Treatment with topical Steroids downregulates IL-5, eotaxin-1/CCL11, and eotaxin-3/CCL26 gene expression in eosinophilic esophagitis. Am J Gastroenterol. 2008 Sep;103(9):2184-93 Authors: Lucendo AJ, De Rezende L, Comas C, Caballero T, Bellón T OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to evaluate the changes induced by topical steroid treatment to the esophageal epithelial inflammatory eosinophilic and T-cell infiltrate and to IL-5, eotaxin-1/CCL11, and eotaxin-3/CCL26 esophageal gene expression levels in patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EE). METHODS: Esophageal biopsies were taken from eight adult patients at the moment of diagnosis and after 3-month treatment with fluticasone propionate. Eosinophils, CD8, and CD4 T cells were examined by immunohistochemistry. IL-5, eotaxin-1/CCL11, and eotaxin-3/CCL26 gene expression levels were measured by real-time PCR. Eight control samples were also analyzed. RESULTS: A significant decrease in the eosinophil infiltrate and in CD8(+) T-cell density was observed in the esophageal epithelium from the patients upon steroid treatment. IL-5 was not detected in control samples, and expression levels were variably downregulated after treatment in six of the patients. Gene expression of eotaxin-1/CCL11 showed relevant downregulation in four cases and a modest twofold decrease in three of the patients studied. Mean CCL11 expression values upon steroid treatment were similar to control samples (19.4 +/- 28.6 vs 8.42 ...

In a stunning turn of events that you could not possibly have seen coming, 40-40 man and all-around mensch Jose Canseco was recently detained at the U.S.-Mexico border for ... do we even need say it? Yes, Jose will appear in federal court next week to answer charges of illegal steroid possession. But not just any steroid; this one is for your balls . “In males, [Human chorionic gonadotropin] mimics L H and helps restore and maintain testosterone production in the testes. As such, hCG is commonly used during and after steroid cycles to maintain and restore testicular size as well as endogenous testosterone production." In other words, when you put the juice in you, it shrinks your nads. So you put this stuff in after it to re-embiggen them. Problem solved. Frankly, we think the government needs to end this crazy war on drugs that keep your nuts at their proper size. How many lives will it ruin before we learn our lesson? And oh, by the way ... Jose Canseco is sleazy drug cheat who will never ever change. Ever. • Canseco ‘Detained’ at Mexican Border For Steroids [SbB] ...

Thanks to the persistent popularity of the Prius among American drivers, who buy 65 to 70 percent of all Toyota hybrids sold worldwide, the company is considering developing a bigger, badder version of the gas-sipper. James E. Lentz III, the head of Toyota Motor Sales USA, says he has proposed creating a separate Prius brand akin to the auto giant's Scion spin-off. The new line, which would be sold in regular Toyota dealerships and available only in the U.S., could include various sizes -- including, said Lentz, "one on Steroids." Sa-weet! Company officials, who recently announced the long-term possibility of converting their entire high-end Lexus line to hybrid models, are said to be mulling over the idea. "We're catching the wind on this," Lentz said. Or is that the breeze from a thousand F150 owners laughing? sources:  The New York Times , Reuters ...

Filed under: PEDs Although Congress and the media have chosen to focus almost exclusively on the use of performance-enhancing drugs among athletes, there's also a great deal of PED use among Hollywood celebrities, from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone on down. But one of the celebrities who certainly has the body of a steroid user -- and who played a muscular football player in Any Given Sunday -- says he has never used them. LL Cool J was on Late Night With Conan O'Brien last night, and when Conan brought up Steroids, LL made clear that he doesn't want to risk the testicular atrophy that is a side effect of steroid use. "We don't want the prunes to turn into raisins," LL said. "I still want to matter at home, not just at the beach." I'm not sure that comparing his own testicles to prunes is really where LL wants to go, but point taken: Count LL as one muscular man who says no to Steroids.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Imagine we’ve time-traveled a few decades into the future and you are walking across a desolate, rock-strewn wasteland on Mars with a survey team. Suddenly an oversized dragonfly-looking creature swoops up from a crater rim. It flits overhead furiously flapping its wings against the cream-colored sky. It makes a broad loop around your group then quickly flutters toward the horizon. This seeming apparition would be a heart-stopper. That is, until you learned that oversized insect was actually a machine made and dispatched to Mars by another space faring nation engaged in a remote geologic survey of the red planet. The dragonfly-on-Steroids is called ExoFly , a nimble flapping aerobot being prototyped at the Technical University Delft, Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Lightweight autonomous machines like ExoFly may be among the next generation of planetary explorers. Biological evolution’s got a 500 million year jump us in terms of trial-and-error experiments with ingenious ways to travel across our planet. It’s OK to copy from Mother Nature. In the past few years engineers have gotten a better understanding of the complexities of insect flight and have been able to mechanically duplicate them. Having a small flexible machine capable of flying, hovering, landing and taking off like an insect would open up a new exploration niches that it not easily reachable by rovers or airborne vehicles on far flung worlds. These small flyin ...

