick its wounds over Yahoo and reorganize, CEO Steve Ballmer sent out an all-hands e-mail to Microsoft folk encapsulating the message he delivered to financial analysts gathering in Redmond Thursday. Ballmer highlighted software-plus-service, associating it with a 'platform in the cloud and delivering applications across PCs, phones, TVs, and other devices, at work and in the home' (Microsoft's Mesh widgetry) and promised 'more about our cloud platform initiatives and the next versions of our Live and Online technologies' at the company?s Professional Developers Conference (PDC) at the end of October. read more ... ... and helped create a little meme It’s been a strange old week here at CIO Towers. Regular readers of this site (and even some irregular ones) will know that this reporter considers himself merely a recorder of the shifting sands of the technology sector and its implications for business. Lacking the gonzo tendencies of a Hunter S. Thompson, Norman Mailer or Tom Wolfe I have been content to be an anonymous, invisible hack, perched on a stool somewhere filing my daily copy. However, on Wednesday and by a curious twist of fate, I found myself quite close close to a news event . ... Source: www.mobilewhack.com --- 8 days ago
I was just considering cutting old Stevie some slack since it looked like he was actually working for a change. If last year he went ahead and told everyone what he thinks about the iPhone and Apple’s success in selling it, now he talks about the first Android device. The G1 won’t be a threat to Microsoft either. Apparently no product will, no matter how much market share Windows Mobile might loose to Apple and Google in the future. Ballmer had a chance of saying something worth remembering at the PDC in the UK and he blew it. He said that Android is unattractive and it won’t threaten Microsoft position in the mobile business: “they’ve got one handset maker, we’ve got 55. They’re available through one operator, we’ve got 175.” Well there’s this little thing we like to call the Open Handset Alliance which is pretty damn interested in the Google thing. Unfortunately we don’t have footage of Ballmer talking about Google so we’d have to remember his style from an earlier intervention (video above). As chief executive of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer heads a company that's not just a PC software giant but also a growing presence in the broader consumer electronics industry. In less than 10 years, Microsoft has become a major player in video games, mobile phones, set-top boxes and Internet search and advertising. However, the company is nowhere near as dominant in consumer electronics as it is in operating systems. ... Source: msmvps.com --- 1 day ago

He was at a local Microsoft event , but I couldn’t attend because I was in Madrid in an MVP OpenDay (one could say that Steve paid for it, in part :)).