Jose Canseco was held for nearly 10 hours by immigration authorities after agents said they stopped the former baseball star as he attempted to bring a fertility drug from Mexico, his lawyer said Friday. Canceco was detained at San Diego's San Ysidro border crossing Thursday after agents searched his vehicle and said they found human chorionic gonadotropin, which is illegal without a prescription, said his attorney, Gregory Emerson. Emerson declined to say if Canseco - who admitted to using Steroids in a 2005 book that also alleged steroid use by other baseball players - had the drug, which is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency for use in males. The drug helps restore production of testosterone lost in steroid users. The New York Daily News earlier reported the stop. A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Virginia Kice, said Canseco was ordered to appear in federal court in San Diego "related to an alleged smuggling violation" Thursday at a U.S. border crossing. She declined to elaborate. Canseco has not been charged with a crime, Kice said. If he were to be charged, it would happen at his court appearance. Emerson said Canseco was ordered to appear in court Tuesday. U.S. Customs and Border Protection released Canseco after he agreed to allow ICE agents to search his Los Angeles-area home, Emerson said. About 10 ICE agents searched the home in the attorney's presence Friday as Canseco was returning from S ...

The "Building A Cubs Champion" series will continue next week... on the weekend, I thought we could all use some diversion. I hate the Yankees. Well, who doesn't, you're saying. Except for those born and raised as Yankee fans (and a certain senator from New York who adopted them for political expedience, and that's not a political comment, it's a baseball fan's comment about someone born and raised a Cubs fan who switched just to pander for votes), pretty much every baseball fan hates the Yankees and their fans for their arrogant and corporate attitude, the blowhard owner they've had over the last 35 years, and the constant winning. Oh, wait. That last part? The winning? If it happened to us, I think we could deal with it. Anyway, if you hate the Yankees, "This Bad Day In Yankees History" is for you. Spiral-bound so you can use it as a perpetual calendar, it contains negative events for the haughty Bronx team for every day of the calendar year, even February 29; on Leap Year Day in 1924, we learn that: For the second straight year, Babe Ruth is felled by influenza during spring training, a serious matter only six years after an epidemic killed roughly 50 million people worldwide. It is his fourth influenza attack, but he'll recover and save his real health crisis for 1925. The entire book is filled with gems such as this one from July 29, 1991: The night begins with Yankee Stadium fans chanting at Jose Canseco about Steroids and ...

Filed under: Hybrids/Alternative , Green , Scion , Toyota This isn't the first time we've heard that Toyota might spin off the Prius as a separate brand much like Scion. But we now have the most concrete news about the automaker's plans we've seen yet. Micheline Maynard of The New York Times talked with James E. Lentz, president of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. recently who said he was actively lobbying Toyota for the Prius brand spinoff and that the company was working on future models to expand the lineup. Lentz said he was pushing for a Yaris-sized Prius and a "Prius on Steroids." He wouldn't comment on rumors of a Prius crossover, however. Lentz also said the new line would be sold alongside Toyota vehicles instead of separately like the company's Lexus brand. When might this new Prius brand be approved by Toyota? Lentz would only say that he has a meeting in Japan next month. Maynard writes that in all her years covering Toyota, "...I can say that executives rarely talk this much about an idea unless it is under active discussion, so the chances of a Prius brand are probably pretty good." The former Maine man has developed into one of the San Diego Chargers’ main men. “Stephen was a guy we were fortunate to see grow and blossom here,” University of Maine head coach Jack Cosgrove said in speaking of Stephen Cooper, the Chargers’ inside linebacker from Wareham. “He hadn’t reached his zenith his senior year here, so I’m not surprised he’s continued to grow.” From his modest days as an undrafted rookie free agent cutting his NFL teeth on special teams, the 6-foot-1, 235-pound Cooper has grown into a vital cog in the defense of the Chargers’ team that will host to the New England Patriots at Qualcomm Stadium tonight. Last year, his first as a full-time starter in the NFL, Cooper registered a team-leading 179 tackles for the Chargers during the regular season and another 39 in their three-game postseason that ended with a 21-12 loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game in Foxboro. This year, he’s just getting started. Following a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Policy on Steroids and Related Substances (upon his return, he confirmed a San Diego Union-Tribune report that he’d tested positive for ephedra), Cooper made his 2008 debut with an eight-tackle effort in a 17-10 loss at Miami last Sunday that dropped the Chargers to 2-3, already two games behind Denver in the AFC West. But even in the midst of all that and the loss of outside linebacker Shawne Merriman for the season, Chargers head coach Nor ...
